Resonance-Deer 29/03/2026 – Meinolf Otto (54 x 37 cm acrylic on paper)

Hartmut Rosa’s resonance theory shapes my work as an artist. The deer represents the openness of the subject. Its gaze does not seek to dominate but is sensitive to the "other." It embodies the vulnerability we must allow to be affected. Only without armor can we receive a true response from the world.
This attitude shows in the gesture: the cheek pressing against a hand from the unknown—a symbol of holding and being held. The reaching hands mark the transformation (Anverwandlung). Resonance remains unavailable; we can only create the internal conditions for it.

Resonance-Owl 29/03/2026 – Meinolf Otto (54 x 37 cm acrylic on paper)

Part 2 of my series on Hartmut Rosa’s resonance theory. The owl represents reflection—the ability to pause and examine one’s own relationship with the world. Resonance is not an automatic state, but an active process:
• Affection (Affizierung): The gestures of seeing and listening intently symbolize the will to let oneself be "called" by the world.
• Transformation (Anverwandlung): The dance is a symbol for a successful responsive relationship—a dynamic interplay of letting oneself be guided and being the one who guides. One is transformed without losing their own voice.
• Unavailability (Unverfügbarkeit): The eye of the needle shows how precious and unavailable these moments of connection remain. They cannot be forced.
For me, the owl is a companion in the search for depth. In which moments do you feel a true "vibration" or resonance with your surroundings?

Resonance-Cat 29/03/2026 – Meinolf Otto (54 x 37 cm acrylic on paper)

The third part of my series on Hartmut Rosa’s resonance theory. While the cat completes this particular set of paintings, my exploration of resonance is far from over.
To me, this painting is an expression of unavailability (Unverfügbarkeit). I painted two faces physically touching, cheeks pressed together—yet they look past one another. It’s that moment when you hope for a connection, but it simply doesn't happen.
The cat in the painting symbolizes this stubborn independence for me. I often think of Rosa’s example: you want to pet the cat with the best intentions, but it withdraws, snarls, or shows its claws. As a painter, I am fascinated by this resistance. It’s the realization that I cannot force resonance. I have to endure non-resonance to give the moment the space to even exist.
This is my personal take on the search for an answer in a world that often remains silent—a search that will certainly continue to accompany me.
Do you know that feeling when the world doesn't respond, despite being so close?
