I did quite a lot of planning for this illustration. In addition to looking up images of Link's Fierce Deity form, I also studied lunar eclipses and great sword fighting stances. I even created a fictional lore to help create a story for this drawing!
You see, I set out to anwer two questions with this drawing. I wanted to illustrate what this Fierce Deity originally looked like, and what was his story until he got turned into a mask.
We only have two clues of Fierce Deity's looks: the Fierce Deity mask and Link's transformed version. I used them to make my own interpretation, which you can see in the illustration.
As for the Fierce Deity's story, I came up with the following:
Fierce Deity was a troublesome god. For his actions that are better left unnamed, he was banished onto the Moon for all eternity.
He was forced to travel around the Moon, keeping up with the lit side at all times.
For you see, the shadow side was inhabited by a myriad of savage monsters. They would immediately attack him if he set but a foot into the shadow side.
So as long as he stayed in the light side, he was safe.
Until a total lunar eclipse, that is.
Every few years, and occasionally a couple of times during the year, the Earth would block the Sun and cast the whole Moon into darkness.
That's when Fierce Deity is forced to fight. To defend himself for a couple of hours until the Sun finally starts shining on the Moon's surface once again.
The final safe moments before the lunar eclipse. That's what I drew. Will this be the moment Fierce Deity meets his demise and gets turned into a mask, or will he triumph to live another day on the Moon?
This was a fun exercise for my imagination! And fun Linktober challenge over all! (^v^)
