It is always fascinating to me what variety of color shades and textures can be discovered in a very normal little piece of nature.

2022.02 Oil painting, Alex on the road in Malaga, 60 x 80 cm, 2021

I was inspired to paint this painting by a photo that was recently taken in Malaga.

At first glance, the scene looks completely unspectacular, but on closer inspection it reveals a whole range of exciting contrasts that combine to form a multi-layered, harmonious overall picture.

The foreground, which occupies more than half the picture area, is dominated by countless shades of gray.

In the middle of the picture, the gas station and several traffic signs set small, strong color accents in red, blue and yellow.

The sky is bright blue with beautiful clouds in different shapes.

The landscape on the horizon appears in natural, muted brown and gray tones.

The massive, geometric components of the gas station architecture on the one hand and the light, playful appearance of the trees and bushes on the horizon on the other hand enhance each other's effect.

The entire scene in the foreground is almost deserted. The lonely pedestrian forms a lively counterpart to asphalt and concrete and invites you to immerse yourself in the picture.

She's not really alone either. The photographer with the smartphone camera in his hands stands behind her. The shadow at the bottom right edge of the picture gives an idea of his presence.

It was very important for me to capture the contrasts and the resulting overall harmony in painting and to make them visible in the painting, so that the viewer gets the desire to get involved in this seemingly unspectacular moment and feels joy in it.

The turbot tasted delicious.
He is eaten.
No more traces on the stove and pan.
Fortunately, I had time to paint this unusual fish before preparation.
A beautiful, vivid memory.

This is actually a quite everyday view from my living room window outside.
But the effect of light and weather at the moment when I painted this oil painting from my living room window makes the view a very special experience.

The oil painting "Ochsengrill" (95 x 90 cm, oil on nettle, 1984) comes from my creative phase in the 80s, when I was intensively engaged in dense, multi - figure compositions in an expressive paiting style.

At the “GrowUp! Intercultural Garden Augsburg eV ” there was a beautiful graffiti in the Reesepark Augsburg. The graffiti had been painted on the back of the "Reesetheatre".

The Reese theater, which was part of the historic military building complex on the grounds of the Reese barracks in Augsburg, was demolished in 2020.

I am very happy that I still photographed the graffito in its surroundings before the Reese theater was demolished and that I was now able to memorialize it with this realistic oil painting.

The graffiti is the focus of my painting. It shares so much spontaneity, creativity and enjoyment of life that you don't have the feeling of being in a former barracks area.

The creatively designed plant of the GrowUp garden in front of the graffiti reinforces this impression.

The barracks in the background of my painting are largely covered by the graffito, the facade of the Reese theatre and by large, old trees.

The presence of the dog digging in the ground and the photographer make the moment immediately tangible and alive.

An exhibition of works by the American artist Alex Katz in the Brandhorst Museum in Munich inspired me to create this oil painting.

What I find particularly exciting about this painting is the spatial situation that the viewer finds, which is not easy to understand, and the togetherness of exhibits and exhibition visitors.

The first thing that catches the eye is three people in the foreground, who are optically grouped together by a square, light-colored surface, but between whom there seems to be no connection whatsoever.

In fact, the two men are an exhibit, a so-called "cut out" (the work of art is sawn out of an aluminum plate that is painted on both sides) and the woman is an exhibition visitor who is looking at the cut out from behind.

The cut out and the exhibition visitor stand in front of a partition.

In the right-hand third of the painting, this partition reveals another exhibition room in which, at first glance, it appears that a group of six people are engaged in lively conversation.

A closer look reveals that there is another exhibit in the exhibition room, on which three people can be identified and which is being observed attentively by three visitors.

This oil painting from 2010 shows a view out of the window into my snowy garden.

It's a very peaceful, quiet moment.

The sun falling on the thick, loose layer of snow creates a wonderfully lively play of light and shadow.

Oil painting, Alex at the Center Pompidou in Malaga, 80 x 60 cm, 2021

It was again a photo from Spain that inspired me to paint a picture.

“El Cubo” the huge cube made of steel and glass in front of which my daughter-in-law stands dominates the scene. It is used by the Center Pompidou in Malaga at the port as a light source for the underground exhibition rooms and of course as an “eye catcher” for passers-by in the city.

I was fascinated by the interplay of the red, yellow, blue, green and uncolored glass panes of the cube with its surroundings in the photo.

I find the red pane of glass in front of my daughter-in-law especially exciting. Here two objects in the picture meet in the same shade of red, which only stand out from each other through their materiality:

The glass pane is transparent and reflective, the sweater is not.

On the floor in front of the facade, only the red of the glass and the shadow of Alex's black pants can be seen.

The red of the reflective glass can also be found inside the cube. Finally, the view of the harbor, which you can see through the cube in the background, is bathed in red light through this pane of glass.

Similar to this red glass pane, other parts of the area around the cube are highlighted by the colorful and uncolored glass panes, such as the palm tree in the middle, on the left of the picture.

The painterly implementation of this picture was a special challenge for me, especially due to the numerous mutually influencing reflections, the transparency of the glass panes and the many complicated perspectives.
