In 1964 Zdzisław Jurkiewicz moved to a small flat in Łaciarska Street in Wrocław, which would become the figure connecting the various aspects of his artistic work, and more – a point of intersection of all the numerous matters and issues that he found interesting. It was there that all the works featured at the exhibition at Wrocław Contemporary Museum were created: objects, paintings, photographs, but the role and function of the flat far exceeded the traditionally understood art studio; it was not about genius loci either. In the 1970s, the flat became a kind of lab-capsule and a botanical garden in one. Jurkiewicz conducted astronomical observations from the window of his room. At the same time, he set a kind of “trap” for the Sun in his kitchen and created a photographic record of it. This is how the work The Sun 1.VII.1972 (1972) was made – a sequence of black-and-white photographs shows the solar disk moving across the kitchen wall amidst ordinary objects, dishes, chives in a jar. It is one of Jurkiewicz’s seminal works and a key element of the exhibition, which perfectly illustrates his ability to combine what is distant and unattainable with that which is close, mundane, ordinary.

The group exhibition Like Water explores the complex relationship between rage and femininity from diverse angles and through different artistic media, explicitly taking femininities outside of a binary gender system into account as well.
Anger is a multi-layered emotion. It can be destructive and transformative, rational and impulsive, empathetic and isolating. In its ability to point the finger at injustice and reinforce boundaries, it’s one of the most powerful emotional tools we have.
Like Water lets various artists take a stand on the topic. Sometimes serious, sometimes playful, painting, ceramics, video, installation and live performances serve as a means to illuminate female rage and its underlying structures, histories, aesthetics and potentials. The works on view invite visitors to engage with the questions raised and their own emotions.
Like Water is funded by Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn as well as Bezirksamt Neukölln – Fachbereich Kultur and is also realized with the support of Stiftung wissensART, Berlin.

Krit-Kölln Online, Zeitraum für Zweifel
Group exhibition
Exhibition on view: 03.04.22 – 09.04.22
Visiting hours: 17:00 – 20:00
Soft Opening: 03.04.22, Sunday, 17:00
Zeitraum für Zweifel is the conclusion of Krit-Kölln Online, a two-month program where they regularly met to analyze their artistic practice.
During their sessions, different Berlin-based artists joined them as guests. Andres Villarreal, Ana María Millan, Ellinor Aurora Aasgaard, Mario Asef and Sofía Lomba thought together with them and also, shared their experience in relation to their own work and their previous involvement in different academic programs and participation in residencies etc.
The title of the show translates into English as period for doubts but also, in a literal way, as time-room for doubts. Doubting is often considered a sign of weakness or lack of conviction, instead, in their time-room, asking questions was the method they used to deconstruct both the presented artworks and their means of production.
The exhibited works which deal with issues of loneliness, care, urbanism and expanded notions of the traditional art mediums, were the main protagonists of their sessions. However, they were also an excuse to bond and connect with other artists unknown to them until that moment.
Besides their steady gatherings and exhibition, the program also aimed to encourage what cannot be planned nor organized in a framed period of time and space, such as future collaborations and projects among its participants, hoping for contingency to lead the way for what is yet to come.

*** Part of transmediale / Vorspiel 2022 ***
Most of the world human population lives in cities nowadays; they are mostly online but sometimes offline. Cities are considered commodities; they are contemporary tools for consumption. The city is consumed and experienced as entertainment by those who can afford it; space becomes the privileged instrument for capital to unfold, to happen through the social realm. With the help of emerging technologies, concepts of smart cities, cities have become more digital. But in the digitalized city, also citizens are commodified, becoming, in turn, the “privileged instrument” of capital by using “smart” tools’ and allowing data extraction.
Urban Surveillance Bureau is initiated by Yelta Köm and mimics bureaucratic gestures to offer dissident urban imaginaries and progressive articulations beyond conventional critics. Urban Surveillance Bureau is tasked with establishing fictional realities through surveillance systems and providing information on how it is possible to hide within the system and empower dissident movements.
Throughout the transmediale Vorspiel, the Bureau will show a sequence from its work in process, with drawings, speculations, videos and objects at This installation will provide the groundwork for assemblages and discussions for the bureau’s practice. Urban Surveillance Bureau was partially developed during the Forecast Platform Mentorship Programme in 2020.

We would like to inform you that this year TOP participates in Vorspiel / transmediale: an installation and participatory event "You and I, You and Me" by Mindaugas Gapševičius and Maria Safronova Wahlström.
Participatory event on 21 January 2022 Friday, 17:00 – 21:00
Location: Atelier, Silent Green, Gerichtstraße 35, 13347 Berlin
Mindaugas Gapševičius invites to take part in a participatory event “You and I, You and Me”. The installation and the participatory event explore the possibilities of communication through electricity. The project proposes that electricity could help to reveal the imperceptible connections between different actors within the environment. How far could electricity help in understanding the other? Is there a possibility to alter human senses by electric impulses?
The participatory event will take us to the future scenario, where humans, computing machines, and various hybrids share the space they inhabit. In this environment senses are altered, and some have inextricable linkage to computing devices. In this narrative, humans take responsibility to reshape social ties to avoid being controlled by corporations and machines.

You are warmly invited to join
"Signs of the Times – collecting material traces and memories" by Karolina Żyniewicz, a bio-sociological experiment and a participatory event at Top on 13.11 from 4pm to 6:30pm.
Masks (medical/textile) became symbols of these challenging times, confinement, uncertainty, and fear. Pictures of people wearing masks will be historical documents of this period. With time, they will have different meanings. Masks are dedicated to protecting us from the virus but are used for too long; they can also be dangerous for our health, accumulating everything coming from our nose and mouth while breathing and talking. After a few hours of wearing, they are soaked with body secretions and individual micro-flora. We should not absorb it back.
Besides pictures of masks being worn, they are also masks lying in the streets. After usage, they become trash, biohazardous trash. They are then anonymous; we can’t know who was wearing them. Maybe it was a coronavirus carrier or a person being sick with various illnesses. In Spring 2021, I decided to collect masks from the streets of Berlin to use them as laboratory samples in the future. Then I realized that I wanted to listen to people and collect their masks and memories from the covid 19 pandemic. The pandemic is not over yet, and the presentation of the project required of it is definitely ended. The laboratory stage of the project is planned for 2/3 years from now. Hopefully, it will be enough time to see the collections from a different perspective.
This is a 2G event – Covid-19 vaccination or recovery proof will be checked at the entrance.
The space is limited to 12 people. Please do register via email: top [at] top-ev [dot] de. By registering, you agree to be part of the project. But your participation can be off-the-record. The consent documents will be provided on-site.

You are warmly invited to the last event of “ Leviathan: A Capitalocene Beastiarium” on July 23rd, at 6 pm (CET). We invited Dr. Olga Smith (University of Vienna) () to present “Sublime in the Anthropocene”. The YouTube link is in the bio! (https://youtu.be/8bNGC3I_Hh0) The exhibition and public program of the exhibition is kindly supported by NEUSTART KULTUR and Fachbereich Kultur von Neukölln. “Sublime in the Anthropocene” - "Presentation Abstract: In Hobbes’s political analogy, Leviathan overcomes the wolf-man, who symbolically represents the untamed state of nature. This lecture proposes to re-examine the hierarchical relationship established in this parable, by taking account of the epistemological challenges to the notion of nature and humankind posed by the emergence of the concept of Anthropocene. I propose to do this through the aesthetic category of sublime to designate a human-nature relationship predicated on renewed appreciation of nature as uncontrollable and potentially dangerous power." Dr. Olga Smith (University of Vienna)’s interest in the Anthropocene is driven by her research in the field of art history, which focuses on ‘landscape’ as a form of picturing nature. This research project is currently being developed at the University of Vienna with the support of a Marie Curie fellowship. Dr. Smith have previously held research posts at the Humboldt University of Berlin and University of Warwick, as well as Tate Gallery London. She has published on contemporary art and photography, including, as editor, Photography and Landscape (Photographies, 2019) and Anamnesia: Private and Public Memory in Modern French Culture (Peter Lang, 2009).

Scarecrow is a solo exhibition by Korhan Erel. The project is visible online. (Links in bio👆)
The last event of Scarecrow is an online round table meeting on November 15th at 3 pm, together with guests, Agata Lisiak, professor of migration studies at Bard College Berlin and Susanna Schoenberg, an artist and lecturer, focusing on the politics of border in her practice, to lead a get together with the active participation of pre-registered participants on the last day of the exhibition. This event aims to provide a platform for sharing experience and observation within a non-institutional and non-academic environment about sonic experiences and politics of border. Register via email ([email protected]).
A scarecrow is a humanoid object that is placed in open fields to scare off birds or other animals to protect seeds and crops. It is a mute object, which stands alone in the middle of a field, to protect the land and crops. The project appropriates and reverses the mute scarecrow object into a sound sculpture, which speculates their presence in the borders of countries or private lands to question two main themes: neglecting of nature and non-human beings as well as centralizing human presence over nature; and migration politics and their unwelcoming strategies.
Erel’s sound installation explores ‘the fear from the other’, both human and non-human, using sound emanating from an amorphic, absurd sound-sculpture built using ready-made objects that one can easily procure. This speculative approach is a critique of both conventional methods of scaring animals, positioning humankind over nature and hate speech toward migrants and the other. The three-channel sound composition is based on field recordings, designed sounds and an unknown language consisting of made-up words and remixed languages, the latter primarily to amplify the sense of being un/welcome and to put the visitor in a position of unwantedness and otherness.

Artist-Run Resource Center (ARRC) is for knowledge sharing between colleagues. It is a platform with resources for those who wants to start up a platform, or maybe for those who seek information on specific problems typical for the sector, or it could be a knowledge base for those researching the field.
So, if you have articles, interviews, research or other relevant material, ARRC is the place to share your material generously with others within the artist-run sector.
