Jasmine Lau: Kapok House Sumi-e

Jasmine Lau: Kapok House Sumi-e Hi, I’m Jasmine, an Altrincham-based sumi-e artist and art psychotherapist. Join the bloom!

I teach traditional sumi-e (Japanese ink painting) workshops and create contemporary works exploring nature, stillness, and therapeutic mark-making. I'm a UK-based, botanically inspired artist who paints the small still moments where nature meets ink and colour.

Really excited to receive these photos from the International Sumi-e Association.

It’s so excited to see Rain-kissed Hydrangeas mounted as a traditional Japanese scroll painting and displayed with the Encouragement Award. I didn’t have a proper photo of the work before sending it to Japan, so seeing it like this feels especially meaningful.

A lovely afternoon spent with a private group celebrating a birthday through sumi-e. It was such a joy to share a calm, creative space, with brush, ink, and a little time to slow down together. Thank you for inviting me to be part of such a special celebration.

A lovely private Sumi-e workshop with Stockport Art Guild last night.

We explored ink tones, brushwork, and the calm focus of traditional Japanese ink painting. It was wonderful to see everyone experimenting with the brush and ink, and bringing their own character into each piece.

Thank you for inviting me.

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared any new work.

My latest painting is inspired by the white champaca flower, known for its delicate fragrance and fleeting bloom. I’m drawn to the way it seems to appear and disappear at the same time, suspended somewhere between presence and memory.

Another white champaca study. Painted not to capture the flower itself, but the moment it begins to dissolve. #白...

Things on the edge of vanishing.

Trying to develop a collection that explores the fragile space between presence and disappearance like states of memory, weather, grief, or breath.

The dissolving forms feel natural to the behaviour of ink. Blooms emerge from mist, briefly take shape, then disappear back into it.

Some flowers only appear fully alive when they are beginning to fade.

Ink on paper, painted slowly over several evenings. The softness of water, smoke, petals, and shadow all finding each other for a moment before disappearing again.

I’m very happy to share that my work Rain-kissed Hydrangeas has received an Encouragement Award at the 25th International Sumi-e Association Exhibition in Tokyo!

This means a lot to me, especially as my sumi-e practice has been growing so much over the past few months. I’m grateful for the recognition and encouraged to keep developing this quiet, emotional language of ink, memory, and nature.

I didn’t take a decent photo of the artwork before I sent it to Japan, but I can’t wait to see it framed as a traditional Japanese scroll painting.
