Seamonsters in the North Sea!

A rare and very decorative map of East Frisia (Ostfriesland) by Ubbo
Emmius. This is the forth state of the map, now by Pieter van den Keere, who acquired the plate and cut it at the bottom and left and replaced the two text cartouches with a figural cartouche since it was too big for inclusion in his famous Atlas Germania inferior.

Rare Ortelius map WITHOUT text on verso.

Anyone could buy at any time a print made by a copperplate belonging to Ortelius' atlas maps in the printing shop of Ortelius. Such a print would not have any text, because it would be a waste of time and energy to typeset a complete text for printing it once. A plate was easily printed for just one copy.

This beautiful map of the Wandering of Abraham is an example of such a map, not printed for bound it into an atlas. Also it is still a black and white version with a strong impression, which is a rarity these days, especially for this Ortelius map. The full extend of the engraving skills can be seen without colour.

I just added around 100 new old maps to my website. Among them a Spanish rarity, Medina's very rare map of America and the Atlantic from the 1st edition of "Arte de Navegar" printed in 1545. Or the mysterious final Blaeu world map in polar projection, never published by him because of the great fire in Blaeu's workshop. Also worth mentioning is a beautiful example of de Bry's map of America.

I just found almost identical ships on De Jode and Ortelius maps. Engraved by the Dutch master engraver Joannes van Deutecum. He is also well known for his etchings after genre scenes by Pieter Bruegel and Hieronymus Bosch.

Beautiful old colored example of Homann's first map of America. The northern west coast is labeled "Costa Terrae Borealis incognitae". Title cartouche with native Americans. This is the 3rd state with California already correctly represented as a peninsula.

Not a map today, but related to a cartographer family: Maria Sibylla Merian's most beautiful and the first engraving in 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium'.

M.S. Merian was the daughter of the famous Matthäus Merian who married into the De Bry publishing house in Frankfurt.

Small but valuable: One of the earliest obtainable map of the American continent. Bordone's map with the name "Terra de lavoratore" was first printed in 1528 and published in his Isolario.

The Discovery of the Bass-Strait between Australia and Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land).
Named after George Bass who passed through it while circumnavigating Tasmania together with the English navigator and cartographer Matthew Flinders in 1799. The sea chart shows the new discoveries and surveys made by George Bass in a whaleboat.

One of the most detailed plans of London of the early 18th century. Published by Homann Heires in 1736. With the large illustrations of St. James's Square, the Custom House, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Royal Exchange to the right. The total image size is 51 x 168 cm, printed from 3 plates.

One of the earliest printed maps of the Upper-Rhine (Oberrhein) in Southwest Germany. It first appeared in Martin Waldseemüller's important edition of Ptolemy's Geographia in 1513. Waldseemüller, responsible for naming the new developed continent "America" lived and worked in the area and was born in Wolfenweiler close to Freiburg. He almost certainly performed the surveys for this map by himself.

One of the most beautiful colonial maps of the United States.

This maps is well known because of the famous inset view of New Amsterdam, today New York City. The prospect is one of the earliest engravings of New York and is based most properly on a watercolor, which is owned by Vienna's Albertina Museum. The view was first published by Johannes Blaeu in 1650.
