Traditionally, Russian icons are painted with egg tempera but are you familiar with distemper paint? It's the form of tempera paint typically used in the painting of Ethiopian icons like the icon shown here, "Mother of God," circa 18th century on view in our special exhibition.

Based on animal-skin glue, rather than egg yolk, distemper can be used on un-gessoed surfaces. In Ethiopian art it's commonly used to paint icons, diptychs, triptychs, and wooden or metal crosses. To learn more about this medium and how to make it visit http://goo.gl/0h8VfZ.
