"In the digital age it is so easy to sit in your room and waste hours just scrolling, but nothing is better than getting out of the house and socializing with friends. You don't have to do this alone."

Nicolas Cage Brings the Noir Grit to Marvel: Watch Spider-Noir Season 1 on Prime Video

The story goes that a young, teenage Nicolas Coppola was riding in a car with his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola (already famous for The Godfather), and boldly asked him for a screen test to prove he could act. Francis reportedly replied with something along the lines of, "No, you’re not an actor."

Instead of letting that crush him, Nicolas used it as absolute fuel. Here is how he proved everyone wrong and forged his own path:

The Name Change: Stepping Out of the Shadow
Nicolas quickly realized that carrying the "Coppola" name was a double-edged sword. On his early auditions (like for the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High), casting directors and crew members wouldn't stop asking him about his famous uncle, or accusing him of riding on family coattails.

To find out if he actually had talent on his own merits, he legally changed his name to Nicolas Cage. His inspiration came from two distinct places:

Luke Cage: The Marvel comic book superhero (Cage is a massive comic nerd and even owned a pristine copy of Action Comics #1).

John Cage: The avant-garde, rule-breaking American composer.

Proving Everyone Wrong
The name change worked like magic. Free from the weight of his family tree, he immediately landed his breakout role in Valley Girl (1983), and his career exploded from there.
He didn't just become a "good" actor; he became an Academy Award winner (for Leaving Las Vegas in 1995) and one of the most recognizable, chaotic, and uniquely brilliant stars in cinema history.

Fun Postscript: Francis Ford Coppola didn't stay a skeptic for long. Once Nicolas proved his talent, Francis actually cast him in several of his own films, including Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, and Peggy Sue Got Married.
