Under the title FRICTI9NS, the 9th edition of the Performance Garten goes to the vibrating contact zone of performance and moving image. Spatially, it transplants itself into the archetypal space of the early moving image, the cinema. In this way, the project reacts on the one hand to traditional lines of time-based media in performance art, and on the other hand to newly appropriated artistic modes of production by performers in the home office, as well as to our changed perception of the cinema space, which we experience once again in a pandemic-trained gaze as an intimate place of communality and bubble of physical presence.
In terms of motif, the project entitled FRICTI9NS takes up the phenomenon of friction, which is to be interpreted not only physically, but in particular in its social, political and ecological dimensions. Together with cultural theorist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, we understand friction as a "zone of awkward engagement", as unequal, unstable and creative interaction across differences. At the same time, the title FRICTI9NS opens the ways to the fictional, to the polyphony of narratives and stories in the plural.
A one-day event with up to nine artistic positions is planned. Works of different medialities will be shown - from video works to performative-intervening actions. The project is site-specific in that the works performatively address the space of the cinema and its choreographies on different channels. In this way, the location and the works shown enter into equally productive frictional relationships as the media of performance and video.
The artists invited on the basis of the Open Call will receive an expense allowance and - in the case of a live performance - a travel allowance for travel to and from the venue. Accommodation costs cannot be covered.
