Who are the dancers of ENSEMBLE (premiere: 18 January 2023 | 7.30 pm | )?

Meet :

JOEL SMALL is an Australian choreographer, dancer and drag artist living in Berlin. In his work he deliberately subverts categories such as pop culture and high culture, subculture and mainstream, in order to unite them in new forms. Central to his work is the play with and sabotage of binary identity markers - with the aim of liberating q***r bodies and their stories from marginalization and making them visible. After completing his Bachelor's degree at the Western AustralianAcademy of Performing Arts, Joel was a soloist with the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company. He has been freelancing since 2020, including productions at Deutsche Oper Berlinand Kampnagel, Hamburg. In the drag character "Reflektra" he has been performing throughout Germany and abroad since 2019. Most recently, Reflektra was seen as Rusalka at the Stuttgart State Opera.

We end up in the same dilemma again and again. The longing for togetherness rubs up against the search for separation. And although these two forces are seemingly incompatible, it is clear that they cannot exist without each other. When we focus on the same thing – on the perfect unison of intention and movement in different bodies –, we inevitably come to the emergence of differences. And vice versa in the same way.

With ENSEMBLE choreographer Jenny Beyer and eight dancers have decided to brush against the grain of a traditional form of group dance: the classical corps de ballet as an equalising human formation is broken up.

What does it mean to engage in unison and in many? Will the dancers seek assimilation or, even more so, separation? Quite simply, they move away from this simplistic, two-part categorisation and inspire each other in a game of constant movement. Seemingly equal forms give way to individualities and a word that doesn't really exist: Multi-corporeality.

Who are the dancers of ENSEMBLE (premiere: 18 January 2023 | 7.30 pm | Kampnagel - Internationales Zentrum für schönere Künste)?

Let's get to know Venetsiana Kalampaliki:

VENETSIANA KALAMPALIKI (b. 1991, she/her) works in the field of performing arts as a dancer and choreographer. She explores movement through different media such as text and develops her artistic practice within interdisciplinary collaborations and participation in workshops and festivals of contemporary dance, digital and visual arts, performance and disability arts. She is a graduate of the School of Political Sciences, University of Athens (2018) and the National School of Dance in Athens (2016) and holds a Master in Fine Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts (2021-22). Her project 'Recall' (2020-21), an Onassis Stegi production developed in the framework of the EU program Europe Beyond Access, was presented at the New Choreographers Festival 7 of Onassis Stegi; the Holland Dance Festival; the 27th Kalamata International Dance Festival; the Oriente Occidente Dance Festival and Skånes Dansteater and is currently on tour. In 2021, she created the digital group project Besuch at the New Choreographers Festival 8 of Onassis Stegi. In 2021-22, she was a resident choreographer at the program K3 – Zentrum für Choreographie | Tanzplan Hamburg, where she conducted research on how she can integrate accessibility services within her artistic practice and presented the piece 'Phrases' at Kampnagel. She has been awarded the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Artist Fellowship by ARTWORKS in 2022.

Not even eight weeks left until the premiere of ENSEMBLE (18 January | 7.30 pm | Kampnagel) – about time to get to know the eight dancers of the piece a little better.

Let's start with Chartreuse:

CHARTREUSE is a choreographer, improviser, dancer, and organizer within q***r community in Berlin. Her work and experience are rooted in collaboration and incorporates movement, site, ritual, and new relationships to spectatorship. Chartreuse attended University in San Francisco where she earned a BFA in dance. After school she relocated to Seattle, spending 2012–2018 focusing on creating choreographic work, premiering three full-length performances (the PYLON series). Now she lives in Berlin, spends time with her sisterhood of trans siblings, and practices somatic forms of witchcraft with a focus of self-realization, communal care, and survival strategy.

Nach der erfolgreichen Premiere im September laden Tänzerin und Choreografin Jenny Beyer und ihr Team Jenny Beyer Productions erneut zum Offenen Studio ins Kulturhaus. Dieses Mal an einem Sonntagnachmittag. Eingeladen sind alle – unabhängig von Alter und Erfahrung –, die Lust auf Bewegung haben. Mit jedem Studio gibt es etwas Neues zu entdecken: eine künstlerische Frage, eine Situation, eine Geste, eine Bewegung oder eine Choreografie, die sich innerhalb der Gruppe weiterentwickelt. Dabei kann jede’r selbst entscheiden, ob sie/er sich mitbewegen oder lieber zuschauen möchte. Das OFFENE STUDIO richtet sich an alle Menschen, die neugierig sind auf zeitgenössischen Tanz und die sich für die Begegnung mit dem eigenen Körper und Körpern in der Gruppe interessieren. Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich, der Eintritt ist frei!

Jenny Beyers neues Stück ENSEMBLE spielt mit der klassischen Form des Corps de Ballet und widersetzt sich dieser: Statt dem Prinzip der Gleichheit und Gleichzeitigkeit zu folgen, fokussiert die Choreografie auf die Vielfalt von acht Personen und deren Körperlichkeit. Was bedeutet es, sich aufeinander einzulassen, ohne unmittelbar Mechanismen der Angleichung zu folgen?

Jede*r Tänzer*in bringt unterschiedliche, auch biografische Motivationen mit zu tanzen.
Was werden die acht Tänzer*innen der Gruppe geben, was werden sie voneinander nehmen?

Jenny Beyer's new piece ENSEMBLE plays with and defies the classical form of the corps de ballet: instead of following the principles of sameness and simultaneity, the choreography focuses on the multiplicity of eight people and their physicality. Back in the studio with Joel Donald Small, Salah Zater, Chartreuse Lorraine Coleman and Chris Leuenberger for our first rehearsal week of ENSEMBLE (premiere: 18 January '23 | Kampnagel - Internationales Zentrum für schönere Künste) after the 'summer break'.

Already excited for Chihiro Araki, Sunday Israel Akpan, Venetsiana Kalampaliki and Nina Wollny joining us in different constellations during the course of the next weeks and months!

As part of our three-year-project TO GIVE–TO TAKE–TO NEED we are establishing a residency programme at our studio 'Alte Post' – and we're beyond happy to have Salah Zater as our first artist in residence from 15–26 August 2022.

With this residency programme we would like to give regionally, nationally & internationally working choreographers & dancers time & space to pursue their own artistic practice and to develop their concepts of audience encounters.

Salah Zater's work moves between dance, performance & intervention in public space & critically engages with issues of racism, decolonisation, human rights, social justice & love. Salah develops movements, dance strategies & -actions to explore the social & political relationship between body & space. He studies the connection between body, mind & spirit and seeks to give particular expression to emotions through movement.

At the end of his residency Salah will invite you for an OPEN STUDIO:

Last week's Open Studio with Nina Wollny and Jetzmann at HausDrei was really special for us: It was the kick-off for many more Open Studios in 2022 and especially in 2023 at the cultural centers HausDrei and Kulturhaus Eidelstedt and the first time we could feel the sun (and some rain) on our skin while moving together outside. ☀️

SUITE (6+) at KuB Bad Oldesloe

Tomorrow we'll bring Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Cello Suite Nr. 1 to KUB - Kultur- und Bildungszentrum Bad Oldesloe: Let's explore how the music makes us jump, stomp, sway and spin!

In SUITE (6+) two dancers and a cellist invite children to experience, dance and enjoy music together. They open themselves to the stories, images and emotions that music can trigger in the dancing body.
