Have you heard of Marianna Costade ?

She’s a French Congolese and Senegalese photographer.
She started her self portrait series after getting a new hairstyle at a local salon and feeling the need to capture it.

Through these series she embraces her cultural heritage and promotes ancestral African hairstyles.
Before each portrait, she does extensive research on the history of the hairstyle.

In her own words :
“Mes autoportraits mettent en lumière des coiffures ancestries africaines, chaque cliché étant une redécouverte de ces trésors culturels souvent oubliés. Pour moi, l’autoportrait est plus qu’une simple image; c’est une exploration de mon identité et un hommage à notre héritage. Ces coiffures, riches de significations et de symbolismes, méritent d’être vues et reconnues dans notre communauté et au-delà.”

Her work has been exhibited in Amsterdam, Paris and more.

Her first solo exhibition is now showing until May 2nd at Jah Jah Studio in Paris. It was curated by .drn

Hey everyone 🌞
I’m back 🥹
I disappeared for almost a year, I felt so overwhelmed after creating this magazine feeling like I was not good enough, not professional enough. I was overwhelmed with starting my studies again, looking for job opportunities in this art world. But today I’ve realised women in art is my baby.
Promoting women artists, especially rising talents is what moves me.
Lately I have been working on .acclub alongside very talented women, organising guided tours in museums and gallery tours. I have created a community of young people aged between 18-30 years old based in Paris, all passionate about art 💐 making art accessible to everyone 🌞

But in 2025 and starting from now I want to keep working on Women In Art Magazine. The website is currently down since I am alone on this project and have way too many things to do 😅
HOWEVER I will promote every week talented women artists. Every month I will show the best exhibitions to see with women artists. I will also start promoting content creators who work to make culture more accessible 🫶🏻

But please don’t be mad if I don’t reply much or am not as active as I used to be. Social media does take a toll on its users and I try my best to be out of its toxic influence

Anyway I did miss you and will do my best to promote all these talented beautiful women artists ❤️

Love always,
Lori

Meet the visual artist Malak Mattar

Born in Gaza in 1999, she started painting after Israel’s military assault on Gaza in 2014. She first used watercolours from her school and started posting her work online.

Through her art, she released her fear, anxiety and panic. Her work gained international recognition and was featured in various exhibitions throughout the UK, India, France, Turkey and much more.

In 2023 she was awarded a solo exhibition at the Garden Court Chambers in London as well as a global talent visa.

Women play a central role in her paintings and through her art she wishes to give another perspective on Palestinian people than portrayed in western media.

You can support her work by following her account & buy her art on her Etsy shop.

We visited the Egyptian art department at the Louvre with Samira, a student specialising in Egyptian art at l’Ecole du Louvre 🌞

It was absolutely incredible & we learnt so much 🥰

We discovered the important time frames, important kings & pharaohs as well as important female figures. But we also learnt more about how certain art pieces came into European museum and their controversy.

Meet Karimeh Abbud (1893-1940) the first Palestinian woman photographer 📸

Born in Bethlehem in a Christian family, she grew up in a multicultural environment. She spoke fluently Arabic English and German. She studied Arabic literature at the American university of Beirut.

An Amernian photographer taught her photography and her father gave her her first camera in 1913. She started taking pictures of women and children.

Calling herself the “Lady Photographer” women from all around Palestine came to take their pictures taken in her studio. Karimeh developed her own photos and through her work she wanted to promote Palestinian women and resist the British occupation.

She documented the everyday life of Palestinian women and children before the Nakba.

If her work interests you you can read more about her on the website of the interactive encyclopaedia of the Palestine question. 🇵🇸

Women In Art Magazine strongly condemns the genocide happening in Palestine.
It is of the utmost importance for cultural institutions, magazines etc to support Palestinian artists.

We recommend the incredible curation by featuring talented Palestinian artists.
We admire courage for speaking up about what is happening right now.

We will soon post about how to help, resources & recommendations to understand the situation better.
Meanwhile we will keep featuring Palestinian women artists 🇵🇸💗

The picture features a translated extract from the poem “Resist My People, Resist Them” by Palestinian poet & photographer Dareen Tatour
