You are warmly invited to the last event of “ Leviathan: A Capitalocene Beastiarium” on July 23rd, at 6 pm (CET). We invited Dr. Olga Smith (University of Vienna) (@olga_A_smith) to present “Sublime in the Anthropocene”. The YouTube link is in the bio! (https://youtu.be/8bNGC3I_Hh0) The exhibition and public program of the exhibition is kindly supported by NEUSTART KULTUR and Fachbereich Kultur von Neukölln. “Sublime in the Anthropocene” - "Presentation Abstract: In Hobbes’s political analogy, Leviathan overcomes the wolf-man, who symbolically represents the untamed state of nature. This lecture proposes to re-examine the hierarchical relationship established in this parable, by taking account of the epistemological challenges to the notion of nature and humankind posed by the emergence of the concept of Anthropocene. I propose to do this through the aesthetic category of sublime to designate a human-nature relationship predicated on renewed appreciation of nature as uncontrollable and potentially dangerous power." Dr. Olga Smith (University of Vienna)’s interest in the Anthropocene is driven by her research in the field of art history, which focuses on ‘landscape’ as a form of picturing nature. This research project is currently being developed at the University of Vienna with the support of a Marie Curie fellowship. Dr. Smith have previously held research posts at the Humboldt University of Berlin and University of Warwick, as well as Tate Gallery London. She has published on contemporary art and photography, including, as editor, Photography and Landscape (Photographies, 2019) and Anamnesia: Private and Public Memory in Modern French Culture (Peter Lang, 2009).

Check out our collective members, CommonsLab: Nachbarschaftslabor's zine publication.

We are happy to share our first Common(s)Lab publication with you: a zine documenting the last three years of (un)learning.

The zine outlines the various formats and methods that were adopted over the past three years and brings together an array of resources and instructions — which emerged and evolved thanks to the many people who have become part of the project — that might serve as an inspiration and resource for similar projects or activities wherever you are.

It was published online in February 2021, through Agents of Alternatives e.V. and kindly supported by >top e.V.

Scarecrow is a solo exhibition by Korhan Erel. The project is visible online. (Links in bio👆)

The last event of Scarecrow is an online round table meeting on November 15th at 3 pm, together with guests, Agata Lisiak, professor of migration studies at Bard College Berlin and Susanna Schoenberg, an artist and lecturer, focusing on the politics of border in her practice, to lead a get together with the active participation of pre-registered participants on the last day of the exhibition. This event aims to provide a platform for sharing experience and observation within a non-institutional and non-academic environment about sonic experiences and politics of border. Register via email ([email protected]).

A scarecrow is a humanoid object that is placed in open fields to scare off birds or other animals to protect seeds and crops. It is a mute object, which stands alone in the middle of a field, to protect the land and crops. The project appropriates and reverses the mute scarecrow object into a sound sculpture, which speculates their presence in the borders of countries or private lands to question two main themes: neglecting of nature and non-human beings as well as centralizing human presence over nature; and migration politics and their unwelcoming strategies.

Erel’s sound installation explores ‘the fear from the other’, both human and non-human, using sound emanating from an amorphic, absurd sound-sculpture built using ready-made objects that one can easily procure. This speculative approach is a critique of both conventional methods of scaring animals, positioning humankind over nature and hate speech toward migrants and the other. The three-channel sound composition is based on field recordings, designed sounds and an unknown language consisting of made-up words and remixed languages, the latter primarily to amplify the sense of being un/welcome and to put the visitor in a position of unwantedness and otherness.

If you think you can grasp me, think again is an exhibition by artist Diana Barquero Pérez that deals with the ongoing transformation of a specific region in Southern Costa Rica: Térraba Sierpe. Recognized as a Ramsar site and protected area of great environmental importance since 1995, this wetland plays a major role in carbon sequestration within our collapsing world of climate crisis. The exhibition, as the title suggests, aims to visualize the human pursuit of grasping and conceiving the land and its resources through a purely extractive lens without considering the ensuing complexity of its social and environmental consequences. Through the installation of several conglomerates where different materials from the area are fixed together, the artist creates a durational, process-based installation, in which conglomerates and water react and transform, altering their materiality and dispersing it through the space. However, Térraba Sierpe is being pressured, shrunk, and transformed by multiple external forces. Banana, palm oil, rice, and pineapple plantations that grow in the wetland’s borders are evidence of an expanding agricultural sector, which is filling land and water with pesticides, fertilizers, and polluted sediments in order to satisfy European and North American demands for these products. This utilization of the land unveils the prevailing capitalist logic in food production systems, which rely on the ‘sacrifice’ of preserved areas, -previously non-agricultural field- to appease the whims of international markets that are geared towards furthering the enrichment of transnational agribusiness.

space.dot.com is a new collaborative project by Sharon Paz and Mikala Hyldig Dal, including a 360° video and augmented reality (AR) environment to be experienced from your mobile device in the comfort of your own space. The project is curated by Tuce Erel at top Transdisciplinary Project Space on behalf of the 48 Hours Neukölln Festival, from June 19th to 21st.

The work addresses conceptions of ownership in urban space, referencing the political context of gentrification on a local and global scale including the topic of space, ownership, and exploitation/solidarity towards interstellar colonialism, dark matter, and black holes. space.dot.com introduces a speculative narrative of space colonization to reflect on worldwide processes of wealth generation, accessing natural sources, hegemonic politics over the female body as well as unjust housing policies that push out of tenants to peripheral areas of the city or into homelessness.

Artists explore the possibility of rethinking about redistribution policies and profoundly restructuring power relations. Both the 360° video and the augmented reality environment consist of five chapters that create a fusion between performance, real space, and virtual elements. Avatars embody “the politics of space” in a form of absurd play on inner and outer space as ultimate philosophical categories.

space.dot.com integrates the altered living conditions during Covid-19 such as how our bodies are defined in relation to shrinking spaces and how social isolation is expanding. The site-specific window installation will be accessible for people who are passing by >top, located in Schillerpromenade 4. AR and 360° videos can be accessed from anywhere.

-English version-

Dear artists and friends of Axel Daniel Reinert,

In memory of our friend, colleague and networker Axel, with whom we have worked in the Schillerpalais for the past few years, we are organizing an action weekend. Under the title „Homage to Axel“ we organize an exhibition, a talk & soup evening and a procession to the cemetery where we inaugurate Axel‘s tombstone with our works of art.

We call you to create miniature works that connect you with Axel. We then want all submissions to communicate with each other through light sources and various light projections and create a great whole work of art that changes throughout the evening. To do this, we will illuminate the miniatures with various light sources and thereby create a play of light and shadow on the walls. Your sculptures can therefore play with shadows and transparency and, after consultation with us, can also include a slide or video projection.

Following governmental advice of social distancing, we will try to get together online for our next reading group. Commoning in corona times! :)

We will meet in an online conference room (please find the link below). This format also allows for people not living in Berlin to join! So feel free to spread the word.. :)

We will read a text on the relationship between commons and neoliberalism by Max Haiven, a Canadian author, activist and academic, who writes about art, culture, value, and the commons. Find more info here: maxhaiven.wordpress.com We will share the text when we meet online and read it out loud together, so no need to prepare.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer you wine and snacks, but feel free to bring your own to the screen.

Top - a community space for you

We develop ideas being in the air, often merging politics, economics and technologies. Beside other contexts we work in postdigital domain – art forms that address the humanization of digital technologies through interplay between digital, biological and cultural. We support collaborative projects that seek for a dialog and diversity in artistic forms and attitudes. In such a way we contribute our society.
