Michelle Palatnik

The conditions of seeing are central to my work. I make small paintings in privacy, quiet, and low light, often inside enclosed spaces I build in the studio to concentrate my attention. At LIA Leipzig, I am extending this into the exhibition space by creating a small, dim, partitioned room for one viewer at a time. I am taking the private conditions I need to make the work and making them the public conditions for viewing it. The images come from solitary walks through Leipzig, around the Spinnerei, and through streets, windows, passageways, and industrial interiors.

My time at LIA has been revolved around observing the lived-in space of the Spinnerei. My work is about in what it means to look, really look. The live/studio space has become an integral part of my work here. My practice centers around painting ordinary details that might be otherwise overlooked. Living directly amongst other artists has allowed me to capture real traces of being as they unfold. As the room is decorated with evidence of existence, inspiration follows.

This series explores the body as something no longer whole, shaped through gradual shifts, interruptions, and fragments that refuse to disappear. In drawing and ceramic form, the body is seen as residue rather than unity, persisting in traces, surfaces, and weight.

Loss becomes the starting point. A fragment or remnant is not an ending, but continuation. The works move between anatomy and abstraction, where meaning remains unstable and in flux.

The ceramic objects extend this into space. They are not representations, but presences, forms held in silence, existing in a state of becoming. Together, the works form a quiet language of transformation within what remains.

In my work, I currently find myself at the threshold between the body and physical space. LIA
provides the necessary distance and opens up a space in which I can deconstruct the body,
reassemble it, and transform it into dioramas through various collage techniques. In this way,
models and situations emerge that are absurd, landscape-like, and spatial continuations of
what has already been central to my ballpoint pen drawings: the moment of the unknown. At the
forefront is the experience of recognizing something while, at the same time, being unable to
fully grasp it.

"During my time at LIA, I have spent time in its many parks, observing bird species that have since been introduced to Australia. There is an uncanniness to this experience that has led me to reflect on
the legacy of introduced European species within the Australian landscape. Subjects are collaged together to create spaces that slip between the real and the artificial, the abstract and the figurative, the kitsch and the romantic, and the past and the present. These spaces invite viewers to consider the interconnectedness of these histories and ecologies, while reflecting
on how the landscape might be represented today."

Helen Wordsworth is an artist based in New York. Her work considers the flower not as symbol but as subject, held between states of bloom and collapse. Working in pastel, she builds fragmented, luminous compositions that explore light, transience, and the quiet intensity of seeing.

Michelle Palatnik

Michelle Palatnik is a New York-based painter who received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Her work explores psychological interiors, isolation, intimacy, and the charged space between presence and withdrawal. Rooted in observational painting, tonal abstraction, and the emotional architecture of light, her practice investigates how atmosphere, space, and compressed form can hold states of uncertainty,memory, and psychic tension. Palatnik is interested in painting as a way to make visible the quiet, unstable, and often unspoken conditions of human feeling.

Areeba Afreen Qureshi (b.2001) is a New York based artist from Lahore, Pakistan. She earned her BFA from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 2024 and is a graduating MFA candidate at the New York Academy of Art in the class of 2026. Her practice engages the body, space, and memory. She explores the ways in which memory and intimacy is held and translated across form, surface, and space. Qureshi has exhibited in Lahore at Muse Gallery, Ejaz Art Gallery, O Art Space, Pakistan Art Forum, and Kaleido Kontemporary. Her work has also been presented at Jutta Gallery, New York, as part of the New York Asian Arts Festival, the Cosmopolitan Club, and at the Take Home a N**e auction at Phillips. She took part in the Summer Undergraduate residency program at the New York Academy of Art in July 2023 and a residency at Muse Gallery in July 2024. Qureshi is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, and has also been awarded the Leslie T. and Francis Posey Scholarship, an Academy Scholarship, the Exhibitions Student Service Scholarship, and the LCU Women’s Housing Grant.

Carly Kate Andrew

Carly Kate Andrew is a figurative oil painter and printmaker based in New York City. She was born and raised in Naugatuck CT, USA. She is currently receiving her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She received her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Art history from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York in 2024. Her practice examines the persistence of feminine touch through everyday objects, revealing the human presence embedded within the overlooked. Her current body of work explores how domestic materials absorb memory and emotion long after the body has left, emphasizing the lasting impact of ordinary womanhood.

Working mainly from life, she is interested in the transformative power of intense observation where mundane sights become moments of cryptic profundity. She works as the printshop technician at NYAA and incorporates etching, lithography and monotype alongside her paintings.
