Après '14, l’équipe TCD entame un nouveau projet nommé 'EL MEDREB'. EL MEDREB
Une expression de l’argot algérien utilisée, selon le contexte, pour définir à la fois un lieu indéterminé et très précis. Ce projet sera présenté sous forme d’une recherche autour des bâtiments abandonnés à Alger, plus précisément dans la
région d’El Hamma en étudiant son contexte social, architectural et historique. Ce quartier, situé du côté nord-est de la ville, comporte un tissu urbain complexe et un lieu où se concentrent des bâtiments abandonnés, particulièrement des hangars. Outre son cachet industriel, un large éventail de populations et de récits urbains s’y brassent, d’où le fait d’avoir porté le choix d’effectuer notre recherche sur ce site, et ce afin de comprendre sa mutation et repenser de manière critique les différents processus qu'il a traversé au cours du temps. En parallèle de cet aspect de la recherche, une autre partie portera sur la préservation de la mémoire collective, avec l'implication directe des habitants d’El Hamma. En abordant ces différentes configurations (architecturales, historiques, socio-culturelles), nous souhaiterions ré-imaginer ces espaces abandonnés comme des espaces communs pour les rencontres sociales et culturelles de la communauté, gérés par et pour ses habitants de manière durable.

After '14 the TCD team starts a new project named 'EL MEDREB'. EL MEDREB
An Algerian slang expression used, depending on the context, to define both an unknown location and a very precise one. This project will be presented as a research around abandoned buildings in Algiers, specifically in the district of El Hamma by looking at its social, architectural and historical context. This area, located in the northeast side of the city, has a complex urban fabric and it is one of the largest centers where abandoned buildings are concentrated, particularly factories and warehouses. Besides its industrial character, a wide range of populations and urban stories are brewed there. For these reasons we have chosen to conduct our research on this site, in order to understand its mutation and rethink critically the different processes it has passed through over time. In parallel to this aspect of the research, another part will focus on preserving the collective memory, with the direct involvement of the inhabitants of El Hamma. By tackling these different configurations (architectural, historical, socio-cultural), we want to re-imagine these abandoned spaces as common areas for social and cultural gatherings in the community, managed by and for its people in a sustainable way.
