Orafrica works for the contemporary valorisation of sub-Saharan culture shall it was born in Africa or inspired by it. Place of encounters and reflexion, the association aims at promoting both creations and their reflexive counterparts. Director of exhibition space APPARTEMENT, Nathalie Miltat, started the association. It carries different projects that aim to answer the yet pressing need of peren
nial structures around sub-Saharan art. ORAFRICA intends to become a platform for creation, reflexion and gathering for artists, curators, thinkers, writers and musicians alike. It aims to valorise initiatives coming from Africa but also to echo the specific interrogations of the sub-Saharan culture in Europe, as it is based in Paris. One of Orisha’s projects is the creation of annual symposiums divided in three moments during the year. It is closed by the celebration of the Orisha prize for contemporary African art in October, which first edition happened in 2014. The first edition of the symposiums will coincide with the launch of Orafrica’s website in February 2017. Orafrica is also an invitation, an opening to youth, solidarity and discussion. Thus it also organises informal encounters to promote innovative iniatives in collaboration with APPARTEMENT.

L’association ORAFRICA a pour but la valorisation contemporaine de la culture sub-saharienne. Basée à Paris et fondée par Nathalie Miltat, directrice de l’espace d’exposition APPARTEMENT, l’association est une plateforme de valorisation multiforme. Elle est porteuse de plusieurs grands projets qui répondent d’un besoin encore pressant de structures pérennes autour de l’art africain sub-saharien contemporain à l’international. ORAFRICA entend devenir une plateforme de création, de réflexion et de rencontres pour artistes, commissaires, penseurs, écrivains et musiciens issus de la multiplicité de la culture sub-saharienne, diasporas incluses. Si elle entend particulièrement valoriser les initiatives venant d’Afrique, elle entend aussi faire échos aux interrogations spécifiques des cultures d’Afrique sub-saharienne en Europe, espace à partir de laquelle elle parle. Un des grands projets d’ORAFRICA est la création de colloques à l’année, répartis en trois temps qui seront clôturés chaque année par la remise du prix ORISHA pour l’art contemporain (première édition 2014). La première édition des colloques sera concomitante à la lancée du site web de l’association en février 2017. ORAFRICA se veut aussi une invitation, une ouverture à la jeunesse, à la solidarité et à la discussion, aussi organise-t-elle des rencontres informelles de promotion en collaboration avec APPARTEMENT.
