Spaceforvisualresearch

Spaceforvisualresearch The Space for Visual Research was established at the Bauhaus-University Weimar

»Space for Visual Research (SfVR)« is a platform for experimental image production. Established as an extracurricular laboratory at the Bauhaus University Weimar back in 2013, it encourages graphic designers to explore alternative modes of making and expand their creative repertoire. Published by Spector Books, the research lab’s eponymous logbook »Space for Visual Research Vol. 2« launches in Nov

ember 2017. An extended version of its predecessor, it combines a new selection of science-inspired visual experiments with a comprehensive series of conversations, essays, and artist contributions. http://www.spaceforvisualresearch.com

🤓📕 The unwavering appeal of gold goes back to the beginning of time. Since then, the golden surface reflects prosperity, and a range of other, desirable properties. Last but not least, it reflects light. The shine of gold resembles that of the sun, which is why humans have long turned to it in their battle with darkness. In this project, the highly reflective golden surface is not, as usual, used to illuminate a scene, but becomes itself the means of photographic exposure. Redirecting the available light onto color negative paper it generates a series of images reminiscent of snow-covered mountain tops (German: Gipfel).

Sascha Krischock: Natives (2015), virtual environment

An idiosyncratic study in data visualization and information design, this project explores mankind’s millennia-old fascination
with alternative worlds. While Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s
“homme sauvage” chose to live the life of a hermit–uncorrupted
by civilization, and in perfect harmony with his natural
habitat–today’s digital natives firmly immerse themselves in
artificial environments. Clicking and swiping their way through
the web and all sorts of software applications, they leave
behind an abundance of traces. On the search for new ways
of mapping and delivering data, the experiment translates
previously recorded user behaviors into 3D scripts to be
visualized and eventually experienced with the virtual reality
system Oculus Rift.

Moritz Wehrmann

We are happy that Moritz Wehrmann will be with us tonight at the Space for Visual Research Vol. 2. Book Launch.

He contributed work from his »FLOU« and »AMAZONE« series: Diverting an image processing algorithm from its intended purpose, the projects seeks to probe and explore the cognitive processes involved in the processing of visual information, paying particular attention to the efficiency of mechanisms that allow us to recognize, faces, objects and shapes.

We are super proud that a project by Mathias Schmitt and Miguelito El Gaucho (Michael Ott), co-founders of the Space for Visual Research, is part of the second volume of our workshop manual again.

This time it's a new work series called »Layers«.

Check them out: http://www.schmott.co

Together with Markus Weisbeck we founded the Spaceforvisualresearch in 2011 and published the first results in a book in 2014 Spector Books during our time as academic researchers at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. We are very happy that this project is still going on and our work „layers“ can be seen in the second edition. It will be released tomorrow at Pro qm in Berlin.

MARKUS WEISBECK

Markus Weisbeck (* 1965) is considered to be one of the most influential graphic designers in the German-speaking world and is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). At Bauhaus University Weimar, he has set up his own study space, the Space for Visual Research. His abstract works, mostly photographs derived from experimentation, are less of a reference to modernity than to their teaching methods.

Meet him at Kai Middendorff Galerie in Frankfurt next week.
