Immer wieder herzzerreißend😭

The photo first appeared in the The Vidette-Messenger of Valparaiso, Indiana on August 5, 1948. The children looked posed and a bit confused as their pregnant mother hides her face from the photographer.( this is not staged , wish it was )

The caption read: “A big ‘For Sale’ sign in a Chicago yard mutely tells the tragic story of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chalifoux, who face eviction from their apartment. With no place to turn, the jobless coal truck driver and his wife decide to sell their four children. Mrs. Lucille Chalifoux turns her head from camera above while her children stare wonderingly. On the top step are Lana, 6, and Rae, 5. Below are Milton, 4, and Sue Ellen, 2”.

Family members accused the mother of being paid to stage the photo, which may have been part of the story, but unfortunately, she was dead serious about selling her children. Within two years all of the children pictures, as well as the baby she was carrying at the time, were sold off to different homes.
RaeAnn Mills, and her brother Milton were sold to the Zoeteman family on August 27, 1950. Their names were changed to Beverly and Kenneth, and although their birth mother’s situation was dire, their new home wasn’t much of salvation.

They were often chained up in a barn and forced to work long hours in the field. Milton remembers being called a “slave” by his new father figure, a label he accepted at the time because he didn’t understand what it meant.

Although it seems that RaeAnn and Milton were never officially adopted by their abusers, their brother David, who was in his mother’s womb at the time of the photograph, was legally adopted by Harry and Luella McDaniel, who only lived a few miles away.

David, who says his adoptive parents were strict but loving and supportive, remembers riding out on his bike to see his siblings and unchaining them before going back home.

RaeAnn left home at 17, shortly after undergoing a brutally traumatic situation. As a young teen, she was kidnapped and raped, which resulted in a pregnancy. She was sent away to a home for pregnant girls and had her baby adopted when she returned.

As Milton grew older, he reacted to the beatings, starving, and other abuses with violent rages. A judge deemed him a menace to society, and he spent a number of years in a mental hospital after being forced to choose between that and a reformatory (a juvenile detention center).

The siblings didn’t know what happened with Lana and Sue Ellen, however, years later they were able to reconnect with them via social media. Lana had died in 1998 of cancer, but Sue Ellen Chalifoux was still alive. Sue Ellen was raised not far from her original home, growing up in Chicago’s East Side neighborhood. Her opinion about her biological mother: “She needs to be in hell burning”.

The woman in the photograph remarried after selling/giving away her five children and had four more daughters. When her other children eventually came to see her, she’s described as completely lacking love for her estranged children, or having any regret for letting them go.

David McDaniel defended his mother’s coldness as evidence of a different, hardscrabble world. “As soon as my mom saw me, she said, ‘You look just like your father’”, McDaniel said. “She never apologized. Back then, it was survival. Who are we to judge? We’re all human beings. We all make mistakes. She could’ve been thinking about the children. Didn’t want them to die”. Milton had a different perspective on the situation: “My birth mother, she never did love me. She didn’t apologize for selling me. She hated me so much that she didn’t care

When my mom was cleaning out her house over 23 years ago to sell it, I wasn't very sympathetic over her attachments to things. I would go over on weekends to help her and we would go through things, things for a yard sale, things to donate, things to throw away. I would usually get upset over how long it was taking her to decide. For instance, we were going through kitchen cabinets and she spent 20 minutes looking at an iron kettle with a lid. Finally I said,

“Mom, at this rate it is going to take us another 2 years.”

She told me that her mother used to make meals in that kettle and leave them at doorsteps of neighbors during the depression, mom would deliver them, and then they would reappear back to her with an apron, or a wood carving, something in return for the meal. I realized that everything that my mom was going through was really a reliving of her life.

If you are reading this and are under the age of 60, you wont get it. You haven't lived long enough. Most of you have not had to move your parents into a nursing home, or emptied their home. You haven't lived long enough to realize that the hours you spend picking out the right cabinets, or the perfect tile will not be what matters in the later years. It will be the handmade toothbrush holder, or a picture that you got on vacation.

So, if your parents are downsizing, and moving to smaller places, or selling a home, give your mom and even your dad a break. Those things that you don't understand why they can’t just pitch, and why you think you know what needs to be tossed or saved, give them a little time to make their decisions. They are saying goodbye to their past, and realizing that they are getting ready for their end of life, while you are beginning your life.

As I have been going through things, its amazing just how hard it is to get rid of objects. But, life goes on, and you realize they are just things, but sometimes things comfort us. So give your parents or grandmparents a break. Listen to their stories, because in 40 years, when you are going through those boxes and the memories come back, it will be hard to get rid of those plastic champagne flutes that you and your late husband used at a New Years party 40 years ago. You will think nothing of the tile or the light fixtures that were so important then.

As happy as they are for you, and as much as they love you, you just don't have a clue until it happens to you and then you will remember how you rushed them, and it will make you sad, especially if they are already gone and you cant say I’m sorry, I didn’t get it.

Das größte Geschenk, was wir unseren Kindern machen können, ist unsere ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit!

“Listen earnestly to anything
your children want to tell you,
no matter what. If you don't
listen eagerly to the little stuff
when they are little, they won't
tell you the big stuff when they
are big, because to them all of it
has always been big stuff.”

Women History is always someone’s personal history. I’m grateful for this one having been shared with me. Your thoughts about this woman’s perspective? (jkl)

“This is the last photo of my mother, Irena, age 17, in 1940 - before the Russians marched into her land (present day Ukraine) and locked her and thousands of others in a cattle train to Siberia.

“Twenty five years later, my mother and I were at a cocktail party near London, talking to two Russian men. When they discovered my mother had been to Russia, they asked "How did you travel there?"

"By train," she replied.

"And did you like the countryside?"

"Yes," my mother replied, "it was beautiful."

“As soon as the Russian men had moved on to speak with others, I spoke to my mother with all the pent-up anger I had with Russia for having taken my mother prisoner all those years ago. "Why didn't you tell those two Russians men that you couldn't see the countryside, because for 13 days you were a prisoner in a cattle car that had no windows?"

"Richard," she said, looking me in the eye, "those two men did not lock me in that cattle car."

"In positive psychology, a flow state, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity."

At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, walked through the park in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favourite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.
Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.
The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."
Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.
Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin.
"It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." the little girl hugged the new doll and brought her happy home.
A year later Kafka died.
Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:
"Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."

In early January 1943, Dutch Jewish diving champion Bob Denneboom went in to hiding at the home of his close friend and gymnastics teacher, Jan Kasper Klein.

As the Germans stepped up the deportation of Dutch Jews, Jan gradually took in Denneboom’s entire family. Soon after, there were 17 Jews living in the small house, which had a dedicated hiding space under the roof. In order to relieve the overcrowding, 4 or 5 of the Jewish refugees would occasionally stay with Jan’s mother.

On 16 February 1944, the Germans raided both Klein households. Everyone was arrested except for Bob Denneboom, who managed to escape. Of the 19 people arrested, only 5 survived the camps, including Jan and his mother, and 3 Jewish refugees.

In 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Kasper Klein as Righteous Among the Nations.

🌹In 1950 Ella Fitzgerald was not allowed to perform at Hollywood's most popular nightclub, The Mocambo, due to her race and body size. Marilyn Monroe was a big fan of hers so she called the owner of the club and told him that if he allowed her to be near Ella, she would be there every night, which would benefit him with the amount of press it would attract. He agreed and Monroe was present every night in the front row, which guaranteed great press coverage.

Ella Fitzgerald said: "After that, I never had to play any small club again. Marilyn was a rare woman, ahead of her time and she didn't even realize it."
