Obituary: Rare Studios artist Brett Jones has passed away

Brett Jones, a former artist at Rare Studios who worked on GoldenEye and the original Perfect Dark, has died.
The news was revealed on social media via Perfect Dark designer David Doak. He called Jones "an absolute legend. [...] So much of what made GE007 and PD special came from Brett's talent and rascal humor."
Jones joined Rare in 1994 as a lead artist and animator. For Perfect Dark, he played a key role in designing series lead Joanna Dark, along with the motion capture and modeling for the game's characters.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor double jumps to last-gen in September

Over a full year ago, EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was making its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Now, the publisher has announced the game is arriving on last-gen on September 17 for $50.
The game originally launched on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S in April 2023. At the time of its last-gen announcement, Wilson suggested the move would benefit both the game and Star Wars as a video game property.
"I would love to see more in the Jedi franchise over time," he said last year. "It's one of the great beats in the Star Wars Galaxy this year. [...] As we bring it to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we think there'll be another little bump there for the franchise."

Vampire Survivors development sounds like an open source-fueled fever dream

The last print issue of Game Informer shipped with a fantastic interview with Vampire Survivors creator Luca Galante, and boy is it a doozy. Galante's given plenty of interviews in the past about his surprise hit game that birthed a sea of "survivor" games, but his chat with Game Informer tells us a little more about the tools and techniques that brought the game to life.
Speaking with Pao Yumol, Galante retold some familiar tales from development—that his gambling app programming background didn't really influence the whole game's design, just the treasure chest openings, and that he he was first inspired by LEME's mobile game Magic Survival—but there are a few new tidbits that tell us how making the game was possible.

Square Enix eyes bigger Xbox focus after 'pretty good' Final Fantasy XIV response

The response to Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox is apparently strong enough that Square Enix is considering a more balanced multiplatform approach.
Speaking with Eurogamer, producer Naoki Yoshida said the MMO's arrival on Xbox Series X|S in March had a "pretty good" reaction. With communities growing on the platform, the publisher is looking to "further deepen" its relationship with Xbox.
"Now we are moving towards the policy of releasing our games on a multiplatform basis," said Yoshida. "We want to release more Square Enix games on Xbox, and there will be more of our titles released on Xbox. I hope players will look forward to future things to come on the platform."

IBM wins $44.9 million patent infringement suit against Zynga

Reuters reports tech company IBM won its lawsuit against mobile developer Zynga, which it sued over patent infringement in 2022.
Two years ago, IBM claimed the Farmville creator was misusing its "foundational" web technology, including data capture and analytics. The two companies had reportedly been negotiating a license since 2014, but those talks repeatedly fell through.
