The Shippō Tsunagi pattern is one of the oldest motifs in Sashiko embroidery.
Its name translates as “The Seven Treasured Jewels of the Buddha” and refers to precious gifts such as gold, silver, lapis lazuli and pearls.

The geometric structure embodies the idea of perfect balance: each line is of equal importance and contributes to the whole. It is a symbol of happiness, harmony and the eternal cycle of life.

This piece explores layering, perception and balance. At its centre is an appliquéd form of green silk, whose soft lines echo classical Shippo patterns. A delicate frame of gold threads surrounds the central form—while simultaneously allowing it to extend beyond its own boundaries.
Overlaying this is a geometric arrangement of eight copper-coloured circles, embroidered in textured metal wire. Their even, almost architectural placement lends the composition an inner sense of equilibrium, with a clear focal point at its centre.
The work invites the viewer to question their direction of gaze: What comes to the foreground? What lies beneath? And how do perception and meaning shift depending on the viewer’s perspective?

Vernissage am 14.09.2025 von 12 Uhr bis 18 Uhr bei ArtViaEva in der Langgasse in Gelnhausen.

An diesem Tag findet ebenfalls ein verkaufsoffener Sonntag statt, so dass man im Anschluss noch stöbern und genießen kann.

Starting a creative practice doesn’t have to be perfect.

OVERLAPPING THOUGHTS
