Sustainability is not limited to questions of the environment, social and economic prosperity. Implementation of sustainable development strategies within art institutions and residencies is directly related to the certain people responsible for making decisions and implementing them.

Reside/Sustain has written a blog post for Mustekala .info on the topic of residency activities and sustainability. The text serves as a summary of the project and it’s core activities with a focus on various facets of sustainability, their interconnectedness, and residencies’ potential to support them.

“In an interesting way, the activities of art residencies include diverse elements from traveling and residing abroad to different work practices. Residency activities also include communication and interaction. This offers an opportunity to take into account how in the field of art (as well as more broadly) it is possible to enable a transition towards the sustainability of personal, social and ecological aspects while being aware of their essential connection.”

In the text “Tavrida's Federal Network of "art residencies": chimeras of state youth cultural design” Adel Kim explores the parallel existence of professional art residencies and initiatives that call themselves “residencies” but in fact have very little to do with them in Russia.

(РУС в комментариях ↓)

This coexistence and free interpretation of the term in Russian context brings opacity to the field, and poses a risk of the altered understanding of residencies being widely adopted.

Reside/Sustain project is reaching its final stage.

(РУС в комментариях ↓)

Currently, we are working on producing several articles in collaboration with invited experts, blog post for a Finnish interdisciplinary and artistic magazine, and creating two publications in English and Russian languages.

The English version of the publication will wrap up the work that has been done in the past three years. Second publication will act as a toolkit for residency practicioners.

While we might not be as active on social media, we have a lot of resources available on residesustain.art that you are welcome to discover and utilise, as well as resources on the topic of sustainability we gathered: https://residesustain.art/en

In 2024, Reside/Sustain participant Adel Kim and curator Vera Kavaleuskaya are starting the SWAMP: Art Material Swap and Waste Management Point — project designed to support circular economy by enabling artists and institutions in Helsinki to donate, access, exchange, reuse, and repurpose discarded materials through the creation of Materials Bank.

(РУС в комментариях ↓)

The project aspires to bring about a shift in the field of art, making reuse and repurposing of waste materials a standard and institutionalised practice.

We wish the best of luck to Adel and Vera and cannot wait to see the Materials Bank come to life! ✨

In the article ”Support Structures Behind Russian Art Residencies” we examine how internal trends on banning and overregulating any international financial support for the civil society and the arts, combined with the Western sanctions, further restrictions, and self-sanctions of international companies made the situation with availability of financing extremely difficult for Russia’s civil society and art sectors, especially after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

We also examine the main funding sources of art residencies before and after the war, as well as look into the interest of the residency field in the environmental agenda following Reside/Sustain’s focus on various aspects of sustainability.
