It’s been a while since we celebrated our closing event in Lantz’scher Park. 🍂 Here’s a little recap for those who couldn’t join us.

A big thank you to the participants of the tour with our curator Katharina Klang, to Lilli Lake and Flora Weber for their impressive performance Polyphonic Breath, and to Seren.a for their amazing closing DJ set. 🦋 Also, a huge thank you to all our helpers that day!

Lin May Saeed – HOLLOW

For more than two decades, the sculptor and animal rights activist Lin May Saeed explored the relationship between humans and animals and the destruction of natural habitats by humans since the Neolithic Age through her art. Her sculptures, reliefs, gate structures and installations tell stories about the exploitation of animals, propose liberatory narratives and paint utopias of peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.

The bronze sculpture Hollow was created in collaboration with Peri and Kimba, two rabbits whom Lin May Saeed rescued and subsequently shared her flat with. As flatmates, Peri and Kimba had the opportunity to chew a hole into a polystyrene sheet lying around the studio, building a temporary nest. Later, the hole was filled and cast in bronze. The artist perceived this as an act of collaboration.

In The Park as Lover, Hollow will serve as a water bowl for other animals and insects. On close inspection, you can just about see the structure of the polystyrene, which is made up of tiny spheres or balls. They provide gentle access to the water and protect animals from drowning, which is a danger with more conventional, smoother and steeper water bowls.

Lin May Saeed’s works, including Hollow , express a longing for a symbolic return to the watering hole from the Epic of Gilgamesh, where humans and animals drink together. Stories like these allow us to travel through time and carry new ways of coexisting into the future.

Katja Tönnissen – BAR SENTIVO

Katja Tönnissen is a painter and sculptor who teaches modeling at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In her works, the artist humorously explores the potential of everyday objects that surround us, such as lamps, chairs, or counters, as projection surfaces for wistful fictions through which we can transition from the ordinary to the imaginary.

For The Park as Lover, Katja Tönnissen designed a bar called Bar Sentivo, an interspecies meeting point that hosts events for both human and non-human visitors and appears as a mobile installation in various locations throughout the park. While the upper half of the bar follows a classic design, the baseboard features ceramic shells protruding at snout level, serving as water-dispensing drinking vessels. Shells, associated with the sound of the sea, form phonetic portals to another realm. Through small air columns, barely audible sounds in the environment, whose frequencies roughly match the natural frequency of the shell, are set into vibration, making them perceptible to us. These soundamplifying shells emphasize what surrounds us – even if it cannot be visually captured.

Katja Tönnissen enjoys the interplay between the immediate readability of the seemingly banal and the reduction to pop-cultural icons like shells and palm trees, which are crafted using elaborate sculptural techniques such as bronze casting or ceramics. The sensory experiences during the realization of her works, the handling of clay, and the careful blending of colors convey sensual qualities that resonate in the title (Bar, that I feel) and as a dedication to craftsmanship.

Just as summer comes to an end, we too are saying goodbye to Lantz’scher Park as we close our exhibition The Park as Lover in the north of Düsseldorf this Sunday.

We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition with us one last time, enjoy the performance Polyphonic Breath by Lilli Lake in collaboration with Flora Weber, and join us as we wrap up the evening with a DJ set by Seren.a.

Lilli Lake – POLYPHONIC BREATH

In Lilli Lake’s cavity-like installation, air functions as an invisible, playful link between human and more-than-human breathing bodies, becoming an erotic messenger carrying life within itself.

In The Park as Lover, Lilli Lake’s sonic sculpture encompasses gentle gestures such as breaths of air or fleeting blown kisses. Here, air and breath are visualised not as passive resources but rather as spheres of tender contact and connection.
In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Artemis is the patron goddess of nature. She aids the tree nymph Syrinx in her escape from the powerful god Pan’s patriarchal hold, transforming her into a hollow water reed in her time of need. Syrinx, however, doesn’t completely escape Pan’s rule, but is used by him as an instrument – a panpipe. Instead of continuing to hold her song captive in a Pan-dominated lament, Lilli Lake liberates in her performance the tree nymph by opening up the rigid structure of the instrument. In an act of empowerment, the sculpture returns her to her autonomous being.

Through her interpretative work, Lilli Lake transforms the male-dominated narratives of ancient myth into new concepts. She opens up bodies that are
full of cultural resonances and turns them inside-out, revealing obscure and intimate chambers.

Hedda Roman – PANDEMONIUM

The artist collective Hedda Roman is dedicated to training artificial intelligence (AI) in order to create installation works that combine filmic elements, surreal animations, literature and sculpture. Through its work it explores existential questions arising from our preoccupation with (non)human identities and the difficulties of coexisting with each other.

For The Park as Lover, the collective has written a poem entitled Rogue Planet 28, which was translated into a boundary-blurring cinematic experience by a large language model, a form of AI based on voice input.

Old Boy – an entity created by Hedda Roman – rises from the depths of the grotto in the Lantz’scher Park and addresses us with words of bleakness. It describes the state of losing the world. She speaks of what it would be like to wake up in the morning and find the planet extinguished, with a mere gap reporting to the universe. As if a subconsciously imagined enormity had suddenly materialised.

In Pandemonium, Hedda Roman address a core problem of our time. How can we communicate something that has not yet materialised, that is indescribable? In a deeper sense, Hedda Roman explore the question of how the limitations of our language define the limits of our individual world. In doing so, they not only draw on the discourses around the AI model used in the project, which generates images from language, but also seek ways of communicating the consequences of the climate crisis, bringing them into narrative form.
