Kota-Sango(Sangu) 🖤
Gabon, Upper-Ogooué
Height: Height 16 (cm)
Wood, metal, buttons in eyes

The Kota peoples live in a wide area across eastern Gabon and parts of northern Congo. They are perhaps best known in the West for their highly distinctive reliquary guardian figures. Virtually unique within the field of African art, these objects are composed of an underlying wood structure covered with skilfully applied plates and strips of brass and copper - metals which have great prestige amongst the Kota.
Reliquary guardian figures were attached by their lozenge shaped bases to baskets or bundles containing the revered bones of important clan members. The mysterious and striking presence of these figures was intended both to suggest the memory of the ancestors and to protect their bones from desecration or sacrilege. As well as fulfilling the need to maintain good relations between both the living and dead members of a clan or lineage, these figures served 'a less well known purpose in magic rites, particularly in divination and healing, even sometimes, and more covertly, in "black magic".

Grebo anthropomorphic mask
Maryland County - Southeastern Liberia
Vittorio Mangio, Monza, Italy
Javier Lentini, Sant Cugat del Valles, Catalunya
Published and exhibited: "África, la figura imaginada", 2004
“The Grebo use several types of masks, some used for adult initiation or religious ceremonies. The most commonly seen is the war mask, used by warrior societies and formed in the shape of a plank with cylindrical eyes, numbering between two and twelve. The mask is danced in preparation for war and at the funerals of warriors.” Second Face, Museum of Cultural masks

"The Grebo people inhabit the coast of Eastern Liberia and surrounding forests, and are a small ethnic group named after their migration from the Sahara region to Liberia, translating to "leaping monkey people." Known for their ferocity in battle, the construction of their mask work reflects their warrior culture, with flat war masks featuring 3D tubular eyes measuring up to a meter in height. These masks make appearances not only during battles but also at pre-dance rituals and funerals of fallen warriors. Grebo masks have notably influenced the works of Pablo Picasso, who, alongside Georges Braque, created Cubism.

DOGON people, Mali End of 19th Century
Height: (48 cm)
Wood, metal and ritual patina
Ernst and Ruth Anspach Collection, New York, acquired in January 1982
Dogon statuary is linked to "a vast body of myths pertaining to the creation of the universe, the struggle between order and disorder, and the place of mankind within it" (Ezra 1988: 16). Human figures often represented ancestors or mythical heroes such as the founders of a village or lineage. Figures like the offered lot have been identified as portraits of Ya Kamma, "the great female ancestor of the Dogon – Wife (sister) of Kamma (the first ancestor)" (Cissé in Falgayrettes-Leveau 2000: 120).

Kota reliquary guardian figures, such as this one, are unique among African sculptural forms in their combination of wood and hammered metal. It is thought that the figurative form of the mbulu ngulu was intended to reinforce and communicate the reliquary’s intense power. The Kota used reliquary guardian figures to protect and identify the revered bones of family ancestors. The Kota believed that the relics of important men and women retain power after death, providing protection and good fortune to an individual’s descendants. The remains were preserved in containers made of bark or basketry. The mbulu ngulu stood atop this bundle, bound to it at the figure’s lozenge-shaped base.
