🇬🇧 THE CHU TEH-CHUN PRIZE AWARDED TO THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF DAKAR (ISD) ON JUNE 11 IN SUPPORT OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF YOUNG ARTISTS.

Now in its 4th edition, the 2026 Chu Teh-Chun Prize, established through a collaboration between the Fondation Chu Teh-Chun and the International School of Dakar (ISD), seeks to support emerging young artists by fostering artistic excellence and recognizing outstanding commitment and achievement in the visual arts.

The Jury of the Chu Teh-Chun Prize 2026 carefully reviewed this year’s artistic proposals and was deeply impressed by the richness of the contemporary approaches, the quality of the visual research, and the students’ artistic commitment inspired by the work of Chu Teh-Chun.

🏆 First Prize — Kristen Sendogo. Recognized for a work of remarkable expressive power, combining sensitivity, innovation, and a strong artistic vision. The jury particularly praised the depth of the visual research, technical mastery, and meaningful connection to CHU Teh-Chun’s artistic legacy.

🥈 Second Prize — Emma Brandau. Awarded for a refined and compelling proposal distinguished by its creative commitment and contemporary visual language. Her work reflects a promising and highly personal artistic exploration inspired by CHU Teh-Chun.

🥉 Third Prize — Iona Salhab. Honored for the originality of her approach, the sensitivity of her work, and the quality of her visual exploration. The jury also highlighted her strong understanding of CHU Teh-Chun’s artistic vision.

👏 Congratulations to all participating students from the International School of Dakar for the exceptional quality of their work and for contributing to the artistic and cultural impact of the 2026 edition of the Chu Teh-Chun Prize.

✨Settled in a modest hotel room on Rue Lhomond, just steps away from the Luxembourg Gardens, Chu Teh-Chun discovered a city that would profoundly transform his way of seeing.

✨His earliest Parisian views, still figurative, already reveal a sensibility in which space and light take precedence over the subject itself.

🇬🇧 The transformation of landscape in CHU Teh-Chun’s work

CHU Teh-Chun never painted the landscape directly from nature; instead, he allowed it to be transformed through memory, sensation, and time.

This vision reached a monumental scale during his 1982 exhibition at the Musée d’Art moderne André Malraux in Le Havre, where he presented several large-format works — including Au Commencement — animated by luminous bursts and deep chromatic vibrations.

In CHU Teh-Chun’s work, space is no longer described: it becomes breath, energy, and sensation.

🇫🇷 La métamorphose du paysage chez CHU Teh-Chun

CHU Teh-Chun ne peint jamais le paysage sur le motif : il le laisse d’abord se transformer par la mémoire, la sensation et le temps.

Cette vision atteint une ampleur monumentale lors de l’exposition de 1982 au Musée d’art moderne André Malraux du Havre, où il présente plusieurs grands formats — dont Au Commencement — traversés d’éclats lumineux et de profondes vibrations chromatiques.

Chez CHU Teh-Chun, l’espace n’est plus décrit : il devient souffle, énergie, sensation.

🇬🇧 From Contemplation to Revelation: The Poetic Transmutation in Chu Teh-Chun’s Work

✨ Chu Teh-Chun never painted en plein air; he deliberately rejected the practice of direct observation, favoring instead an inner elaboration in which the landscape—already transformed by memory and sensation—became a mental material.

✨ For him, the brevity of a chromatic encounter or the sudden flash of a composition glimpsed in the real world was enough to trigger a shift: the visual event, lifted from its context, rose to the level of an emotional and imaginative catalyst.

✨ Thus, his pictorial gesture did not stem from faithful observation, but from a poetic transmutation in which emotion took precedence over the physical presence of the world.

🇫🇷 Du regard à la révélation : la transmutation poétique chez Chu Teh-Chun

✨ Chu Teh-Chun ne peignait jamais en plein air ; il refusait délibérément la pratique du motif direct, lui préférant une élaboration intérieure où le paysage, déjà métamorphosé par la mémoire et la sensation, devenait un matériau mental.

✨ Chez lui, la brièveté d’une rencontre chromatique ou la fulgurance d’un cadrage aperçu dans le réel suffisait à provoquer un déplacement : l’événement visuel, arraché à son contexte, s’élevait au rang de catalyseur affectif et imaginatif.

✨Between 1965 and 1978, CHU Teh-Chun fully mastered his pictorial language, presenting 24 solo exhibitions across Europe.

✨In 1967, his exhibition at Galerie Raeber in Lucerne confirmed his growing European recognition and introduced Swiss audiences to a body of work of remarkable poetic power.

🇫🇷 A.R.C.H.I.V.E.S - Entre 1965 et 1978, l’affirmation d’un maître de l’abstraction

✨Entre 1965 et 1978, CHU Teh-Chun maîtrise désormais pleinement son écriture picturale, il réalise 24 expositions personnelles à travers l’Europe.

✨En 1967, son exposition à la galerie Raeber de Lucerne consacre cette reconnaissance européenne naissante et révèle au public suisse une œuvre d’une puissance poétique exceptionnelle.

🇬🇧 Paris 1955 - Académie de la Grande Chaumière: The Birth of a Vision

Upon his arrival in Paris in 1955, CHU Teh-Chun became part of the vibrant artistic scene of Montparnasse. The Académie de la Grande Chaumière was then a central hub for training and experimentation for many international artists.

There, the body becomes less a subject than a field of formal exploration: volumes, rhythms, tensions, and the circulation of light. Within this atmosphere of artistic freedom, the figure gradually simplifies, transforms, and tends toward a more structural construction.

🇫🇷 Paris 1955 - Académie de la Grande Chaumière: la naissance d’un regard

À son arrivée à Paris en 1955, CHU Teh-Chun s’inscrit dans l’effervescence artistique de Montparnasse. L’Académie de la Grande Chaumière est alors un lieu central de formation et d’expérimentation pour de nombreux artistes internationaux.

Le corps y devient moins un sujet qu’un champ d’exploration plastique : volumes, rythmes, tensions et circulation de la lumière. Dans ce contexte de liberté, la figure se simplifie progressivement, se transforme, et tend vers une construction plus structurelle.

🇬🇧 Au bord du Jialing : A Rare Work – Freedom in the Making

🌊A rare painting dated 1951, in which Chu Teh-Chun already explores a remarkable sense of freedom within figuration. In At the Banks of the Jialing, the movement of the figures animates the river scene in China, while the composition remains firmly structured.

🌊The more fluid brushwork and the circulation of light reveal a sensibility in the midst of transformation, foreshadowing the major developments to come in his oeuvre. Infused with “Cézannian” echoes, the composition brings together structural construction and a luminous sensitivity, alongside a brushwork that is already moving toward greater freedom.

🇫🇷 Au bord du Jialing : une œuvre rare - la liberté en gestation

🌊Un tableau rare, daté de 1951, dans lequel Chu Teh-Chun explore déjà une grande liberté au sein de la figuration. Dans Au bord du Jialing, le mouvement des personnages anime la scène fluviale du Jialing en Chine, tandis que la structure demeure solidement construite.

🌊La touche picturale, plus fluide, et la circulation de la lumière révèlent une sensibilité en pleine mutation, annonçant les évolutions majeures à venir dans son œuvre. Traversée par des accents « cézanniens », la composition fait dialoguer la construction du motif avec une sensibilité lumineuse et une liberté de touche en devenir.

🇬🇧 Portrait Series by CHU Teh-Chun

Before his arrival in France in 1955, Chu Teh-Chun sold the majority of his works in order to finance his departure for Paris.

In Taipei (1951–1955), he taught and painted portraits of friends and close acquaintances, developing a personal style that combines a strong sense of volume and structure, rich color, and a tension between Western figuration and Chinese sensibility. The faces are often introspective and silent, carried by a subtly crafted light.

Here are two portraits by Chu Teh-Chun that are rarely shown.

🖼️ 1. This figurative portrait, painted between 1952 and 1953, depicts Jiang Biwei, the companion of the renowned Chinese painter Xu Beihong.

🖼️ 2. Portrait of Hung Hsien - 1954. Born in Yangzhou, China, in 1933, Hung Hsien moved to Taiwan with her family in 1948. She studied painting at Taiwan Normal University under CHU. Since the 1980s, she has lived and worked in Houston, Texas.

Avant son arrivée en France en 1955, Chu Teh-Chun vend la majorité de ses œuvres afin de financer son départ pour Paris.

À Taipei (1951–1955), il enseigne et peint des portraits d’amis et de proches, développant un style personnel où se mêlent rigueur des volumes, richesse des couleurs et tension entre figuration occidentale et sensibilité chinoise. Les visages y sont souvent intérieurs, silencieux, portés par une lumière subtile.

Voici deux portraits réalisés par l’artiste rarement montrés.

🖼️ 1. Ce portrait figuratif, peint entre 1952-1953, représente Jiang Biwei, compagne du grand peintre chinois Xu Beihong.

🖼️ 2. Portrait de Hung Hsien - 1954. Née à Yangzhou, en 1933, Hung Hsien s’installe à Taïwan avec sa famille en 1948. Elle étudie la peinture à l’Université normale de Taïwan auprès de CHU. Depuis les années 1980, elle vit et travaille à Houston, au Texas.
