Making-Of: A new backdrop for "The Sleeping Beauty"
For the new version of John Neumeier´s "Sleeping Beauty" ballet, the sets & costumes by Jürgen Rose are being looked over individually and some of them are being newly made. In the paint shop, two new backdrops have been created in demanding manual work. The making-of video gives an insight into the work on the so-called summer-winter backdrop. "Bernstein Dances" Ballet Revue by John Neumeier
Lively, swinging, dynamic, but also thoughtful, melancholic, highly concentrated: With "Bernstein Dances", John Neumeier has put together a ballet revue that inspires from beginning to end, illuminating all the many different facets of Leonard Bernstein. In addition to the great classics from "West Side Story", Bernstein songs such as "Simple Song", "Wrong Note Rag" & "A Little Bit in Love" and the rousing Candide Overture, the piece's program also includes lesser-known titles such as excerpts from "Five Anniversaries". Want to learn more about the piece and see the ballet live? On October 22, we're offering a CanteenTalk for young people 30 and under (pupils, trainees & students) - sign up quickly at [email protected] and snag a ticket for just €15! The introduction will be held in German.
"Sylvia" Ballet by John Neumeier #3
On Friday, September 17, we will once again show John Neumeier's ballet "Sylvia" at the Staatsoper Hamburg! According to mythology, the goddess Diana was known to the Greeks as a virgin huntress. But did you know that Diana had a secret? The story of Diana and her (albeit chaste) love for Endymion, the beautiful youth who was put into an eternal sleep by Jupiter. According to the myth, Luna, with whom Diana was identified, visited him at night when he slept in his arbor. John Neumeier created a beautiful pas de deux for the two in his ballet "Sylvia", here danced by Anna Laudere (Diana) and Jacopo Bellussi (Endymion).

In one hour, the curtain will rise on the revival of John Neumeier's ballet "Sylvia"! In Part 2, Sylvia is a guest at the Ball of Eros/Orion and becomes aware of her feminity. She discovers pleasure. Her sensuality aflame, Sylvia is overwhelmed by the memory of Diana and Aminta. A big toi, toi, toi to our dancers and all involved!
"Sylvia" Ballet by John Neumeier
Tonight is the night: we open the new season with a ballet that has a long tradition: "Sylvia". The original version, premiered in Paris in 1876, was both a high point and a departure from Romantic ballet. John Neumeier also created his version for the Paris Opera and caused a sensation in the ballet world with it in 1997. For the newly rehearsed revival, our female dancers learned archery to portray Sylvia and the other nymphs in Diana's band of armored hunters. Have a look!
"Hamlet 21" Ballet by John Neumeier (German voice-over)
Tonight is the last opportunity for the time being to see John Neumeier's new ballet "Hamlet 21" at the @Staatsoper Hamburg! Appropriately, here is our new trailer with German voice-over.
"Hamlet 21" Ballet by John Neumeier
"I have always searched for the center, the essence of this drama. In Shakespeare's "Hamlet", the ghost appears to his son and demands revenge for his murder. In this very moment, in which the desire for revenge is transferred from father to son, the central conflict of the play becomes apparent: the dilemma of a young man struggling to deal with his responsibility for the past", says John Neumeier. His new Hamlet ballet, "Hamlet 21", celebrates its premiere at Staatsoper Hamburg tonight. We can hardly wait!
"Hamlet 21" Ballet by John Neumeier

International Dance Day 2021 - John Neumeier´s Message
Happy #internationaldanceday! In 1982 the International Dance Day was founded to be celebrated every year on the 29th April, the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet. Especially in these difficult times, when the dancers are unable to connect and communicate with the audience, it is important to look forward, to have a goal in mind, says John Neumeier in his video message. So in that sense: What better day than International Dance Day could we have chosen to spread some very good news of the Hamburg Ballet and announce the new schedule for the 46th Hamburg Ballet Days! *

"Saint Matthew Passion" - Ballet by John Neumeier
The Easter long weekend is usually a time for traditions, whether it’s celebrating together with family & friends or travelling, but this year Easter is no doubt looking very different for all of us. However, one operatic Easter tradition that we can all still take a part in from the safety of our own homes is experiencing Johann Sebastian Bach’s oratorio St. Matthew Passion. Here are some impressions from the revival of John Neumeier´s moving ballet "Saint Matthew Passion" in 2016.
GHOST LIGHT by John Neumeier

Now released on DVD and Blu-ray by EuroArts Music the world premiere of John Neumeier‘s new creation “Ghost Light“ using solo piano music by Franz Peter Schubert, performed live on stage by the star pianist David Fray at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
