i am elated to be the newest Curatorial Assistant at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. this dual appointment in the curatorial + executive administrative departments will be an ideal springboard into what i spent my undergraduate career preparing for: a lifetime of public intellectualism as an art historian + museum professional.

Crystal Bridges has endeavored on individual + institutional levels to expose as many people to unique artworks as possible and i am honored to join in this dynamic, urgent effort. i find that even the Museum’s physical location in Northwest Arkansas helps the notion that some communities deserve better access to great art than others.

i am indebted to my Spelman sisters and who see making the path clearer for bright, eager novices like myself equal in priority to their personal accomplishments. i’m grateful to have become rooted in my commitment to this field instead of a more convenient but unrelated avenue post-graduation, and excited to learn what the work will require of me + teach me in the same breath. holy God to whom all praise is due, i stand in awe of You 💫🦋❤️

i was thrilled when Mary Schmidt Campbell became the 10th President of Spelman College during my sophomore year. though it was before her physical arrival, i felt like i knew so much about her esteemed life as an art historian, museum professional, and general advocate of all things culturally excellent.

now 3 years since, i’m in awe of every word Dr. Campbell gave us during her Getty lecture about her new book “An American Odyssey: The Life and Works of Romare Bearden.” it’s no less than a miracle for to be among the newer manifestation of Black women in the arts, the pipeline of which Dr. Campbell leads Spelman in leading, nurturing, and transforming. 💙💫 @ The J. days after its debut, i’m still reeling about the new Amy Sherald exhibition on view this semester at , and comforted in know how Spelman continues to bring the best + brightest to campus. 💙

i’ve garnered a special interest in growing my personal finance knowledge at the halfway mark in my gap year. i feel so fortunate to have come across ’s “Broke Millennial” and learned about choosing the best bank possible.

Lowry explains in funny, palatable language why you should never be paying maintenance, low-balance, lost card fees, etc., and how large commercial banks rely on them to support the upkeep of their physical branches. she also shares the importance of a savings account with a higher APY, meaning more interest accrued on the money that’s being put away. i’ve since switched to Ally—which is an online bank that still has a strong ATM network + a partnership with Zelle—and have felt better and better about it with each day, knowing that undoing the negative perception of money i’ve inherited required intense research + diligence. fear of not having enough money can cripple you and trick you into thinking you have few options to maintain (and maximize) what’s already yours.

though the success of capitalism is built on the subjugation of working class Black folks, it feels a little better knowing that i can actually account for each dollar and not have it supporting a massive commercial bank. thanks, 💸
