Early in the fourth century, Saint Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ’s life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Savior’s tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher on that spot. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman.

The cross immediately became an object of veneration.

The cross is today the universal image of Christian belief. Countless generations of artists have turned it into a thing of beauty to be carried in procession or worn as jewelry. To the eyes of the first Christians, it had no beauty. It stood outside too many city walls, decorated only with decaying corpses, as a threat to anyone who defied Rome’s authority—including Christians who refused sacrifice to Roman gods. Although believers spoke of the cross as the instrument of salvation, it seldom appeared in Christian art unless disguised as an anchor or the Chi-Rho until after Constantine’s edict of toleration. We are each created as unique and unrepeatable. Even when instructed to paint the exact same image, the uniqueness of each person is reflected in their work, revealing something about the person’s individuality.

Artist adds the finishing touches to a painting of John Paul II commissioned by a ministry.

We need more churches, groups and individuals to commission high art and keep masterpieces present in our churches.

We pray to pope John Paul II to guide all artists.

Why JP2? A modern day pope?

As a Playwright, Actor & Poet, he was a .

If anyone "got" the journey of the artist, it was Pope John Paul II.

He understood the great responsibility and mission of being a creative, to bring Christ—the Word made flesh—into the world through art.

He wrote a letter—really, more like an anthem, "to all who are passionately dedicated to the search for new 'epiphanies' of beauty so that through their creative work as artists they may offer these as gifts to the world."

He also understood that the creative needs to receive inspiration from the Creator, namely through beauty. And to get that fix of inspiration, from the time he was young would be found hiking, boating and picnicking...all while looking.more hip than we can ever hope to be.

Pope John Paul II, pray for us, that we may be as b.a. as you were.

Love this photo of friends perusing the art collection at . A sign of good friendship: to teach your peers the value of good art and culture. This group of friends regularly attended gallery nights and visited architectural gems to learn more about culture. Millennials, GenZ and all younger generations need to learn to appreciate quality art and humanities.

Barren. Sterile. Bastardized. Just some of the words that come to mind when viewing some of the contemporary art. Another word is depraved (I’ve left out those images as they may not be appropriate). Is it creative? Sure. Is it art? What is even art?

I’ve shared this before and I’ll say it again: Art is a glimpse into the human heart and reading the hearts of others through these works fills me with sadness. There is a lack of hope, there is woundedness, there is gloom and there is emptiness. The work does not inspire or uplift. It invites you into muck and you stay there. It doesn’t invite contemplation.

Could one get mad? Yes and no. Yea for those who use creativity as an excuse to make money (as I heard an art professor say: invent some BS meaning and people will eat it up), but one also can’t be upset at those who are expressing what’s in their hearts: the hurt they feel, the injustices they’ve seen, the lack of hope in their lives.

So where do we go from here?
