One thing I’ve noticed since getting properly back into production is how many ideas now start while I’m actually DJing.
Sometimes I’ll hear two tracks and think they might work together, try the combination live, and then come back to it afterwards and turn it into an actual mashup.
It’s quite different from sitting in the studio trying to force an idea from nothing. Playing it in front of people first gives you an immediate idea of whether there’s actually something there.
The Movin’ Too Fast × Blessings mashup I posted recently started exactly like that. I tried the idea live, liked what it did, then went into Ableton afterwards and built a version I can use again.
I’ve spent most of my DJing life playing and mixing other people’s records, so I’m enjoying reaching the point where more of what I play has something of my own in it — whether that’s a mashup, remix or eventually more original music.
It still feels like I’m finding the balance between the DJ side and the production side, but I think each one is starting to make the other better.
For the DJs/producers on here — do your best ideas usually start in the studio, or while you’re actually playing?
