HERE ARE SOME REMARKS MADE BY HIS LORDSHIP Mayen M. Ruopdit

My honest and healthy observations about my former lecturer and a colleague at the Starford International University Law School (Dr. Geri Raimondo Legge);

With a lot of respect to him, the first time I saw him as the lead counsel for the defense team, I said it categorically that any client looking for the best orator in court, Dr. Geri is not the right choice. While he remains a very good law lecturer in the classroom, the same cannot be said of him in the courtroom because his major weaknesses are below;

1. He is not very strategic when responding to the legal issues in contention between the parties.
2. He cites irrelevant provisions which weakens the defense's case. Just by way of an example and without necessarily contravening the doctrine of sub judice, it was totally irrelevant to cite Art. 105(2) of the TCRSS, 2011 (as amended) on the removal of the First Vice President yet the case against his client concerned the trial on allegation of criminal charges committed in Nasir in March 2025.
3. His choice of language in a court proceeding is UNETHICAL and UNCONVINCING. Using legal terminologies like Latin phrases renders the defense's case UNCLEAR and UNPERUASIVE to the panel. The modern legal education dictates an advocate to deploy a very SIMPLE and CLEAR legal language to avoid confusing the bench.

Therefore, if the accused persons are determined to get something from this case, then they should reconsider the choice of the defence legal team. In particular, they need to add more professional, strategic and highly organised legal counsels. The next phase of the trial is actually interesting because this is where the evidence implicating the accused persons to the Nasir incident will be presented by the prosecution team. Hence, the defense team will be required to step up their game to destroy the prosecution evidence against their clients.

A Voice from One of the Accused.....

: No one is plotting to assassinate Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the Suspended First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan.

Someone needs to tell my friend, Nathaniel Oyet Pierrino, the Acting Chairman and C-in-C of SPLM/SPLA IO, that issuing false and unfounded allegations is both irresponsible and reckless. Making such statements amounts to incitement and war-mongering, which only undermines peace and stability in our country.

The accusation that there is a plot to kill Dr. Riek Machar Teny was directed at H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit, two unnamed Vice Presidents, and a former Minister of Petroleum who was also not named. The SPLM/SPLA IO people have rushed to assume that the two Vice Presidents are H.E. Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel and H.E. Taban Deng G*i, and that the unnamed former Minister of Petroleum is myself, Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth. This assumption is misleading and baseless, considering that South Sudan has had many Vice Presidents and several former Ministers of Petroleum.

Let me be absolutely clear: Dr. Riek Machar Teny, myself, and many others were protected by H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the Republic of South Sudan, during the July 2016 fighting at J1(State House). H.E. President Kiir has never believed in assassinations or political murders. On the contrary, he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to protecting lives, even in the most difficult circumstances like the one of July 2016 J1 fight.

Today, Dr. Riek Machar Teny remains under the protection of the Presidential Guard. His security is fully guaranteed. H.E. President Kiir has issued strict instructions to the soldiers assigned to his safety, making it clear that nothing should compromise Dr. Riek Machar’s protection.

What is happening in Juba today is purely a legal process involving Dr. Riek Machar Teny and other accused persons. Their issues are being addressed in a court of law. There is no basis whatsoever to fear for the physical safety of any of them.

I therefore strongly urge the public to disregard the false and malicious claims being circulated by Nathaniel Oyet Pierrino. Such fabrications serve no purpose other than to incite division, create fear, and undermine peace, unity, and the rule of law in South Sudan.
