Cold Reading Audition Technique workshop done here in Hong Kong last Sunday. Alongside the core cold reading work, we had time to explore emotional preparation and making specific choices from the text. By the final reading the difference was clear. Not just technically, but in the room, genuine connection between the actors, responses coming from listening and noticing each other rather than from the page. Thanks to for making it happen.

Atelier de lecture à froid et technique d’audition ici à Hong Kong dimanche dernier.
En plus du travail central sur la lecture à froid, nous avons eu le temps d’explorer la préparation émotionnelle et les choix spécifiques à faire à partir d’un texte.
À la dernière lecture, la différence était claire. Pas seulement sur le plan technique, mais dans la salle, une connexion authentique entre les acteurs, des réactions nées de l’écoute et de l’observation mutuelle plutôt que de la page.

Où mettre votre attention est la question que nous avons explorée ce week-end dernier à Hong Kong lors d’un workshop From Page to Screen: Cold Reading Audition Technique.

Ralentir suffisamment et prendre votre temps pour véritablement remarquer votre partenaire de scène crée les conditions pour répondre dans l’instant, plutôt que de placer toute votre attention sur le texte. Lorsque votre attention se déplace à la fois du texte et de la gestion du résultat, pour revenir vers votre partenaire, votre comportement émerge
naturellement de l’échange.

C’est alors que le travail devient spécifique, ancré et exploitable, et tourne le texte en un véritable échange humain, auquel on peut s’identifier, vital pour votre réalisateur / metteur en scène.

Where to put your attention was the question we explored this last weekend in Hong Kong during a From Page to Screen: Cold Reading Audition Technique workshop. 

Slowing down enough to notice your scene partner creates the conditions to respond in the moment, rather than placing all your attention on the text. When attention moves away from both the text and managing the result, and back onto the other person, behaviour begins to arise naturally from the exchange.

That is when your work becomes specific, grounded, and usable, turning the text into a real human exchange, relatable and vital to your director.

Anticiper vous sort de l’instant présent et vous ramène à vos pensées.
La présence nait du fait de rester connecté à ce qui se passe, et non pas de vous préparer à ce qui vient ensuite
En cessant cette fuite en avant, vous permettez à l’échange de vous affecter.
C’est alors que le travail s’ancre avec charisme dans plus de réactivité et d’authenticité.

Anticipation pulls you out of the moment and into your own head.
Presence comes from staying with what is happening, not preparing what comes next.
When you stop racing ahead, you allow the exchange to affect you.
That is when the work becomes grounded, responsive, and real.
That is when, through deeper responsiveness and authenticity, the work grounds itself in presence and gains charisma.

Quand vous arrêtez d’essayer de contrôler le résultat, comment cela se manifeste-t’il au niveau de votre comportement?

Dans l’instant présent, l’incertitude maintient votre disponibilité et vous rend plus réactif, alors que chercher à maîtriser le résultat réduit souvent le travail avant même qu’il ne commence.
Accepter pleinement l’incertitude renforce le contact avec votre partenaire et permet un comportement qui naît non pas du contrôle mais de la situation elle-même.
C’est là que les choix prennent vie, rendant votre jeu versatile et donc dirigeable.

What behaviour emerges when you stop managing the outcome?

Uncertainty keeps you available and makes you more responsive in the moment, while managing the result often narrows the work before it begins.
Embracing uncertainty reinforces contact with your partner and allows your behaviour to arise not from control, but from the situation itself.
This is where choices come alive, allowing you to be versatile and therefore open to directions.
