Moving to Paris teaches you a lot, but some of the biggest lessons are the things you have to unlearn. 🇫🇷

A disagreement isn’t necessarily a conflict. Silence doesn’t mean a meeting is going badly. And paperwork almost always takes longer than expected.

These cultural differences may seem small, but understanding them can completely change how it feels to live and work in France.

Relocation isn’t only about securing the right visa, finding an apartment, or completing a checklist. It’s also about understanding how life here really works.

At Your Friend in Paris, we help you navigate both sides of the move: the practical and the cultural.

There are things you’ll learn from a guidebook. There are things you’ll learn in French class. And then there are the things you’ll only learn once you start living in Paris. 🇫🇷

The little habits. The unspoken etiquette. The everyday customs that quietly shape life in France, and can make the difference between feeling like a visitor and feeling at home. 🇫🇷✨

Here are a few things you’ll only understand once you start living here:

1. Always start with “Bonjour.”
Before asking a question, placing an order, or switching to English, greet the person first. A sign of respect goes a long way.

2. Trust the chef.
French restaurants are proud of their recipes. While you can ask for changes, don’t be surprised if the answer is “non.”

3. The Parisian smile is different.
Parisians may seem reserved at first, but politeness matters more than constant smiling. A simple bonjour, merci, and au revoir will get you much further.

4. Paris follows its own rhythm.
Coffee is often enjoyed standing at the counter, lunch is a real break, and finding a hot meal between lunch and dinner service can be a challenge.

Respect the culture, and the culture will welcome you.
The more you embrace these little customs, the more Paris starts to feel like home.

Moving to Paris isn’t just about finding an apartment or getting a visa.

It’s about understanding the everyday habits that help you feel like you belong.

Everyone talks about learning French. Nobody talks about learning the everyday food culture that comes with living in France. 🇫🇷

When you move to Paris, you’ll discover that mealtimes come with their own traditions and unwritten customs.

Here are 5 French eating habits that catch almost every newcomer by surprise:

1. Your duck is supposed to be pink. 🥩
In France, rosé means perfectly cooked, not undercooked.

2. Dessert isn’t a guilty pleasure. 🧁
Whether it’s fruit, yogurt, chocolate, or a pastry, something sweet is part of everyday life.

3. Your baguette won’t come in a plastic bag. 🥖
Fresh bread is bought daily, carried in paper, and often eaten before you even get home.

4. Lunch isn’t something to “grab.” 🍷
Meals are meant to be enjoyed, and for many people, a glass of wine is simply part of an ordinary lunch.

5. Never pay for water unless you want to. 🚰
Ask for une carafe d’eau and you’ll receive free tap water like the locals do.

These aren’t just eating habits, they’re small cultural moments that make life in France feel… French. 🇫🇷✨

If you’re planning on moving to Paris, these are the little things no relocation checklist tells you.

Paris can feel extravagant in the most ordinary ways. ✨

A lunch break you actually take the time to enjoy. A glass of wine on a terrace after work. An afternoon spent among masterpieces. A flea-market find that becomes your favourite piece at home. A croissant from the neighbourhood boulangerie, or a night at the opera simply because it’s Tuesday. ✨

Once Paris becomes home, the experiences you once saved for a special trip start to become part of an ordinary week. And perhaps that is the real luxury of living here.

5 things worth paying for once you live in Paris. 🇫🇷

Not the big stuff — not rent, not the dossier headaches. The things that make life here feel like life here, rather than just a longer vacation. 💙

What would you add to this list? 👇

Concerts
Every global superstar stops in Paris. No more flights, no more hotels, and no more spending a fortune just to see your favorite artist. Here, you hop on the metro — and you’re there.

Culture, the Second Layer
Once you’ve seen Notre-Dame, the Louvre, and the Moulin Rouge, the real Paris begins. Small cabarets, temporary exhibitions, gallery openings, fashion shows, hidden wine tastings. Paris’ cultural scene is always changing — and soon, you’ll know where to be. ✨

Beautiful Objects
Paris probably won’t give you a huge apartment, so you learn to choose quality over quantity. An antique butter dish, a small sculpture, a painting you can’t stop thinking about. It’s never really about the price tag — it’s about making everyday life beautiful.

Food from Everywhere
World-class cuisine, made by people who grew up with it. Somali steak tartare. Senegalese thiéboudienne. Michelin-starred restaurants. Paris lets you taste the world without leaving the city. 🧑‍🍳

French Lessons, Real Ones
Not just enough for the boulangerie. A real commitment, from A1 to B2. It’s the investment that changes everything. Doors open, conversations become easier, and one day, deuxième degré might even make you laugh. Unlike most investments, this one stays with you for life. 🇫🇷

Bonus: you get to practice it every day. ✨🇫🇷

Some days this job doesn't feel like work at all.

Today I stood beside my client Camille as she signed for her Paris apartment, a dream 25 years in the making. She was speechless. Completely in shock. And if you know Australians, you know that almost never happens 😉. I wasn't far behind her.

Making Paris my own home never gets old. But making it my clients' home? That's the real magic. To sit in a notary's office and watch a 25-year dream become an address, there's no greater privilege in this work.

Welcome home, Camille. This city is lucky to have you. 🔑🇫🇷
