Akademie der Künste der Welt The Academy of the Arts of the World is an international institution fostering intercultural dialogue

The Akademie der Künste der Welt (Academy of the Arts of the World, ADKDW) is an international platform for contemporary art and public discourse in Cologne. The Academy members - a global collective of artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners - shape the ADKDW and its program through their interdisciplinary perspectives and artistic practices. Through its program, ADKDW promotes a critical u

nderstanding of the arts and aims to reveal and rethink the contemporary conditions of cultural history and cultural production. With this in mind, ADKDW organizes events and exhibitions, produces publications, and initiates research and study projects. One focus of Max Jorge Hinderer Cruz's artistic direction since 2022 is the reappraisal of German colonial history and the examination of the colonial legacy in the present. The Academyspace regularly hosts exhibitions and events of various artistic and discursive disciplines. In addition, the ADKDW organizes concerts, readings, lectures and workshops with various partners at different locations in the city. In this way, the ADKDW creates a laboratory of artistic and political questions in Cologne and makes the potential of an intercultural urban society visible.

Die Akademie der Künste der Welt verabschiedet sich – Die ACADEMY OF THE ARTS OF THE WORLD übernimmt

Nach zwölf Jahren stellt die Akademie der Künste der Welt (ADKDW) ihren Betrieb zum 30. Juni 2025 ein. Hintergrund ist die Entscheidung der Stadt Köln, im Rahmen des Haushalts 2025/26 die institutionelle Förderung der ADKDW vollständig zu streichen.

Und zugleich richten wir den Blick nach vorn, denn das inhaltliche Profil der ADKDW soll dennoch erhalten bleiben:
Auf Initiative von Monika kerkmann, Jörg Kobel und Jan Kryszons gründet sich unter dem Namen ACADEMY OF THE ARTS OF THE WORLD ein neuer Verein, der das internationale Netzwerk und die transdisziplinäre Praxis fortführen und weiterentwickeln will – mit dem Anspruch, weiterhin marginalisierte Perspektiven sichtbar zu machen, globale Verflechtungen zu reflektieren und neue Formen des Austauschs zu ermöglichen.

After twelve years, the Akademie der Künste der Welt (ADKDW) will cease operations on June 30, 2025. The background to this is the City of Cologne's decision to completely eliminate institutional funding for the ADKDW as part of the 2025/26 budget.

At the same time, we are looking forward to the future, as the ADKDW's programmatic profile is to be continued:
On the initiative of Monika Kerkmann, Jörg Kobel, and Jan Kryszons, a new association called ACADEMY OF THE ARTS OF THE WORLD is being founded with the aim of continuing and further developing the international network and transdisciplinary practice—with the goal of continuing to make marginalized perspectives visible, reflecting on global interconnections, and enabling new forms of exchange.

“For over twelve years now, the ADKDW stands for a plural, diverse and inclusive Cologne, that relies on cultural exchange, dialogue and community, instead of intolerance, xenophobia and homophobia. We are living in a time, in which hate, fascism and war is being normalised. The fact that the City of Cologne is announcing such drastic budget cuts aiming especially at the ADKDW, definitely sends the wrong message.”

Der Rat der Stadt Köln hat im Zuge der Verabschiedung des Haushalts 2025/26 der vollständigen Streichung der städtischen Mittel für die ADKDW ab dem Jahr 2026 mehrheitlich zugestimmt. Damit entfällt die finanzielle Grundlage für den Fortbestand der Institution in ihrer bisherigen Form. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat der Rat die Liquidation der ADKDW beschlossen. Gleichzeitig wurde ein Änderungsantrag angenommen, der vorsieht, dass die ADKDW in Abstimmung mit dem Kulturamt und dem Beteiligungsmanagement der Stadt Köln Optionen zur Weiterführung ihrer Arbeit prüft – allerdings ohne kommunale Finanzierung. Ob und in welcher Form unter diesen Umständen eine tragfähige Alternative entwickelt werden kann, die es der ADKDW ermöglicht, auch weiterhin künstlerische, wissenschaftliche und gesellschaftspolitische Impulse in der Stadt Köln zu setzen, wird in den kommenden Monaten einer eingehenden Prüfung unterzogen. Wir danken unseren Partner*innen, den Kulturschaffenden und Künstler*innen für die wertvolle Arbeit und die zahlreichen Beiträge in den letzten zwölf Jahren sowie für die Unterstützung, die sie der Institution in den letzten Monaten haben zukommen lassen.

In the course of passing the 2025/26 budget, the Cologne City Council has voted by a majority to completely cut the city's funding for the ADKDW from 2026. This eliminates the financial basis for the continued existence of the institution in its current form. At the same time, an amendment was passed that intends the ADKDW to examine options for continuing its work in coordination with the Cultural Office and the Investment Management of the City of Cologne – albeit without municipal funding. Whether and in what form a viable alternative can be developed under these circumstances, which will enable the ADKDW to continue to set artistic, scientific and socio-political impulses in the city of Cologne, will be subject to a thorough examination in the coming months. We would like to thank our partners, the cultural workers and artists for their valuable work and numerous contributions over the past twelve years, as well as for the support they have given the institution in recent months.

Im Rahmen des Programms „Mutual Empathies“ ist Vanja Smiljanić Artist-in-Residence in der ADKDW. Mit dem Projekt reagieren Künstler*innen auf die ökopolitischen Fragen, die sich für die globale Gesellschaft stellen.

Am 15.02. präsentiert Vanja Smiljanić zusammen mit Saroot Supasuthivech künstlerische Arbeiten und stellt uns ihre partizipative Forschung vor. Anschließend ist das Publikum eingeladen, Fragen zu stellen und gemeinsam zu diskutieren.

Das Festival „Where the Wind Scatters Seeds;" ergänzt sein klassisches Filmprogramm durch alternative Formen – darunter Essen, Musik, eine interaktive Zeichenecke und ein heilender Gesprächskreis. So wird das Kino zu einem Raum, der ursprüngliche Formen von Zugehörigkeit pflegt. Reflektiert wird über das Wesen von Heimat: ihre Präsenz, die Bedeutungen, die sie trägt, und die Leere, die sie in ihrer Abwesenheit hinterlässt.

Unter dem Titel "Cross-Community solidarity through ancestral remembrance & radical imagination" laden Amdrita Jakupi & Dr. Cucuteni das Publikum zum Austausch über Geschichte und Zugehörigkeit ein.

The festival “Where the Wind Scatters Seeds;” complements its classical film program with alternative forms – including food, music, an interactive drawing corner and a healing conversation circle. In this way, the cinema becomes a space that cultivates original forms of belonging. The essence of home is reflected upon: its presence, the meanings it carries, and the emptiness it leaves in its absence.

„Where the Wind Scatters Seeds“: Festival Tag 2

Am 08.02. geht das Filmfestival „Where the Wind Scatters Seeds“ in die zweite Runde - kuratiert von jungen Nachwuchskurator*innen im Rahmen des Projekts „New Curators“.

Unter dem Titel „Our Eyes Have Exhausted the Vocabulary of Death“ präsentieren wir am zweiten Festivaltag drei Filmprogrammen und einer Musikperformance von Atena Eshtiaghi.

Das Programm, dessen Titel von Etel Adnans Jenin entlehnt ist, vereint Filme, die den Einsatz visueller Medien in kolonialen und autoritären Systemen thematisieren. Die gezeigten Werke betonen das überdauernde und zugleich verletzliche Wesen der Erinnerung. Die Filme geben Einblicke, wie das Erzählen von Geschichten historische Ereignisse lebendig halten, Solidarität schaffen und Hoffnung im Angesicht von Verlusterfahrungen spenden kann.

“Where the Wind Scatters Seeds": Festival Day 2

On February 8th, the film festival “Where the Wind Scatters Seeds” enters its second round - curated by young curators as part of the “New Curators” project.

On the second day of the festival, titled “Our Eyes Have Exhausted the Vocabulary of Death”, we present three film programs and a music performance by Atena Eshtiaghi.
Borrowing its title from Etel Adnan’s Jenin, this program brings together films that challenge the colonial and authoritarian use of visual media. The works shown highlight memory’s survival and vulnerability. The films offer insights into how storytelling can preserve histories, forge solidarity, and foster hope amidst loss.

Präsentation & Artist Talk mit Vanja Smiljanić
(Vanja Smiljanić) und Saroot Supasuthivech.

Inspiriert durch einen Besuch im litauischen Museum für Ethnokosmologie beschäftigt sich Vanja Smiljanić mit der Beziehung von Volksgruppen zum Kosmos und dessen Vorgängen, wie Sonnen- und Mondphasen und den Bewegungen der Planeten und der Sterne.

Saroot Supasuthivech erkundet die Bestattungsriten der thailändischen Diaspora und erforscht mythische Erzählungen aus dem Baltikum, folkloristische Gottheiten und regionale Sakralarchitektur. Dabei integriert er Licht und Ton mit Augmented-Reality-Technologie (AR).

Am 15.02. werden beide Residenzkünstler*innen Bewegtbildarbeiten zeigen, ihre partizipative Forschung vorstellen und mit dem Publikum über ihre Projekte sprechen.
Ihr Aufenthalt ist Teil des Programms „Mutual Empathies“ in Kooperation mit und dem Goethe-Institut Vilnius Goethe-Institut Litauen. Dabei reagieren Künstler*innen auf die ökopolitischen Fragen, die sich für die globale Gesellschaft stellen.

Presentation & Artist Talk with Vanja Smiljanić and Saroot Supasuthivech

Inspired by a visit to the Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology, Vanja Smiljanić is exploring the relationship between ethnic groups and the cosmos, its processes, the phases of the sun and moon, and the movements of the planets and stars.

Saroot Supasuthivech explores Thai diasporic funeral rites, legendary narratives of the Baltic regio, folkloric deities, and regional religious architecture, integrating light and sound with augmented reality (AR) technology.

On 15 02 both Artists-in-Residence will screen moving-image works, share their participatory research and converse with the audience about their projects. Their residency is part of the “Mutual Empathies” program in cooperation with and the Goethe-Institut Vilnius in which artist are responding to the ecopolitical questions looming for global society.

Wir begrüßen Artist-in-Residence Vanja Smiljanić (Belgrad, *1986), Vanja Smiljanić, bildende Künstlerin und Performancekünstlerin. Vanja beschäftigt sich mit interdisziplinären Projekten, die bildende Kunst, Video und Performance integrieren.

Vanja Smiljanics Aufenthalt ist Teil des Programms „Mutual Empathies“, indem Künstler*innen auf die ökopolitischen Fragen reagieren, die sich für die globale Gesellschaft stellen. Für ihre Residenz verbindet sie ihre intensive Forschung über den Saltonsee im Südwesten der USA mit hydrologischen Stätten in Vilnius und Köln und setzt Schlaflieder als beruhigendes Ritual gegen Klimakatastrophen und den ökologischen Kollaps ein.

Am 15.02. werden Vanja Smiljanić und Artist-in-Residence Saroot Supasuthivech Bewegtbildarbeiten zeigen, ihre noch laufende partizipative Forschung vorstellen und mit dem Publikum über ihre Projekte sprechen.

We welcome Artist-in-Residence Vanja Smiljanić (Belgrad, *1986) Vanja Smiljanić, visual and performance artist. Vanja focuses on interdisciplinary projects integrating visual arts, video, and performance.

Vanja Smiljanić’s residency is part of Mutual Empathies programme in which artist are responding to the ecopolitical questions looming for global society. For her residency she connects her intensive research on the Salton Sea in the American Southwest to hydrological sites in Vilnius and Cologne, using lullabies as a palliative ritual for climate catastrophe and ecological collapse.

On 15 02 Vanja Smiljanić and Artist-in-Residence Saroot Supasuthivech will screen moving-image works, share their participatory research still in progress, and converse with the audience about their projects.

„Where the Wind Scatters Seeds“: Festival Tag 1

Am 07.02. beginnt das Filmfestival „Where the Wind Scatters Seeds“, kuratiert von jungen Nachwuchskurator*innen im Rahmen des Projekts „New Curators“.

Unter dem Titel „(dis)location within“ startet der erste Festivaltag mit zwei Kurzfilmprogrammen: Wie sieht Heimat aus? Was prägt die Räume, in denen wir leben? Welche Mythen nähren die Mauern, die um uns herum wachsen? Wenn wir unsere Heimat verlassen, wenn die Heimat die Orte verlässt, in denen wir sind – existiert sie dann überhaupt noch?

On February 7th, the film festival ‘Where the Wind Scatters Seeds’ starts, curated by young curators as part of the ‘New Curators’ project.

The first day of the festival, entitled “(dis)location within”, kicks off with two short film programmes: What does home look like? What do the spaces we inhabit carry? What myths feed the walls that grow around us? When home leaves the spaces we are in, is home even there?
