The large audience for the silent film at Pori Central Church this evening was treated to a special experience when Donald MacKenzie, one of the great masters of his craft, accompanied the Harold Lloyd film 'For Heaven's Sake' on the organ as part of the Pori Organ Festival. Donald MacKenzie has presided at the mighty Theater organ in the Odeon Luxe, London, for 33 years. He is an acclaimed concert organist, and his reputation extends to being the doyen of silent film accompanists.
His vast experience showed as he accompanied Harold Lloyd’s comedy ‚For Heaven’s Sake‘. The synchronization between film and music was just perfect and he used popular themes, such as ‘Guarda che luna’ (Hopeinen Kuu), He even found a way to integrate Wagner in the chaotic proceedings and used the tonal and dynamic possibilities of the organ superbly.
The story of the movie was interesting: An Uptown Boy, J. Harold Manners (Lloyd) is a millionaire pl***oy who falls for the Downtown Girl, Hope, who works in Brother Paul's (Weigel) mission. In order to build up attendance, and win Hope's attention, Harold runs through town causing trouble, and winds up with a crowd chasing him right into the mission. He eventually marries Hope, but not without some interference from his high-brow friends.
