Friday printmaking at AAKA — a great place to explore techniques, exchange ideas and learn together.

Today we explored White Ground on aquatinted copper plates. I worked on two plates, building up the ground in different thicknesses. On this one, I applied some particularly thick layers to create very light areas, along with a few scratched lines.

Next step: etching!

This Chine collé print are part of my Herbarium project, developed from botanical imagery associated with Linné.

A thin sheet of paper is placed with the inked copper plate and bonded to the support sheet in the press. The added paper becomes part of the image, creating a distinct surface alongside the etched lines.

This closing carousel brings together seven images from my Scandia study copper plate: a black proof, a blue-black viscosity print, a black à la poupée print with red and a barely visible touch of gold, a dark blue chine collé, and a Raw Umber viscosity print. The final images show the copper plate and the black proof with its paper edge visible.

The prints were made with Charbonnel encre taille douce on Fabriano Unica, 250 gsm. The etched image stays the same throughout; the inking and chine collé shift its colour and emphasis.

Cutting copper for a new etching project.
Today at the printmaking workshop at Aarhus Art Academy, I used this big, old guillotine. One cut, and the plate is ready for the next step.

This chine collé print was made from the small Scandia plate. A wide strip of blue paper is bonded to the sheet during printing, creating a solid band of colour across the etched image.

Endnu et tryk fra Herbarium-serien. Sort dybtryksfarve kombineret med en meget lys, støvet rosa farve påført med valse. De ætsede linjer og toner bevares under den rosa overfladefarve.

Herbarium began with Lena Granefelt’s photographs of Linné’s herbarium, introduced during a printmaking course at Aarhus Art Academy.

Inspirationen opstod på Fredagsgrafik på Aarhus Kunstakademi, hvor vi blev præsenteret for Lena Granefelts fotografier af Linnés herbarium. Det blev udgangspunktet for mine tre kobbertryk med mørke toner og bevidst slidte overflader.
