For how beautiful and colourful this island may look (the whole island is a UNESCO heritage site), the history behind it is one of the darkest of the whole African west coast.

From the 15th to the 19th century the Island of Gorée was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French.

The House of Slaves in picture n3 is where the slaves were “stored”, yes, stored! Cause up to 15 people were put inside a room that was 2x3 before sailing to South and North America.

The door you see at the very end of the building is called the Door of No Return, as many as 15 million people passed through it (15 MILLION!!!), entire families were forced to split and this happened for generations… 400-500 years of the same s**t.
