The Academy of the Arts of the World is an international institution fostering intercultural dialogue

The Akademie der Künste der Welt (Academy of the Arts of the World, ADKDW) is an international platform for contemporary art and public discourse in Cologne. The Academy members - a global collective of artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners - shape the ADKDW and its program through their interdisciplinary perspectives and artistic practices. Through its program, ADKDW promotes a critical u

nderstanding of the arts and aims to reveal and rethink the contemporary conditions of cultural history and cultural production. With this in mind, ADKDW organizes events and exhibitions, produces publications, and initiates research and study projects. One focus of Max Jorge Hinderer Cruz's artistic direction since 2022 is the reappraisal of German colonial history and the examination of the colonial legacy in the present. The Academyspace regularly hosts exhibitions and events of various artistic and discursive disciplines. In addition, the ADKDW organizes concerts, readings, lectures and workshops with various partners at different locations in the city. In this way, the ADKDW creates a laboratory of artistic and political questions in Cologne and makes the potential of an intercultural urban society visible.

In collaboration with the Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler (JWC, Jugendfreizeitwerk Köln e.V.), our Artist-in-Residence SHELLY QUEST has been creating a participatory program for students from the north of Cologne since January.

For over 40 years, the Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler (JWC) has been supporting teenagers and young adults in their life orientation and preparing them for school graduation. The young people are trained in three areas: printing, woodworking and metalworking. The one-year intensive professional and social orientation program serves for many as a platform for entry into working life and social participation.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler (JWC) gestaltet unsere Artist-in-Residence Shelly Quest seit Januar ein partizipatives Programm für Schüler*innen aus dem Kölner Norden.

Die Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler (JWC) fördert seit über 40 Jahren Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene in ihrer Lebensorientierung und bereitet sie auf einen Schulabschluss vor. Angelernt werden die Jugendlichen in den drei Gewerken Druck, Holz und Metall. Die einjährige intensive Berufs- und soziale Orientierungshilfe dient für viele als Sprungbrett in das Arbeitsleben und die gesellschaftliche Teilhabe.

The "Learning to Listen" series at the Kompakt Records store, the legendary Cologne-based electronic music label, explores forms of listening and non-listening - and the knowledge that can be gleaned from them. The central concern of "Learning to Listen" is to understand why certain sounds, songs and narratives are heard and others are not. Together with our guests we want to learn and un-learn how to listen.

Our upcoming guests are rapper SHELLY QUEST, author Julius Vapiano, Museum Ludwig Köln director Yilmaz Dziewior and curator Aneta Neringa Rostkowska (Temporary Gallery).

Shifting between music and conversation, they present selected songs, song fragments or instrumentals and classify them from a personal, music-historical and/or political point of view.

Die Reihe "Learning to Listen" im Kompakt Record Store des legendären Kölner Labels für elektronische Musik beschäftigt sich mit Formen des Zuhören und Nicht-Hörens – und dem Wissen, das daraus geschöpft werden kann. Das zentrale Anliegen von "Learning to Listen" ist es, zu verstehen, warum bestimmte Klänge, Lieder und Narrative Gehör finden und wiederum andere nicht. Gemeinsam mit unseren Gäst*innen wollen wir das Zuhören lernen und ver-lernen.

Unsere kommenden Gäst*innen sind die Rapperin Shelly Quest, der Autor Julius Vapiano, der Direktor des Museum Ludwig Yilmaz Dziewior und die Kuratorin Aneta Rostkowska. Changierend zwischen Musik und Gespräch stellen sie ausgewählte Songs, Liedfragmente oder Instrumentals vor und ordnet diese aus persönlicher, musikhistorischer und/oder politischer Sicht ein.

Musician, producer and designer SHELLY QUEST is Artist-in-Residence at the ADKDW's Participatory Residency Program in Cologne. To strengthen the cultural participation of socially marginalized groups, the Academy of the Arts of the World 2021 launched the program, which explores new forms of collaboration and is particularly aimed at q***r persons of color.

In collaboration with the Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler / Jugendfreizeitwerk Köln e.V., Shelly Quest will develop a participatory program for young people from the north of Cologne in the coming months. From now on you can follow regular insights into the project here!

Die Musikerin, Produzentin und Designerin Shelly Quest ist Artist-in-Residence im Rahmen des Participatory Residency Program der ADKDW in Köln. Um die kulturelle Teilhabe gesellschaftlich marginalisierter Gruppen zu stärken, hat die Akademie der Künste der Welt 2021 das Programm ins Leben gerufen, das neue Formen der Zusammenarbeit erkundet und sich insbesondere an q***re Personen of Color richtet.

Accompanying the exhibition 'Here and Now at Museum Ludwig Köln 'Anticolonial Interventions', the next part of our DSP seminar series will take place on 12 01 - Paloma Ayala will be our guest.

The visual artist Paloma Ayala deals in her work, among other things, with the investigation of social and ecological interactions and the interweaving of personal or fictional stories with political conditions and the environment. She will create clay figures for visitors to touch, which will be continuously expanded and changed during the exhibition. In this way, institutional processes not only become visible, but can also be haptically comprehended.

Die bildende Künstlerin Paloma Ayala beschäftigt sich in ihrer Arbeit unter anderem mit der Untersuchung von sozialen und ökologischen Wechselwirkungen und der Verflechtung von persönlichen oder fiktiven Geschichten mit politischen Verhältnissen und der Umwelt. Sie wird für die Besucher*innen Tonfiguren zum Anfassen herstellen, die während der Ausstellungslaufzeit fortlaufend erweitert und verändert werden. So werden institutionelle Prozesse nicht nur sichtbar, sondern können auch haptisch nachvollzogen werden.

| Review: ADKDW Highlights 2022 |

Accompanying the exhibition „Here and Now at Museum Ludwig Köln. Anticolonial Interventions“ our DSP seminar series took place, in which the artists Pável Aguilar, Adriana Dominguez and Paula Baeza Pailamilla opened up other perspectives of knowledge on the museum‘s permanent collection.

Which Latin American artists can be found in the collection? How do artists reproduce the exoticizing view of the global South? Which works need to be critically questioned, which offer counter-models? Eurocentric and institutionalized perspectives of knowledge were deconstructed and made accessible via new sensual forms of education.

The DSP seminar will continue in January: On 12 01 the visual artist Paloma Ayala will create clay figures for the visitors to touch, which then will be continuously modified and expanded for the duration of the exhibition. In this way, institutional processes not only become visible but can also be haptically reconstructed.

Begleitend zu der Ausstellung "Hier und Jetzt im Museum Ludwig. Antikoloniale Interventionen" fand unsere DSP-Seminarreihe statt, in der die Künstlerinnen Pável Aguilar, Adriana Dominguez und Paula Baeza Pailamilla andere Wissensperspektiven auf die ständige Sammlung des Museums eröffneten.

Welche lateinamerikanischen Künstler*innen findet man in der Sammlung? Wie reproduzieren Künstler*innen den exotisierenden Blick auf den globalen Süden? Welche Werke gilt es kritisch zu hinterfragen, welche bieten Gegenmodelle an? Eurozentrische und institutionalisierte Wissensperspektiven werden dekonstruiert und über neue sinnliche Vermittlungsformen zugänglich gemacht.

Das DSP-Seminar wird im Januar fortgesetzt. Die bildende Künstlerin Paloma Ayala wird am 12 01 für die Besucher*innen Tonfiguren zum Anfassen herstellen, die während der Ausstellungslaufzeit fortlaufend erweitert und verändert werden. So werden institutionelle Prozesse nicht nur sichtbar, sondern können auch haptisch nachvollzogen werden.

From November 2022 Aimar Arriola, Nancy Garín and Antoine Silvestre were guests in Cologne as Artists-in-Residence. Made possible by the kind support of the DAAD's Berlin Artists' Program they dedicated their research to investigating the cultural and social dimensions of the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis.

In the 1990s, a new combination therapy brought a breakthrough in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. By sharing personal experiences and local stories in two rounds of discussions, they explored this complex period of Germany and the political management of the pandemic, particularly with regard to Cologne.

Ab November 2022 waren Aimar Arriola, Nancy Garín und Antoine Silvestre als Artists-in-Residence zu Gast in Köln. Ermöglicht durch die freundliche Unterstützung des Berliner Künstlerprogramms des DAAD widmeten sie ihren Forschungsaufenthalt der Recherche zu kulturellen und sozialen Dimensionen der anhaltenden HIV/AIDS-Krise.

In den neunziger Jahren brachte eine neue Kombinationstherapie den Durchbruch in der Behandlung von HIV/AIDS. Durch den Austausch von persönlichen Erfahrungen und lokalen Geschichten in zwei Gesprächsrunden wurde diese komplexe Periode Deutschlands und die politische Bewältigung der Pandemie insbesondere mit Blick auf Köln erforscht.

| Review: ADKDW Highlights 2022 |

As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Academy of the Arts of the World, the ADKDW Studio opened in October. ADKDW's new media hub serves as an event venue as well as a broadcasting and recording studio for video and audio productions.

The artistic centerpiece of the 10 YEARS ADKDW anniversary event was the performance "Sleep Disorder" by the artist collective CHEAP and the band Xiu Xiu. Created as a "durational experience," it arose as a multidisciplinary presentation dedicated to the themes of the body, production, division of labor, and global networking.

Im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten des 10-jährigen Jubiläums der Akademie der Künste der Welt eröffnete im Oktober das ADKDW Studio. Die neue Medienschaltzentrale der ADKDW dient als Veranstaltungsort sowie als Broadcasting- und Aufnahmestudio für Video und Audioproduktionen.

Den künstlerischen Mittelpunkt der Jubiläums-Veranstaltung 10 YEARS ADKDW bildete die Performance „Sleep Disorder“ des Künstler*innenkollektivs CHEAP und der Band Xiu Xiu. Angelegt als „durational Experience“ entstand eine multidisziplinäre Präsentation, die sich den Themen Körper, Produktion, Arbeitsteilung und globale Vernetzung widmete.

In September, Danielle Almeida presented songs and rhythms of black Latin American women singers of the 20th century in a live concert.

In her research as well as in her musical work, Danielle Almeida is dedicated to making visible and remembering black women singers. What is special about her didactic concerts is that she complements the sensual experience of music with narratives, thus revealing new musical references and non-hegemonic narratives in music history.

Im September präsentierte Danielle Almeida in einem Livekonzert Lieder und Rhythmen schwarzer lateinamerikanischer Sängerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts.

In ihrer Forschung sowie in ihrer musikalischen Arbeit widmet sich Danielle Almeida der Sichtbarmachung und Erinnerung an schwarze Sängerinnen. Das Besondere an ihren didaktischen Konzerten ist, dass sie die sinnliche Erfahrung von Musik durch Erzählungen ergänzt und dadurch neue musikalische Referenzen und nicht-hegemoniale Narrative in der Musikgeschichte aufzeigt.

As part of the Participatory Residency Program by ADKDW, Demask_clgn and In-Haus e.V., artist and activist Jordan Chanetsa created a program for and with the local QT*BI*POC community. Open Mics, which she launched at Pflanzstelle Kalk and Democracy Space, opened up a space for QT*I*BIPoC artists to perform their first shows, poetry, music, and short stories.

The Participatory Residency Program will be continued in 2023/24: In cooperation with the Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler, a participatory program for young people from the north of Cologne is being created.

At what point is it acceptable to use counter-violence against sexist, racist, extractivist or economic forms of violence? In the discourse series “On Violence”, together with HAU Hebbel am Ufer, we explored the question of what it means to talk about violence at the beginning of the 21st century.
In a series of lectures and talks, visible and invisible, institutional and structural forms of violence were discussed and concepts such as self-defense, anti-colonial violence, revolutionary violence, hate speech or symbolic violence were addressed. Guest speakers were Elsa Dorlin, Stefano Harney & Fred Moten, Maurizio Lazzarato, Daniel Loick & Vanessa E. Thompson. Ab wann ist es zulässig, gegen sexistische, rassistische, extraktivistische oder ökonomische Gewaltformen Gegengewalt auszuüben? In der Diskursreihe On Violence sind wir gemeinsam mit dem HAU Hebbel am Ufer der Frage nachgegangen, was es bedeutet, zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts über Gewalt zu sprechen.

In einer Reihe von Vorträgen und Gesprächen wurden sichtbare und unsichtbare, institutionelle und strukturelle Formen von Gewalt diskutiert und Begriffe wie Selbstverteidigung, antikoloniale Gewalt, revolutionäre Gewalt, Hassrede oder symbolische Gewalt thematisiert. | Review: ADKDW Highlights 2022 |

The pictograms in the "Potosí-Prinzip Archiv" were designed by Andreas Siekmann and refer to the Cologne Progressives, an anarcho-syndicalist group of artists from the 1920s and 30s.

As part of the Decolonial Studies Program, Andreas Siekmann provided insights into his pictographic works and shared his enthusiasm for the Cologne Progressives' principle of representation, which is based on basic geometric shapes, cuts, and color and surface inversions.

Siekmann's pictograms are also represented in the anthology accompanying the exhibition (published by ). The anthology is a collection of historical and contemporary sources, interviews, essays, poems, manifestos, and images. It consists of 36 booklets grouped into four volumes. Its themes are: Extractivism, Labor, Debt, Inquisition, Machine Capitalism, and Decolonization Practices.

Die Piktogramme im „Potosí-Prinzip Archiv“ wurden entworfen von Andreas Siekmann und nehmen Bezug auf die Kölner Progressiven, eine anarchosyndikale Künstlergruppe aus den 1920er und 30er Jahren.

Im Rahmen des Dekolonialen Studienprogramms gab Andreas Siekmann Einblicke in seine piktografischen Arbeiten und teilte seine Begeisterung für das Darstellungsprinzip der Kölner Progressiven, das auf geometrischen Grundformen, Schnitten, Farb- und Flächenumkehrungen basiert.

Auch im Sammelband zur Ausstellung (erschienen bei ), sind Siekmanns Piktogramme vertreten. Das Konvolut ist eine Sammlung von historischen und zeitgenössischen Quellen, Interviews, Essays, Gedichten, Manifesten und Bildern. Es besteht aus 36 Broschüren, die in vier Bände gefasst sind. Seine Themen sind: Extraktivismus, Arbeit, Schulden, Inquisition, Maschinenkapitalismus und Dekolonisierungspraktiken.

| Review: ADKDW Highlights 2022 |

From April 2022, the exhibition project "Potosí Principle - Archive" explored the question of where the principle of global exploitation can be found today.

The term "Potosí Principle" refers to the persistence of the extractivist logic that began with the conquest of South America. With their exhibition "The Potosí Principle," Alice Creischer and Andreas Siekmann explored this through colonial baroque paintings and current works by contemporary artists. It became a milestone in the postcolonial questioning of the origin of modernity and the function of art in it. The "Potosí Principle - Archive" in the Academyspace continued this theme and, as in a reading room, invited visitors to engage with the topics of decolonization, extractivism, inquisition, and capitalism on their own.

Ab April 2022 ging das Ausstellungsprojekt "Potosí-Prinzip – Archiv" der Frage nach, wo heute das Prinzip der globalen Ausbeutung zu finden ist.

Der Begriff „Potosí Prinzip“ verweist auf das Andauern der extraktivistischen Logik, die mit der Eroberung Südamerikas begann. Mit ihrer Ausstellung "Das Potosí Prinzip" erörterten Alice Creischer rund Andreas Siekmann dies anhand kolonialer Barockbilder und aktuellen Werken gegenwärtiger Künstler*innen. Sie wurde zu einem Meilenstein in der postkolonialen Hinterfragung des Ursprungs der Moderne und der Funktion der Kunst darin. Das "Potosí-Prinzip – Archiv“ im Academyspace führte diese Thematik fort und lud wie in einem Lesesaal zur eigenen Auseinandersetzung mit den Themenfeldern Dekolonisierung, Extraktivismus, Inquisition und Kapitalismus ein.

In March 2022, Chimurenga united a multitude of voices from across Africa and the diaspora for their "Liberation Radio."

The program intended to be a free, innovative forum for political reflection on Africa by Africans and is part of an ongoing inquiry into knowledge production that emerges from African soundscapes. For one week, conversations and music on the history of the anti-colonial struggle in Southern Africa were streamed live from the Pan African Space Station in Cape Town to explore the role that radio, music and creative arts have played in the African liberation struggle.

Im März 2022 vereinten Chimurenga für ihr „Liberation Radio“ eine Vielzahl von Stimmen aus ganz Afrika und der Diaspora.

Das Programm verstand sich als freies, innovatives Forum für politische Reflexion über Afrika von Afrikaner*innen und ist Teil einer andauernden Untersuchung zur Wissensproduktion, die aus afrikanischen Klangwelten entsteht. Eine Woche lang wurden Gespräche und Musik zur Geschichte des antikolonialen Kampfes im südlichen Afrika live aus der Pan African Space Station in Kapstadt gestreamt, um zu untersuchen, welche Rolle Radio, Musik und kreative Kunst im afrikanischen Befreiungskampf gespielt haben.

Elle Fierce (they/them) was the first artist to create their own artistic program for the QT*I*BI*PoC community in Cologne as part of the Participatory Residency Program together with In-Haus e.V. and Demask_clgn.

In February 2022 Elle Fierce presented "2B" - an experimental film that asks the questions “When are we performing?” & “What does it mean to take space?” Created with an all QT*-BI*PoC team, these questions are explored from a QT*-BI*PoC perspective, particularly in relation to existing within a White cisgendered majority, European country. The Participatory Residency Program will be continued in 2023/24: In cooperation with the Jugendwerkstatt Chorweiler, a participatory program for young people from the north of Cologne is being created.

| Review: ADKDW Highlights 2022 |

With the Decolonial Studies Program (DSP), a series of events started in spring 2022, which invites you to an in-depth engagement with structural colonialism and the reappraisal of German colonial history.

In our Reading Group, we read texts by Frantz Fanon, Judith Butler, Elsa Dorlin, and others together with you and deepened the discussion in the DSP seminar with guest lectures on artistic research perspectives. Guest lecturers in the first semester included Alice Creischer, Miguel Hilari, Tobias Morawski, Joanne Rodriguez, Stephan Mörsch, Andreas Siekmann.

The Decolonial Studies Program will also continue in 2023 - we expect to start the next semester in April. The events are free of charge and open to everyone interested. Registration and more info at [email protected].

Mit dem Dekolonialen Studienprogramm (DSP) startete im Frühjahr 2022 eine Veranstaltungsreihe, die zur eingehenden Beschäftigung mit strukturellem Kolonialismus und der Aufarbeitung der deutschen Kolonialgeschichte einlädt.

In unserer Reading Group haben wir gemeinsam mit Euch Texte von Frantz Fanon, Judith Butler, Elsa Dorlin u.a. gelesen und die Diskussion im DSP-Seminar anhand von Gastvorträgen zu künstlerischen Forschungsperspektiven vertieft. Zu Gast als Vortragende waren im ersten Semester u.a. Alice Creischer, Miguel Hilari, Tobias Morawski, Joanne Rodriguez, Stephan Mörsch, Andreas Siekmann.

MATTERS OF TACTILITY: REVISITING CHARLOTTE POSENENSKE

with ALEXIS LOWRY, ASTRID WEGE moderated by DIRK HILDEBRANDT By the late 1960s, Charlotte Posenenske was already creating works that were characterized by their seriality, reproducibility, and accessibility. Her objects and sculptures were and are affordable, interactive, tactile, unlimited, unsigned, and last but not least, playful and ephemeral. Her manifesto, published at the beginning of 1968, is as lucidly programmatic as it is an emphatic document of the looming break with art: “I find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that art cannot contribute anything to the solution of pressing social problems.” Consistently, this break followed in the same year at the height of her artistic productivity. The question today is how – on a curatorial and artistic level – to approach an artist who theoretically defined her work so precisely, without falling prey to the fascination of this exact theoretical brilliance? How can she be placed into the context of the 1960s without obliterating her peculiarity? And why does she still and increasingly seem so “astonishingly contemporary” (Paul Maenz)? Even before Posenenske’s so-called ‘rediscovery’ at documenta 12 (2007), Astrid Wege curated a retrospective of her work in 2005. Alexis Lowry is co-curator of the widely acclaimed exhibition Charlotte Posenenske: Work in Progress (2019) and is curating another exhibition on Posenenske as part of her residency at Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau. with MADHUSREE DUTTA, IMAN MERSAL, ALA YOUNIS Madhusree Dutta, curator and artistic director of the ADKDW, speaks with Ala Younis, artist and co-curator of the exhibition HANDS: an art campaign, and the poet Iman Mersal about their collaboratively developed video installation Hands: dismemberance. The work serves as a manifesto for the whole exhibition project: Iman Mersal writes on how broken, aged, deformed and replaced memories of solidarity can appear. Juxtaposed over drawings that imagine body parts as landscape, the video borrows gestures from Baghdad’s Liberty Monument (1961) made by Jewad Selim (1919–1961). Is it not paradoxical that the cultural nature of hands, characterized by a diversity of practices and meanings, is at risk of atrophy and being marginalized due to the current pandemic? 🔹Waxman jest pierwszą osobą zaproszoną na rezydencję artystyczną w ramach inauguracyjnej edycji projektu Thinking Through the Museum: A Partnership Approach to Curating Difficult Knowledge in Public, polegającego na zrzeszaniu muzealniczek i muzealników, badaczek i badaczy, osób kuratorskich, artystek i artystów oraz członkiń i członków marginalizowanych społeczności.

🔹Powstała w ten sposób wspólnota poszukuje nowych form zaangażowania poprzez trudną naukę z historii przemocy i konfliktu. Gender Diasporist - interdyscyplinarny projekt, który Waxman przedstawi podczas swojego pobytu w Polsce - obnaża absurd i opresyjność prawa wobec jednostki oraz rozkłada na czynniki pierwsze sposób postrzegania ciała przez system państwowy.

👤W ramach projektu Waxman, jako otwarcie transpłciowa osoba polsko-żydowskiego pochodzenia, aplikuje o polskie obywatelstwo, tym samym czyniąc postkolonialny gest dekonstruujący prawo powrotu (heb. חוק השבות , chok ha-szwut) oraz wspiera społeczność LGBTQIAP+ i ruch feministyczny w Polsce.

🔹By dokonać korekty płci na drodze prawnej w Polsce, trzeba - wykorzystując lukę w Kodeksie Cywilnym - pozwać swoich rodziców oraz przejść przez skomplikowany i kosztowny proces sądowy, by “skorygować” swój akt urodzenia. Poprzez mechanizmy władzy podważana jest w ten sposób podmiotowość i zdolność do autonomicznego nazywania i przeżywania własnej tożsamości płciowej, a rodzice uznani są za winnych popełnienia błędu, który w rzeczywistości nigdy nie mógł się wydarzyć. Proces ten odmawia słuszności zarówno postrzeganiu płci jako płynnej i spektralnej, jak i istnieniu transpłciowych i niebinarnych osób w ogóle, umacniając binarny podział płci.

👤Waxman, osoba innej płci niż przypisana przy urodzeniu, chce podważyć słuszność tego prawa poprzez stworzenie precedensu i uzyskanie obywatelstwa jako osoba transpłciowa z właściwym oznaczeniem płci wpisanym w dokumentach.

🔹W projekcie Gender Diasporist artystx korzysta z tego, co nazywa “transpłciową wiedzą”, łącząc różne media i dziedziny wiedzy, by ukazać rozmaite aspekty wykluczenia, migracji, uchodźstwa i wpływu ingerencji granic pańswowych w ludzkie ciała.

📄Narracja jest prowadzona przy użyciu dokumentacji procesu prawnego Waxmana, fotografii, wideo, choreografii, śpiewu, opowieści oraz poszukiwań historycznych. Podczas tej rezydencji,
artystx włączy do projektu również perpektywę posthumanistyczną, tworząc tusz z lokalnych roślin i minerałów. Określa ten dziki tusz mianem “efmerycznej potencjalności”.

🔹Na podstawie rodzinnych dokumentów, podąża śladem drogi ucieczki własnej matki i innych członków rodziny z Polski w 1939 roku. Właśnie z tych terenów pozyska materiały, które jednocześnie można uważać za świadków bądź świadkinie wydarzeń i łączników bądź łączniczki ze współczesną Polską rzeczywistością.

👉🏻 Pobyt Tobarona Waxmana w Polsce to wynik współpracy trzech instytucji: Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich POLIN, Teatru Powszechnego z Warszawy oraz Stowarzyszenia FestivALT z Krakowa. Podczas rezydencji Waxman zrealizuje szereg działań artystycznych w Krakowie i w Warszawie.

👉🏻 W Krakowie, podczas FestivALTu (24 czerwca – 3 lipca), Tobaron Waxman zaprosi publiczność do współtworzenia Gender Diasporist w przestrzeni Żydowskiego Stowarzyszenia Czulent, w tym pracy choreograficznej i tworzenia naturalnych tuszy z lokalnych roślin i minerałów.

👥 W swojej twórczości Waxman mierzy się z fundamentalnymi kwestiami dotyczącymi narodu, płci i rasy, za pomocą siatki pojęć i obrazowania właściwych kulturze żydowskiej. Waxman swoją pracą prowadzi polemiczną narrację o tożsamości, wplatając w nią wątki żydowskich korzeni, migracji i bezdomności, solidarności z Palestyną oraz problemu granic, zarówno w kontekście etniczności, cielesności, jak i własnych doświadczeń jako osoba transpłciowa.

🏳️‍🌈W 2013 roku, z inicjatywy Tobarona Waxmana, powstało The Intergenerational LGBT Artist Residency. Od 2017 roku prowadzi archiwum Trans Collection w ramach The ArQuives, największego niezależnego archiwum kultury LGBTQ+ na świecie.

🔷🔹Introducing: Tobaron Waxman (Toronto / Lenapehoking) – an interdisciplinary artist and curator who sings.

🔹Waxman is the inaugural Artist in Residence as part of Thinking Through the Museum: A Partnership Approach to Curating Difficult Knowledge in Public (TTTM), a project bringing together museum practitioners, academic researchers, curators, artists and community members to seek new terms of engagement for learning from histories of violence and conflict.

🔹Tobaron Waxman’s Gender Diasporist is an interdisciplinary project which outlines the absurdity of the oppressive gender laws and unpacks the relationship of the state to the gendered body. Through Gender Diasporist, Waxman makes both a decolonial gesture, a refusal of the ‘right of return’ and an act of solidarity with feminists and LGBTQ+ allies and activists in Poland.

👤Waxman will present excerpts of their project Gender Diasporist; examining ways in which the state determines the parameters of our bodies, focussing on the local example of Polish ‘gender confirmation’ law. As a live art intervention, Waxman applied for Polish citizenship as an out trans person of Polish-Jewish heritage.

🔹In Poland, in order to legally confirm one’s gender identity, a trans person is required to sue their parents and go through a complex and costly judicial process. In this way, the state can
refuse the idea that gender exists on a spectrum, and can refuse the existence of trans and nonbinary people in general. Rather, the parents are seen as having made a mistake, and through their culpability, the gender binary can be reinforced whatever the outcome of the case, while the state denies body sovereignty.

👤Using what Waxman calls ‘transsexual knowledge’ to interrogate how borders and concepts of citizenship make moral and ethical claims on our bodies, Gender Diasporist incorporates documentation of Waxman’s legal process of application for Polish citizenship, in combination with photography, video, choreography and vocal performance.

📄Waxman’s archival research this residency engages historical botany and environmental memory to create natural inks from locally foraged minerals and plants. Waxman considers these site specific inks “ephemeral potencies”. Using the archive of their family immigration documents, Gender Diasporist traces the escape trajectory of Waxman’s mother, and other relatives, while developing new relationships to the Poland of the present.

👉🏻 The TTTM artist residency is the result of the cooperation of three institutions: The Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Powszechny Theater of Warsaw and FestivALT Association in Krakow. During the residency, Tobaron Waxman will divide their time between Warsaw and Krakow, taking part in numerous cultural events.

👉🏻 In Krakow, during FestivALT (24th June – 3rd July), Waxman invite the public to visit and participate in their laboratory at Żydowskie Stowarzyszenie Czulent, to take part in the
creative process of generating the Gender Diasporist project, including choreographic work and making natural inks from locally foraged minerals and plants.

👉🏻 Waxman will also join the Long Table event – a facilitated dialogue where the audience is welcome to become participants, organized by FestivALT together with the The Signs of Equality Federation (Federacja Znaki Równości). With guests from fields including history, art, law, and culture, the public is invited to take a seat at the Long Table and unpack Polish gender confirmation law from multiple angles.

👉🏻 In Warsaw, Waxman will take part in the inaugural Thinking Through the Museum international conference, in which they will present and discuss their research with local Polish artists, international curators and theorists. Waxman will continue their research at the archives of Polin Museum while developing Gender Diasporist. Excerpts of this work in progress will be shared with the public on July 9, 2022 at POLIN Museum of the History of
Polish Jews.

👥 Tobaron Waxman articulate a Jewish image vocabulary to grapple with questions of gender, nation and the state, as well as with questions of Semitic identity, migrancy and houselessness, solidarity with Palestine, and issues of border and embodiment, such as gender and racial passing.

🏳️‍🌈In 2013, Waxman founded The Intergenerational LGBT Artist Residency, and since 2017 Waxman have led the Trans Collections at The ArQuives, the largest independent LGBTQ+ archive in the world.
