KAOS by
Day 7

Alle stadiene er like verdifulle.

The chaotic and absurd prepare us for the next step into the unknown. The boundaries of aesthetics expand in time with constant, new discoveries. In the meantime, particle physics has long since distanced itself from the general conception of reality. Chaos is an ideal state that lasts for a moment. After that, systems emerge and approach maximum order, only to dissolve immediately. All stages are equally valuable.

Day 6 ZEN by

Zen is a method of attaining freedom from the learned perception of the world as a rational order that follows rules. Trees become trees again and mountains become mountains again.

Zen is a method of attaining freedom from the learned perception of the world as a rational order that follows rules. Trees become trees again and mountains become mountains again.

Subgaze.com presents « 7 concepts by Kjell Varvin ». DAY 5 Ski jumping

Ski jumping - Intense tension and frightening anticipation, but at the run-up it's like a machine working its way precisely to the jump table, where the only goal is to maximise the pleasure of weightlessness.

Subgaze.com presents « 7 concepts by Kjell Varvin ». DAY 3 : composition

UK
Composition the main concern. The placement of the components must be so precise that together they create a functional whole. It is very much like an orchestra in which every instrument resonates in time and all musicians experience the maximum amount of joy and pleasure.

N

Subgaze.com presents « 7 concepts by Kjell Varvin ». DAY 2 : Still Life

UK
The greatest challenge is to overcome the use value and meaning of the objects in such a way that their own reality emerges free of definition, evaluation and classification. To enter a still life is to leave the realm of rules and conflicts. It is about taking the focus off the human need for security and comfort based on an ordinary logic.

N

I choose a colour or a piece of steel without knowing what move will follow next. Like in chess, it's about engaging the whole surface, the space, while each colour, shape or line unfolds its potential. The process follows an improvised logic in which irrational risk inevitably plays a part.

The print Piscine from 1974 by shows both the influence of US-American Minimal Art and the artist's preference for a variety of materials. Using graphite, pencil and gouache, he achieves the maximum range of colour qualities and surfaces that dark tones yield. Alternately matt and glossy, the picture surfaces alternate so that the overall impression changes depending on the angle of view.

Recycled art in a digital era

Subgaze.com presents a selection of works by the Norwegian multimedia artist . Changeability is a special feature of the art of Kjell Varvin, whose main work consists of short-lived installations. Since the 1990s, the artist has also experimented with digital media and image processing programmes. A constant testing of new possibilities and perspectives characterises his working method. Material combinations with filigree details create poetic moments.

The Artist presents paintings and prints on Subgaze.com. In a conversation with the art historian she talks about essential rules of composition and her way of creating tension:

“Creating a tension that is good for the space means questioning how long you can stretch a line before the tension drops. There is always a maximum point and that is also where I go with the colour. The composition opens up the space by means of contrasts, such as complementary, warm, cold, quantity contrasts, etc. This process has to be very precise. It has to be exactly the chosen colour or tone, otherwise it doesn't work. The lines and shapes organise the space and create rhythm. The colours, for their part, create the dynamics, like a net that stretches out.”

"There is something very special about architectural space because the format is so much bigger than a human body. Thus,...

"There is something very special about architectural space because the format is so much bigger than a human body. Thus, one will never be able to capture everything at once. Instead, you have to move around in the room, turn, look up and down. Eventually, the complete image will be composed of many sequences that are then brought together in memory."

“I always try to draw the eye to places that are normally not seen. A lot of things are otherwise not perceived in that sense. Corners are overlooked as well as details on the ceiling or what happens below eye level. It seldom happens that someone sits down or rolls around on the floor like children. That would bring a completely different experience.”

Gabriele Schlesselmann

The North German artist GABRIELE SCHLESSELMANN spent nine years of her early youth in Turkey. Gabriele Schlesselmann played both piano and flute for many years and also sang in the Berlin Concert Choir before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Despite her musical talent, she decided to study fine arts at the then Hochschule der Künste Berlin.

After successfully participating in various scholarship programmes in Paris and Berlin, Gabriele Schlesselmann taught at the Berlin University of the Arts. Cooperations with composers and a loudspeaker manufacturer testify to an interest in combining different sensory experiences. Analogous to music, rhythm and intervals play essential roles in her video works.

In the series The Impact, white paint hits fleeing or falling bodies like a violent mass. The title and motif point to the use of water cannons as long-range weapons, as used by the police in confrontations at demonstrations. Before the fall of communism, Gabriele Schlesselmann experienced the power of such a water jet on her own body. In the small-format series, the clash of matter has a violent effect despite the restrained use of colour.
