🇬🇧 From 19 October 2026, the China Academy of Art Museum (CAAM) in Hangzhou will present a major retrospective dedicated to CHU Teh-Chun.

Bringing together more than 150 works, archives, correspondence and previously unpublished archival documents, the exhibition explores the genesis of CHU Teh-Chun’s artistic practice through his formative years. It highlights the intellectual, artistic and human influences that shaped his pictorial language, at the intersection of Chinese traditions and Western modernity.

Presented at the China Academy of Art, where CHU Teh-Chun enrolled in 1935 at the age of 15, this retrospective returns to the origins of his artistic journey within an institution shaped by LIN Fengmian’s vision and his ambition to foster a dialogue between artistic cultures.

🇫🇷 À partir du 19 octobre 2026, le China Academy of Art Museum (CAAM) à Hangzhou présentera une importante rétrospective consacrée à CHU Teh-Chun.

Réunissant plus de 150 œuvres, archives, correspondances et documents inédits, l’exposition explore la genèse de l’œuvre de CHU Teh-Chun à travers ses années de formation. Elle met en lumière les influences intellectuelles, artistiques et humaines qui ont façonné son langage pictural, au croisement des traditions chinoises et de la modernité occidentale.

Présentée à la China Academy of Art, où CHU Teh-Chun entre en 1935 à l’âge de 15 ans, cette rétrospective revient aux sources de son parcours au sein d’une institution marquée par la vision de LIN Fengmian et son ambition de faire dialoguer les cultures artistiques.

🇬🇧 CHU Teh-Chun, Gesture in Motion

🖌️ The brush as an extension of the Hand

For CHU Teh-Chun, the brush becomes an extension of the hand, the breath, and the inner movement. Rooted in Chinese calligraphy, which he practiced from an early age, his gestural language gives each stroke its energy, tension, and rhythm.

As shown in the video, the creation of this ink work reveals his complete mastery of the brush: each precise and fluid gesture transforms movement into landscape, bringing the discipline of calligraphic line into dialogue with the freedom of abstraction.

🖌️ Le pinceau, prolongement de la main

Chez CHU Teh-Chun, le pinceau devient le prolongement de la main, du souffle et du mouvement intérieur. Nourrie par la calligraphie chinoise, qu’il pratique dès son plus jeune âge, sa gestuelle donne à chaque trait son énergie, sa tension et son rythme.

Comme le montre la vidéo ci-contre, la réalisation de cette encre révèle une maîtrise totale du pinceau : chaque geste, précis et fluide, transforme le mouvement en paysage et fait dialoguer la rigueur du trait calligraphique avec la liberté de l’abstraction.

🇬🇧 Between Nature and Creation: CHU Teh-Chun in Vitry

“Jardin” 1991, oil on canvas — a work that reflects the place of nature in CHU Teh-Chun’s sensitive universe and echoes the environment in which he lived and worked in his new Atelier.

Between 1990 and 1993, CHU Teh-Chun moved to Vitry-sur-Seine, where he had a spacious Atelier, well suited to the creation of large-scale works and overlooking a flower-filled garden.

The garden, the trees, and above all the flowers held a special place in his daily life. This close relationship with nature accompanied his pictorial research and informed his vision.

In Vitry, the spaces of life and creation came together in the same environment, where painting, calligraphy, and nature entered into a fruitful dialogue.

🇫🇷 Entre nature et création : CHU Teh-Chun à Vitry

« Jardin », 1991, huile sur toile — une œuvre qui témoigne de la place de la nature dans l’univers sensible de CHU Teh-Chun et fait écho à son environnement de vie et de travail dans son nouvel atelier.

Entre 1990 et 1993, son installation à Vitry-sur-Seine lui offre un vaste atelier, propice à la réalisation de grands formats et ouvert sur un grand jardin fleuri.

Le jardin, les arbres et surtout les fleurs occupent une place privilégiée dans son quotidien. Cette proximité avec la nature accompagne sa recherche picturale et nourrit son regard.

À Vitry, lieu de vie et lieu de création se rejoignent ainsi dans un même environnement, où peinture, calligraphie et nature entretiennent un dialogue fécond.

🇬🇧 Heritage, Beyond the Artwork

“Perpetually dissatisfied,” CHU Teh-Chun seemed driven by a deeply personal quest that was difficult to put into words.

A silent man, he chose art as his only language. In his studio, everything spoke of this relentless search: hundreds of brushes, music, poetry, ink works on paper created between paintings…

At the time of his death, CHU Teh-Chun left behind a remarkable body of work: more than 2,500 paintings, along with calligraphies, ink washes and ceramics. And yet, hundreds of works have never been exhibited.

CHU Teh-Chun’s legacy therefore lies not only in what has already been seen, but also in what remains to be discovered.

Preserving, transmitting, sharing and bringing this body of work to light: these are the missions of the Foundation.

🇫🇷 L’héritage, au-delà de l’œuvre.

« Perpétuel insatisfait », CHU Teh-Chun semblait animé par une quête intime, difficile à formuler.
Homme silencieux, il avait choisi l’art comme seul langage. Dans son atelier, tout racontait cette recherche incessante : des centaines de pinceaux, la musique, les poèmes, les encres sur papier réalisées entre deux tableaux…

À sa disparition, CHU Teh-Chun laisse derrière lui une œuvre considérable : plus de 2 500 toiles, auxquelles s’ajoutent des calligraphies, des lavis et des céramiques. Et pourtant, des centaines d’œuvres n’ont encore jamais été montrées.

L’héritage de CHU Teh-Chun ne réside donc pas seulement dans ce qui a déjà été vu, mais aussi dans ce qui reste à découvrir.

Conserver, transmettre, faire connaître et révéler cette œuvre : telles sont les missions de la Fondation.

🇬🇧 An Object, a Memory, a Friendship

Given by Albert Féraud to CHU Teh-Chun when he moved to Vitry in the early 1990s, this table also bears witness to the deep, almost brotherly friendship between the two artists. As Thérèse, CHU’s wife, once said: “They were like brothers.”

For many years, it stood at the heart of CHU’s home, bringing family and friends together and accompanying the artist until the end of his life. It was a quiet witness to countless meals, conversations, encounters, and precious moments.

Today, it continues its story at the Foundation, where it still hosts team meetings, gatherings, and exchanges with our partners and visitors.

A table that has become an object of memory, a witness to friendship, and a legacy that continues to bring people together.

🇫🇷 Un objet, une mémoire, une amitié

Offerte par Albert Féraud à CHU Teh-Chun lors de son installation à Vitry, au début des années 1990, cette table témoigne aussi d’une amitié profonde entre les deux artistes, presque fraternelle. Comme le disait Thérèse, l’épouse de CHU : « C’était comme des frères. »

Longtemps au cœur de la maison de CHU, elle a réuni famille et amis et accompagné l’artiste jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Elle a accompagné CHU Teh-Chun jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, témoin discret de tant de repas, de conversations, de rencontres et de moments précieux.

Aujourd’hui, elle poursuit son histoire au sein de la Fondation, où elle accueille encore réunions d’équipe, rencontres et échanges avec nos partenaires et visiteurs.

Une table devenue objet de mémoire, témoin d’une amitié et d’un héritage qui continue de rassembler.

🇬🇧 Preserving the archives, passing on the memory and celebrating the legacy of CHU Teh-Chun: a fundamental mission of the Foundation.

In the Foundation’s archives, precious correspondence tells an intimate and artistic story, including letters exchanged between CHU Teh-Chun and his artist friends.

Through these letters, friendships, artistic dialogues, personal journeys and memories emerge, offering a glimpse into an era and a vibrant artistic community in motion. These archives are far more than documents: they constitute a living memory, a precious heritage that the Foundation is committed to preserving, documenting and passing on.

Each letter preserves a voice, a relationship, a thought. Together, these testimonies offer a deeper understanding of the man, the artist and his time, while sharing the richness of his journey with future generations.

Dans les archives de la Fondation, des correspondances précieuses racontent une histoire intime et artistique : parmi elles, les lettres échangées entre CHU Teh-Chun et ses amis artistes.

Au fil des courriers se dessinent des liens d’amitié, des dialogues autour de l’art, des parcours et des souvenirs qui témoignent d’une époque et d’une communauté artistique en mouvement.

🇬🇧 The Gaze as a Journey

How can we look at a work without immediately trying to name it?

From a distance, Untitled appears as a dark, almost monumental mass. Up close, the surface reveals something quite different: gestures, scratches, transparencies and accidents come together to create a constantly shifting materiality.

Some traces seem covered, diluted or erased — fragments of a visual memory. The white, far from being mere empty space, creates moments of breathing room and sets the darker masses in motion.

The work reveals itself at different speeds: it is to be observed, explored and approached without ever settling into a definitive form. Landscape, presence, writing or simply gesture — each viewer is invited to let their own perception emerge.

Where does your gaze enter the work? Where does it stop?

🇫🇷 Le regard comme parcours

Comment regarder une œuvre sans chercher immédiatement à la nommer ?

De loin, Sans titre apparaît comme une masse sombre, presque monumentale. De près, la surface se révèle autrement : gestes, griffures, transparences et accidents composent une matière en mouvement.

Certaines traces semblent recouvertes, diluées, effacées — comme les fragments d’une mémoire visuelle.

Le blanc, loin d’être un simple vide, ouvre des respirations et met en tension les masses sombres.

L’œuvre se découvre ainsi à plusieurs vitesses : elle se regarde, se parcourt, se laisse approcher sans livrer de forme définitive. Paysage, présence, écriture ou simple geste : il appartient à chacun de laisser apparaître ce qu’il perçoit.

🇬🇧 Contemplating a CHU Teh-Chun painting differently

Looking before seeing.
In this fragment of Force d’équilibre, 1997, CHU Teh-Chun draws us into the heart of painterly gesture: deep blues, traversed by greens, oranges, and luminous yellows, where each stroke seems to simultaneously hold and release the light.

Then the entire work is revealed.
And the fragment takes on a different meaning: what might have seemed like isolated bursts of colour are, in fact, part of a subtle architecture of tensions and balances.

In this gestural abstraction, CHU Teh-Chun does not depict the landscape: he conveys its sensory experience — movement, light, and instability.

To zoom in is not to diminish the work.�It is to enter into its gesture.

Regarder avant de voir.

🇬🇧 The Flourishing of Summer

In this painting, CHU Teh-Chun does not paint a landscape: he captures its breath.

The canvas comes alive through rapid brushstrokes, sweeping gestures, and layers of translucent colour unfolding in a continuous movement. Deep greens and luminous blues seem to pulse, while bursts of red and orange emerge like glowing embers at the heart of the composition.

Everything is momentum, intensity, and flourishing. The pictorial matter unfolds with a controlled spontaneity, evoking a sensation of growth, light, and vital force. Faithful to his abstract language, CHU Teh-Chun transforms nature into a sensory experience, where gesture becomes breath and colour becomes energy.

A painting that reveals not so much summer itself, but the intensity of its essence.

Ici, CHU Teh-Chun ne peint pas un paysage : il en restitue le souffle.

La toile s'anime de coups de pinceau rapides, de larges gestes et de voiles de couleur qui se superposent dans un mouvement incessant. Les verts profonds et les bleus lumineux semblent palpiter, tandis que des éclats rouge-orangé jaillissent comme des braises au cœur de la composition.

Tout est élan, ardeur et épanouissement. La matière picturale se déploie avec une spontanéité maîtrisée, faisant naître une sensation de croissance, de lumière et de force vitale. Fidèle à son langage abstrait, CHU Teh-Chun transforme la nature en une expérience sensible, où le geste devient souffle et où la couleur devient énergie.

Une peinture qui donne à voir moins l'été qu'elle n'en exprime l'intensité.
