🎨 Intro Painting Workshop 🎨

Learn how to craft a painting from start to finish. This workshop is an introduction to the expressive and versatile medium of painting with a focus on foundation techniques. Learn how to mix colors, arrange your pallet and plan your painting in order to lay down those first few strokes with confidence. The focus of this workshop will be painting from direct observation, using still lifes.

Meet our new Artist-Instructor @toraaghabayova!

Tora is an Azerbaijani multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. Formally trained as a painter with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Azerbaijani State Art Academy. She also has over 13 years of teaching experience having taught at Azerbaijani State Art Academy, and Expat Learning Centre in, Shanghai, China.

Not only a talented artist and experienced teacher, Tora has a sense of humor that is abundantly evident in her work. "I often incorporate elements of the absurd," says Tora, "which in my view are capable of wreaking havoc on the monolith of our preconceptions." While Tora is talking about her own paintings here, I think this attitude can directly apply to teaching as well. Tora's breaking down of our preconceptions is a perfect place to start when you are learning drawing or painting for the first time.

She will be teaching two in-person workshops this summer! Drawing From Observation starting June 8, Intro Painting starting June 9. Head over to our website for more info and registration.

"Taking the Morpho Anatomy Workshop after learning about Structural Anatomy with Berlin Drawing Room has really helped me to visualise my drawing subjects in three dimensions. Since beginning the classes, I have found that I can make sketches quicker and more accurately, with a better understanding of the body’s basic (and more complex) shapes and how they fit together and overlap. This has also helped my drawings from life and in museums; partly by easing the intimidation of the blank page.

"I believe material and medium always carry meaning. There is meaning in the circumstances the work was produced. There is meaning in the history of the medium and material. There is meaning in the decisions I make through my work process. There is meaning in whether I choose to hang a canvas on the wall, or place it on the floor, and step into/onto the pictorial surface while creating a painting.

There is meaning in whether I frame the work, or exhibit it unprotected, vulnerable and raw. There is meaning in which image, artefact from the Altes Museum in Berlin is burned into my memory, or perhaps forgotten, and later revisited, reinterpreted through drawing and painting. There is meaning in my choice of color, palette, graphite, or charcoal, even when it sometimes seems arbitrary. Even when this meaning is not always known to me."

"When I need to rest my brain and just lose myself in the flow, I love to study Japanese Yokai. The monstrous subjects take the pressure off the need to make a “pretty” drawing and it all becomes a brush technique exercise that is going to look good anyway.

This image caught my attention because recently I feel the weight of all the demons I carry around and the baggage that comes with them. While drawing I started to really look at the subject and I realized that the guy is a warrior and the demons, even if only the dead are left, are still alive. So maybe the goal is to get to the point where your demons lose their bodies and their ability to hurt you, then they’re still there to talk and remind you why you created them. Drawing ugly, scary things has a cathartic effect that makes you feel better!" – G Caruso (Artist-Instructor of Sketchbook Practice: Monsters)

"In the first month of Structural Anatomy Workshop with G I have been challenged to think differently about how I approach drawing the figure.

By deconstructing parts of the body into their basic three-dimensional shapes and focusing on a different element each week, G gives us the tools to apply these methods to an understanding of any figure or reference. I have already noticed how our classes on the ribcage and pelvis have affected my approach to composition within my painting practice, and learning to recognise the ‘landmarks’ of the body has meant that I can apply what I have learned to even stylistic drawings." - @beth.simcock (Figure Drawing Scholarship Awardee)
