🔥 Yakisugi: Burning Wood to Protect It

What if the secret to protecting wood was to burn it? The traditional Japanese technique Yakisugi, also known as Shou Sugi Ban, has been perfecting this paradox since the 18th century.

Originally developed to protect coastal homes from Japan’s humid climate, this ancient craft involves charring wood to increase its durability, resistance to pests, and ability to withstand time. The result? A strikingly beautiful and sustainable material with textures and patterns that evoke nature’s raw elegance.

This technique is experiencing a revival, thanks to architects like Terunobu Fujimori, who incorporates Yakisugi into contemporary designs that honor tradition while embracing modern innovation. Whether it’s cedar in Japan or oak in Austria, Yakisugi is a celebration of craftsmanship, durability, and ecological sensitivity.

Gaudí's masterpieces remind us of the incredible role light plays in design and life itself. From the kaleidoscopic interiors of the Sagrada Família to the dappled shadows in Park Güell, Gaudí knew how to harness the sun’s artistry to create magic.

How do you think light transforms spaces? Let’s honor Gaudí’s timeless vision of merging nature and design. 🌞🌿

Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of arranging spaces, teaches us how to create balance and harmony by aligning our surroundings with the flow of energy, or chi. 🌿

Like Gaudí, Feng Shui emphasizes working with nature, not against it. From the placement of furniture to the use of light and natural elements, both approaches show us how design can positively influence our well-being.

Would you bring elements of Feng Shui into your home or workspace? Share your thoughts!

What if every design decision considered not just humans but the entire ecosystem? Life-Centered Design (LCD) invites us to reimagine our approach—focusing on solutions that balance human needs with the health of our planet. 🌱

At the Gaudí World Foundation, we embrace the principles of LCD by fostering innovation inspired by nature and creating sustainable, inclusive designs. By looking at life as an interconnected web, we aim to build a harmonious future where humans, animals, and the environment thrive together.

It’s not just design; it’s a movement toward a better tomorrow.

The Camden Bench, often referred to as the "anti-object," epitomizes hostile architecture—a design approach that deliberately excludes certain groups from public spaces. Created by Factory Furniture for London’s government, this monolithic concrete structure is angled and arched to prevent behaviors deemed undesirable, like sleeping or skateboarding. 🪑

Its design resists graffiti, litter, and even drug use, but its message is clear: certain individuals are not welcome. Hostile architecture disproportionately targets vulnerable populations—like the homeless, teenagers, or marginalized groups—sending a stark message of exclusion.

As Selena Savic, co-author of Unpleasant Design, explains, these elements foster resentment. “You’re designing against a specific group, and that group knows it,” she notes, highlighting the ethical implications of such designs.

At the Gaudí World Foundation, we believe architecture should inspire inclusion and creativity, not alienation. Let’s reimagine public spaces as welcoming environments for all. 🌍✨

In a world of fast-paced construction and cookie-cutter designs, McMansions symbolize excess without purpose—grandiose homes mass-produced with cheap materials and devoid of architectural authenticity. These oversized suburban structures lack the harmony and creativity that define truly inspiring architecture.

On the other hand, the timeless designs we celebrate prioritize functionality, sustainability, and a connection to the natural world. Authentic architecture, like the masterpieces rooted in organic forms, values thoughtful design over fleeting trends.

Let’s embrace designs that honor creativity, craftsmanship, and enduring beauty rather than those built to impress without substance. What does meaningful architecture mean to you? 🌍

🌿 The Gaudí’s of Today: Animal Architecture Collective

How do ants, bees, birds, and fish inspire the future of design? The Animal Architecture Collective—a multidisciplinary team featuring Cardoso Studio, Jennifer Turpin, and —is rethinking architecture through the lens of nature. Taking inspiration from the intricate structures crafted by animals, their work embodies the more-than-human philosophy that aligns deeply with Gaudí’s vision of harmony between nature and design.

As part of their residency at , the collective explores how biodiversity and the craftsmanship of animal architects can inform sustainable and multi-species architecture. Their mission? To reconnect human life with the incredible artistry and ingenuity of the natural world, just as Gaudí did through his groundbreaking designs.

This idea reflects the principles of Origination, blending creativity, sustainability, and humanism—exactly the kind of innovative thinking we love to spotlight in The Gaudí’s of Today series. Let’s imagine a world where human and non-human ingenuity coexist in harmony. 🌍✨

Spot the differences! 👀This stunning villa design is a prime example of the creative results from the UNIST Gaudí Origination Workshop. Inspired by Gaudí's philosophy of Origination, participants crafted innovative concepts blending nature, sustainability, and human-centered design.

The shell-like structure and lagoon-style pool reflect biomimicry at its finest—drawing from organic forms to create a harmonious connection between architecture and the natural world.

The workshop effectively enhanced participants' ability to incorporate natural inspiration into their designs. Through their feedback, their score on how much they were inspired by nature at the beginning of the workshop grew from an average of 4 points to an average of 7 points. This shows that even short, focused activities can significantly influence participants' design perspectives and originality inspired by Nature.

Share with us your nature-inspired design and creations, we would love to see them!

Did you know that Antoni Gaudí used hyperboloids in his designs to bring natural light into spaces? These elegant, curved geometries are more than just aesthetically beautiful—they are a perfect blend of functionality and mathematical precision.

By incorporating hyperboloids into windows and skylights, like those seen in the Sagrada Família, Gaudí achieved a stunning interplay of light and shadow, creating spaces that feel alive and dynamic.

Hyperboloids are also a testament to Gaudí's fascination with nature and his belief in harmony between architecture and the environment. Their airy, open forms mimic the organic structures found in the natural world, making them as timeless as they are innovative.

Gaudí’s genius lay in his ability to transform complex mathematical concepts into breathtaking works of art that still inspire architects and designers today.

🌿 How can we take inspiration from this timeless geometry to create more sustainable and human-centered designs in the modern world?

Designed by Büyükada Songlines redefined the idea of a pavilion during the 5th Istanbul Design Biennial. This floating garden cruised the waters of Marmara and the Bosphorus, linking Istanbul’s Princes’ Islands with the Asian and European shores.

At the Gaudí World Foundation, we are thrilled and inspired to see projects like this, so in line with our commitment to sustainability, creativity, and honoring the harmony between nature and design. 🌍✨
