Former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola and current Hansi Flick shared differing views after Lamine Yamal sparked major online debate by waving a Palestinian flag during FC Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations following the club’s victory over Real Madrid.
Photos and videos from Barcelona’s parade quickly went viral across social media, with one Instagram post generating millions of interactions and reigniting conversations about political expression in football.
Guardiola publicly defended the young star, saying: “Lamine should be proud of what he did.” He also stressed that footballers are influential role models with powerful public platforms and should speak out when they feel it is necessary.
Flick, however, took a more cautious stance. While he said he does not support mixing politics with football, he acknowledged that Yamal was “old enough” to make his own decisions.
