Mohamed Abu Elmagd (born in Alexandria, 1971) is an Egyptian sculptor who has worked primarily with basalt and granite since 1995. He has developed an abstract expressionist style that channels the hidden energy of stone into emotionally resonant forms. For Abu Elmagd, sculpture is a deep interaction between artist and material — not about imposing form, but revealing it. He has participated in over 70 exhibitions in Egypt and internationally, including the Youth Salon, Cairo Biennale, Art Cairo 2025, a group exhibition in Rome, as well as shows at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Russian Cultural Center, and the Palace of Arts. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Salon Prize and the Minister of Culture’s Award. His sculptures are held in private and institutional collections throughout Egypt, the Arab world, and several European countries. Each piece reflects a profound connection with the material, balancing form and emotion through the timeless language of stone.

Discover the work of Abdel Hadi El-Gazzar (1925–1966), one of the most important figures of the second generation of Egyptian artists and among its most enigmatic. His works often invite the viewer to look beyond what is immediately visible and question the meaning behind the elements within the composition.

In this intriguing work, El-Gazzar brings together animals, human figures, and a variety of artistic media, creating a mysterious visual language that leaves room for interpretation. The more we look, the more questions emerge: What is happening within the scene? Why did the artist choose these particular figures and elements? And what message lies beneath them?

Rather than offering a single clear answer, the work invites us to engage, observe, and think, encouraging each viewer to search for their own interpretation of the world El-Gazzar has created.

Salah Taher (1911–2007) was one of Egypt’s most influential modern artists and a leading figure in the development of abstract art in the Arab world. After establishing himself as an accomplished academic and figurative painter, he made a bold transition toward abstraction in the 1950s and 1960s, becoming one of its earliest pioneers in Egypt. At the time, this shift was met with criticism from many of his contemporaries, who questioned whether abstraction could be considered art and believed Taher was capable of producing far more “finished” academic works. Yet his unwavering commitment to experimentation ultimately redefined his artistic legacy and transformed the course of modern Egyptian art.

This painting belongs to that pivotal early abstract period, marking the beginning of Taher’s departure from realism toward a more expressive visual language. Sweeping brushstrokes, layered textures, and fluid forms create a powerful sense of movement and depth, while the interplay of deep green, black, and earthy red tones evokes both energy and contemplation. Rather than depicting the visible world, Taher invites the viewer to experience rhythm, emotion, and the spiritual possibilities of color.

Seif Wanly (1906–1979) stands among the most influential figures in modern Egyptian art and was a defining member of the Alexandria School. Celebrated for his vibrant palette, expressive brushwork, and dynamic compositions, he found inspiration in the rhythm of everyday life, depicting ballet dancers, circus performers, musicians, landscapes, and coastal scenes with remarkable energy. Blending European modernist influences with a distinctly Egyptian sensibility, Wanly developed a unique artistic language that continues to shape the legacy of modern Egyptian art.

In this striking gouache work, Wanly portrays a theatrical figure dressed in a vivid red costume set against a deep black background, creating a dramatic sense of contrast and presence. Executed with his characteristic expressive brushwork and bold use of color, the composition evokes the energy of the stage while capturing the individuality of the character. Wanly gathers inspiration from his fascination with Greek Mythology, in this painting, we see the God of War, Ares.
