🌿 International Youth Day

On International Youth Day, 12 August, URI celebrate young people as partners in building peaceful, inclusive and sustainable communities.

This year, we are excited to look ahead to upcoming youth events - one of them is

🌷Garden of Peace, a three-day youth interfaith forum taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 28 to 30 August 2026.

Organized by BRIDGES CC, the gathering will bring together 30 young people from different religious and cultural backgrounds to share experiences, exchange ideas and explore how dialogue can become a pathway to peace.

Together, participants will explore:
🕊️ Interfaith dialogue and a culture of peace and nonviolence
🌱 Ecological justice and shared responsibility
🧩 Memory, identity and intercultural understanding
🤝 Youth participation and leadership

Garden of Peace builds on URI Europe and BRIDGES’ youth interfaith initiatives over the past two years, including Seeding the Peace in The Hague - 2024 and Rivers of Peace in Ruse -2025. These experiences have shown the power of encounter: when young people meet across religious and cultural boundaries, listen to one another and work together, differences can become a starting point for understanding.

The forum will also offer opportunities to meet religious leaders, learn from one another and reflect on how young people can contribute to peace in their own communities.

🎶 The gathering will conclude with a concert celebrating friendship and the richness of cultural diversity - a reminder that peace is not only something we discuss, but something we experience and create together.

On this International Youth Day, we celebrate the young people who are already shaping a more peaceful future and the spaces that give them the opportunity to connect, lead and act.

🕊️ Nelson Mandela International Day Observed in Amsterdam with members of URI the Netherlands CC

On the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, a commemorative programme was held at the Church of Scientology headquarters in Amsterdam. The event brought together participants from different faiths and backgrounds, including members of URI the Netherlands CC, social workers, educators, and representatives of civil society.

Among URI members were the founding father of URI in the Netherlands Ari van Buuren and his wife Liesbeth.

Ram Mohan Rai, General Secretary of the Gandhi Global Family, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the profound influence of Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of truth, nonviolence, and reconciliation on Nelson Mandela's life and leadership. He described Mandela as a global symbol of moral courage, forgiveness, and justice, emphasizing that his decision to pursue reconciliation after 27 years of imprisonment remains an enduring example of peacebuilding.

Reflecting on shared ethical values, Rai noted that Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and L. Ron Hubbard each emphasized the importance of moral responsibility, respect for human dignity, and forgiveness as essential foundations for lasting peace.

The programme concluded with a shared commitment to advancing dialogue, mutual understanding, and a culture of peace across communities.

🕊️ Peacefully Connected CC Marks International Nelson Mandela Day in Brussels

On 18 July 2026, Peacefully Connected CC brought together representatives of 20 nationalities in Brussels to commemorate International Nelson Mandela Day under the theme "Make Every Day a Nelson Mandela Day."

The event focused on human rights, discrimination, migration, conflict, and peaceful coexistence. Through personal stories from participants representing countries including Burundi, Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, Ukraine, and South Africa, the discussion highlighted the importance of protecting human rights both in times of conflict and in everyday life.

Henri-Paul Kindoki presented the Youth for Human Rights educational campaign, which provides human rights materials in more than twenty languages to help young people understand their rights and stand against discrimination.

Participants reflected on Nelson Mandela's legacy of reconciliation and agreed that lasting peace begins with individual action, mutual respect, and dialogue across cultures and communities.

The gathering also highlighted the work of the United Religions Initiative (URI), which brings people of different faiths together to promote understanding and cooperation. Participants discussed opportunities for future initiatives that strengthen human rights, interfaith collaboration, and peaceful living.

The evening concluded with a shared commitment to continue working together to build more inclusive and peaceful communities, inspired by Nelson Mandela's vision that every person deserves dignity, equality, and respect.
