Lillie, an artist from Tanzania, will also be joining us on September 5th and 6th to showcase her work at the RUNDGANG in the Spinnerei ⭐️

During my residency in Leipzig, I wanted to explore disability from the perspective of barriers rather than impairment, looking at how physical environments and cultural attitudes can disable people. Guided by the social model of disability, I looked how everyday spaces and systems shape disabled people’s experiences of participation, belonging, and visibility. Through strings, my installation makes these often invisible barriers tangible,im inviting audiences to recognise disability as a social and structural issue rather than something located solely in the body.

On September 5th and 6th, Jungwon Phee, our artist-in-residence, will be opening his studio and showing his work at LIA.
He will also be opening THE THIRD Gallery—a new gallery that will be part of the Spinnerei gallery complex—on September 5th with a solo exhibition. Everyone is invited! Don’t miss it 💐

During my residency at LIA, I am examining whether my material experiments rooted in Eastern ink and industrial mediums like cement translate and adapt to a new European environment. By analyzing how my core textures evolve or maintain their structural integrity here, I am developing a series of black paintings in preparation for my upcoming exhibition at the Spinnerei gallery in September. Through these ink-based layers, I explore my identity as well as my central artistic statement: "Emotions are universal, while expressions are subjective."

On September 5 and 6, Gerardo Cordón, artist from Guatemala, will be opening his studio at the Spinnerei Rundgang. Everyone is welcome, don't miss it! ⭐️💐

Using mixed media and collage with delicate threads that hold found objects, cardboard, and cotton fabric in place, I create a lighthearted narrative. I aim to pose at least two obvious questions: What does “imperialist democracy” offer to those of us who yearn for freedom? And is the idea of democracy a threat to self-determination and peace?

At LIA in Leipzig’s Baumwollspinnerei, Roescheisen situates The Crimson between the site’s
cotton-spinning history and the German idiom Etwas zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch ein Leben
—a red thread runs through one’s life. Across this series of paintings, the idiom acquires a body: the
red thread renders continuity tangible.
Pouring pigment, moving performatively across the canvas, folding, cutting, piercing, and stitching,
she registers gravity, pressure, rhythm, and duration as Spuren: traces held by matter. The thread
becomes line, axis, seam, pulse, memory, and measure—a tuning fork between the visible and the
unseen, free to disappear, continue, and return.

Last but not least, we’d like to introduce Phee, our new artist in residence from South Korea. Welcome! 💐

It’s worth mentioning that Phee will be exhibiting his work in a solo show at THE THIRD THE THIRD , a new gallery from Seoul, that will open its doors in the Spinnerei on September 5–6 during Rundgang. Save the date!

피정원 Jungwon Phee

Jungwon Phee (b. 1993) is an artist based in Seoul and New York. His practice explores the relationship between memory, perception, and material through a sustained engagement with abstraction. Drawing on experiences of living in Canada, the United States, and Korea, Phee’s work reflects an ongoing negotiation between personal history and shifting cultural contexts.

Central to his practice is the use of black surfaces constructed through layers of ink, gesso, and pigment. Rather than functioning simply as a color, black operates as a structural ground upon which forms, gestures, and traces accumulate over time. Rectilinear elements such as squares and bands intermittently emerge across these surfaces, acting as spatial markers that register moments of perception, memory, and transformation. Phee’s paintings develop through a repetitive process of layering, interruption, and revision.

Cracks, bends, and irregularities within the surface are not corrected but incorporated as part of the work’s evolving structure. Through this iterative method, the paintings register the passage of time while revealing the tension between control and contingency.

HETTIE LILLIE

Lilian Munuo is a self-taught multidisciplinary visual artist from Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Her work draws from personal experience, using art as both expression and resistance. Working with strings, nails, and acrylics in mixed media and installation, Lilian explores themes of identity, resilience, healing, and visibility.

Growing up with a physical disability shaped her perspective and deepened her sensitivity to questions of belonging and representation. Through her practice, she transforms these experiences into powerful visual narratives that challenge exclusion and celebrate strength. Each piece becomes a dialogue between fragility and power, absence and presence, self and society.

Her works have been exhibited locally and internationally, including at Arts and Human Rights: Conversing Multiplicities at Concordia University in Canada. She has received recognition as a Mandela Washington Fellow, Tanzanian UN Youth Fellow, Africa No Filter Cover Star, and Tanzanian Sheroe, as well as awards from the Emergent Arts Space and Mulika Tanzania Arts and Human Rights competitions.

For Lilian, art is both a language and a space of healing a way to reimagine how the world sees difference and to reclaim visibility through hope, beauty, emotion, and truth.

ANNINA ROESCHEISEN

Annina Roescheisen (born 1982, Rosenheim, Germany) is a German-Slovenian artist based in New York. Painting and drawing are at the center of her practice; at the same time, she works with sculpture, installation, video, photography, and performance. Roescheisen explores the nature of perception and aesthetic experience and examines the transitions between polarities such as dream and reality, the visible and the invisible, the audible and the inaudible. Her works open up a field of experience in which the frequencies of color and their transcendent effect on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels can be experienced. Drawing on religious iconography, poetry, literature, bestiaries, spiritual philosophy, and nature mysticism, Roescheisen translates her Northern European cultural heritage—German Romanticism, transcendentalism, Gothic architecture, Nordic shamanism, myths, and fairy tales— into her art. Her work encapsulates humanity’s enduring fascination with the occult and the supernatural.

Using alchemical mixtures of pigments and minerals, Roescheisen intuitively shapes and structures elements on the canvas. The resulting images point to an intimate connection and performative immersion between the artist’s body and the creative process. This reveals resonances with the transformative and transcendent aspirations of postwar art. While John Cage and Pat Steir drew their spiritual inspiration from Buddhism, for example, and Eva Hesse from her Jewish heritage, Roescheisen draws on a variety of wisdom traditions in her practice. Her recent series *Vibrational Strings* (2019–2021), *Flying Dragons* (2020–2022), and her ongoing body of work incorporate metaphysical and mathematical codes that explore the deep connections between the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the spiritual.
