“The day we stop believing democracy can work is the day we lose it.”
Queen Amidala was always one of the most important characters in Star Wars to me because she represented something that I also stand for, compassion without weakness. She was young, underestimated, emotional, but also diplomatic, intelligent, and still willing to stand firmly against fear and authoritarianism even when nobody wanted to listen. Something we need more of.
Padmé lives in a galaxy obsessed with power and control so she makes it a point to reminds everyone that democracy survives through people who continue to care when cynicism would be easier. She cares about the little guy and the ones who are struggling.
That’s why I’ve always admired her, and why I wanted to do a Padmé bound for my very first May the Fourth at the parks. She’s a character I’ve always looked up to and genuinely see as an incredible role model because she’s strong without losing her softness and hopeful without being naïve, just like I strive (and hope) to be.
Also, if you love Padmé you should divinely read Queen’s Shadow. It adds so much depth to her character and honestly made me appreciate her even more, especially everything related to the reason behind her extravagant outfits.
I’m also incredibly grateful that I got to experience this year’s celebration as part of the Buzz Members team at Disneyland Paris. We got to try the Grogu burger and macaron, received an exclusive card, pin, and lanyard, rode Star Tours, got dramatically arrested by Stormtroopers, and ended the afternoon meeting Mando and Grogu themselves. A pretty perfect way to spend May the Fourth.
Thank you Disneyland Paris for such a special day in a galaxy far, far away.
Can you spot the hidden Mickey?
