HUGUES REIP, L’ÉVASION
Currently at Crédac, until July the 1st.

Hugues Reip - sculptor, draftsman, photographer, video artist, musician and, possibly above all, « gardener of the supernatural » - has taken over the Crédac and turned its raw yet bright and warm spaces into a place where escape.
L’Évasion (The Escape) is indeed Reip’s latest solo exhibition that gathers key works and new productions : from « 0,25 » a series of tiny sculptures made of various materials in 1990-1991, considered as the earliest – humble – œuvres of the artist, up to the site-specific work « Windowblow », a photograph printed on a transparent film and placed on a window of the building as an overprint on the urban surroundings, through « Noirs desseins » , series of drawings enriched with collages, or « Black Sheeps », a mobile installation evocative of multiple references, among others.
From work to work, Hugues Reip makes thus a fantastic herbarium and a fanciful bestiary arise in quite uncanny atmospheres so that as visitors we experience a trip through a wonderland as hallucinatory as exquisitely witty.

The Crédac – Centre d’art contemporain d’Ivry – is an institution devoted to the production, the experimentation and the exhibition of the contemporary artistic creation. Founded in 1987, the center is hosted, since September 2011 on the 3rd floor of the Manufacture des Œillets (Eyelets Factory), a former brick and steel industrial building, built in 1913 following the Chicago School and the Bauhaus’ inspirations.

Avec « La photographie française existe… je l’ai rencontrée », Jean-Luc Monterosso marque son départ de la Maison Européenne de la Photographie, institution qu’il a lui-même fondée et dirigée, et qui occupe le bâtiment de la rue de Fourcy depuis 1996.

Une affirmation en forme d’exposition qui parcourt des années d’acquisitions et d’expositions historiques, qui représente, en même temps, une réponse à un propos que - raconte Monterosso - au début des années ’80, John Szarkowski (à l’époque conservateur pour la photographie au MoMA) lui aurait tenu, au cours de leur première rencontre, sur l’état de la « jeune photographie française », à savoir… « It doesn’t exist ».

« Pour illustrer ce qui était alors cette jeune photographie française en plein devenir, j’ai choisi dans la collection de la MEP les œuvres de photographes que j’ai rencontrés, et que j’ai aimés », déclare Monterosso qui nous livre donc, dans cette dernière exposition, un choix d’œuvres qui se revendique personnel et subjectif.

Personnellement, nous avons trouvé un brin décevant de voir une place trop importante occupée par quelques photographes aujourd’hui assez consensuels et par ailleurs (sans doute, sur)exposés (Orlan, Bettina Rheims, Pierre & Gilles, par exemple) tandis que nous aurions apprécié de revoir ou de redécouvrir davantage de travaux d’autres artistes certainement pas moins intéressants et significatifs comme Philippe Ramette ou Philippe Perrin, entre autres.

Néanmoins cette exposition nous offre un beau témoignage de la richesse de la scène photographique française de ces trente dernières années que Jean-Luc Monterosso aura « accompagnée » et soutenue avec profondeur et générosité tout au long de sa carrière.

Yesterday we attended the private vernissage of Van Dongen & le Bateau Lavoir at the Musée de Montmartre. Van Dongen's work was a real treat. He had a very soft way to portray the charm of Montmartre during the early 20th century. A highly recommended exhibition to view Paris from the top.
