Liebe Jazzfreunde

Ein ereignisreiches aber auch sehr forderndes Jahr neigt sich dem Ende zu.
Neben der Renovierung und dem Umbau des Clubraumes konnten mehr als 15 Studioproduktionen erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden. Seit letzten September konnten wir den Clubbetrieb wieder aufnehmen und seitdem über 30 Konzerte durchführen. Für das neue Jahr steht wieder ein tolles Programm an mit vielen tollen Bands aus aller Welt. Die stilistische Palette reicht von Avantgarde über Mainstream bis hin zu Singer-Songwriter – wir werden im kommenden Jahr außerdem wieder viele Konzerte aufzeichnen und streamen.
Herzlichen Dank an alle, die den Umbau unterstützt haben und die Konzerte besucht haben.

Wenn ihr ein tolles, neues Projekt am Start habt und im Salon De Jazz spielen wollt, kommt direkt zu einem der Konzerte und sprecht uns an oder schreibt eine email an: [email protected]

Montags wird es weiterhin die Reihe Hammond Organ Jazz geben, die immer in einer Jam Session mündet. Hierzu sind alle Musiker herzlich eingeladen.

Unser Team bestehend aus Jabul, Martin, Cage und Clemens, freut sich schon sehr Euch bald wiederzusehen.

21.12.2022 IN DULCI JUBILO 20h
About 10 years ago i got the idea to arrange Christmas songs for jazz piano trio. Melodies that over the years created a deep emotional impact on me not necessarily as a listener unable to escape the musical environment during christmas time but as an active musician playing church organ throughout my teenage years. In fact playing church organ was my first encounter with improvised music doing preludes for chorals. Later i performed the ever growing number of arrangements with my trio once a year in eary december at „salon de jazz“ – and those concerts already have become a tradition. This year the time has come to put them on CD! Many thanks to Fabian, Stefan, Bodek, Birgit and my alter egos Chrstoph, Tobias, Max and Theo for supporting this heart project and let the music come to life! Enjoy listening to my interpretations of 7 old european chorals and 2 newer american christmas songs. And if you should read this and December 24th is close: Merry Christmas!

25.11.2022 MORITZ PREISLER TRIO 20h
Das Moritz Preisler Trio mit Moritz Preisler am Klavier, David Helm am Kontrabass und Jan Philipp am Schlagzeug arbeitet seit Mai 2017 zusammen.
Ausgangspunkt sind die Kompositionen des Namensgebers, die im Kollektiv erarbeitet, bearbeitet und arrangiert werden. Die Band verbindet dabei vor Allem Elemente aus Jazz, Improvisierter Musik, Neuer, z.B. serieller Musik sowie spätromantischer und moderner klassischer Musik.
Das Ergebnis ist eine eigenwillige, mitreißende, surreale und bizarr schöne Klangkunst, die sich eigentlich nur fassen lässt, wenn man sie live im Moment ihrer Entstehung hört.
Das Debüt-Album „Raureif“ ist am 22. Februar 2022 bei Klaeng Records erschienen und wurde von der Presse hoch gelobt.

XY Quartet can be considered by all means a representative band of the new Italian Jazz world. The group, established in 2011, looks back upon 3 CD (Idea F, XY, Orbite printed by nusica.org), concerts by many of the major Italian Festivals and a growing artistic activity abroad. The band has achieved numerous critical and public acclaims, has been rewarded as second best Italian group by Musica Jazz magazine in 2014 and 2017 and to its credit lists also interviews with specialised periodicals and a good number of positive reviews in Italy and abroad.
XY Quartet stands out live for its strenght and expressive effectiveness with which is able to elaborate musical, originals and innovative, materials maintaining a constant balance between improvisation and composition. Various influences mark the band music: jazz, contemporary, minimalism, electronic, prog, and each of these elements seem to merge into a peculiar and unique language that puts the band on the international spotlight.
The elements of the musical language are taken away from their historical, geographical, social context and projected into another dimension that becomes an hypothetical extraterrestrial future.
During the years XY Quartet has realized different live experiences, one of which is the remarkable multimedia project in collaboration with the video artist Claudio Sichel , not to mention a performance with the science communicator Dario Kubler, both of them dedicated on the theme of the first space explorers.

20.11.2022 KREISBERG MEETS VERAS 20h
The greatest collaborations often are built upon two unique personalities that combine to create something beyond and outside of what the two had achieved individually. When those two musical individuals are like minded, yet possess their own specific sounds and approaches, the results can challenge the two to reach new heights and bring exhilarated audiences along for the ride.

Such is the musical and personal friendship of guitarists Jonathan Kreisberg and Nelson Veras, and their upcoming recording and tours will introduce audiences to a new sound in the world of guitar.

Jonathan Kreisberg is known for combining timeless melodicism and american swing with forward–thinking lines and textures. His music of continues to attract a growing international fan base and influence the next generation of players. He has led his own groups on tours around the world and recorded several critically acclaimed cd’s. He has also played and recorded with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Locke, Lee Konitz, Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier among other Jazz legends as well as performed 20th century works with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.

Nelson Veras has long been one of the guitar world’s great secrets, possessing a unique style based on a mixture of classical guitar techniques, ultra modern jazz lines, classical harmony, and his Brazilian roots. He was „discovered“ by Pat Metheny at age 14 and went on to win numerous awards before he was 19. In 1998, at the age of 20, he was one of the 3 winners of ‘Premio Visa of Brazilian Music’ alongside Hamilton de Hollanda and Andre Mehmari. He has recorded several cd’s of his music and has performed/recorded with Steve Coleman, Michel Petrucciani, Tomasz Stanko, and Manu Kaché among others.

15.11.2022 HINDOL DEB – ESSENCE OF DUALITY 20h
‚Essence of Duality‘ verbindet Jazz mit klassischer indischer Musik. Forschend werden die Grenzen zueinander überschritten um eine ästhetische Verbindung zueinander aufzubauen. Das Hauptinstrument auf dem Album ist die Sitar. Das Ziel dieses Albums ist jedoch die Sitar von im Westen verbreiteten Stereotypen zu befreien, wo sie oft als „exotisch“ wahrgenommen wird.

Als der indische Musiker Hindol Deb 2015 nach Deutschland übersiedelte begann seine Suche nach neuen Klängen und Kompositionsstilen. Er wurde dabei nicht nur mit musikalischen Unterschieden in der europäischen Musik sondern auch mit kulturellen Unterschieden konfrontiert. Das Album ist das Ergebnis des Umgangs mit diesen Herausforderungen und der dadurch entstanden Verschmelzung der Musikstile. In Deutschland widmete Hindol sich dem Studium der Jazz Musik. Durch das gemeinsame Musizieren erlangte er einen intensiven Einblick in die westliche Kultur. Sein experimenteller Kompositionsstil ist geprägt von der Verschmelzung seines Hintergrunds in klassischer indischer Musik die auf Jazz Einflüsse stößt. Sein Ziel dabei ist es, beide Genres auf Augenhöhe zu halten.

„Ich bin mit dem Hören von indischen klassischen Musikern wie Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Bannerji, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar aufgewachsen und fand mich zusammen mit meinem gut ausgebildeten indischen klassischen Hintergrund plötzlich in einem Raum wieder, in dem ich sehr wenig wusste. Ich begann, viele verschiedene Stile europäischer Musik zu hören, von gregorianischen Gesängen, mittelalterlicher Musik über klassische Musik wie Bach und Chopin bis hin zu minimalistischer und Avantgarde-Musik von György Ligeti, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich und anderen, einschließlich atonaler und improvisierter Musik. Dazu viel Jazz und seine Subgenres von Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus u.a.“, erzählt Hindol Deb.

Die Kompositionen haben einen starken polyrhythmischen Inhalt, was sie sowohl interessant als auch herausfordernd für alle Bandmitglieder macht. Indische Modi wurden aufgebrochen und an die Jazzharmonik in den Kompositionen angepasst. Bis auf die Sitar hat das Quartett eine typische Jazz-Besetzung.

„Ich fing an, die Ragas aus der westlichen Perspektive zu betrachten und versuchte, Wendungen und Modulationen in Ragas zu entdecken oder wie man Spannung und Entspannung vom harmonischen Standpunkt aus nutzen kann. Dies führte dazu, dass ich die harmonischen Strukturen in indischen Modi herausfand und mit tonalen Verschiebungen mit kompletter Veränderung des Ragas experimentierte oder sogar den gleichen Raga spielte und dabei das tonale Zentrum veränderte. Poly-rhythmische Strukturen sind ein zentraler Aspekt in der indischen Klassik, die ich bewusst in meine Kompositionen einbauen wollte. Desert Clouds“ und „Essence of Duality“ sind zwei solcher Kompositionen, bei denen man hören kann, dass die Rhythmusgruppe einen anderen Rhythmus spielt.“

With her debut album „Love is yours is mine“ (Unit Records) Kiki Manders creates an enchanting world of expressive nuances. Her compositions, powerful and sensualy soft at the same time, quietly leave a resonance with a greater intuitiv understanding. Electric bass trickling cool and light, resembling that moment at daybreak, just before the dew kisses the grass. The sound of the guitar melancholic and misty. When listening, her voice – sometimes woolly, other times crisp, but never complacent – embraces, melts together with the colors of the music and becomes a potpourri of fantasy and playful originality.

In Kiki’s music is nature and she finds music in nature. The singer takes inspiration from her encounters with nature, she prefers to write music outdoors – where she feels as a free and moving part of everything. Kiki Manders not only understands the dynamics of the natural as a metaphor for her music, but for life in general „. I want to live life like water and wind“. It is not a coinsidence that the only title on the album that isn’t her own composition, Avec le temps by Leo Ferre, picks up on the transience of life thematically and describes it in a most touching way. Some of the ten songs are written in her mother tongue, a dialect of the South of the Netherlands, which additionally makes the diverse album very personal and authentic.

„I play music because I like to listen to music, and when I’m on the bandstand I can play the things I like to hear.“
Jonathan Beshay-jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer-says that there’s no other agenda when his group takes the bandstand. Fortunately for audiences, Beshay likes to hear good music. After many years of performing and listening, the result is an adaptable, energetic, fearlessly hard-swinging sound that pulls from a vast body of musical sources. Beshay has no trouble moving from the street-band wailing of traditional jazz to the intricate post-bop melodies of a Joe Henderson tune. It’s all fair game, “. . . as long as it sounds good!”
In addition to his own musical projects, Beshay has also served as musical director for both Winard Harper and his brother Philip Harper through tours at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, and the Omani Royal Opera House. He also spent time in New Orleans with Delfayo Marsalis, and has performed with many other masters including Anthony Wonsey, Frank Lacy and Rodney Whitaker.

Tobias Hoffmann Quartett

„Mit meinem neuen Quartett erfüllen sich nun gleich zwei lang ersehnte Wünsche. Zum einen mit einer Hammond Orgel zusammen zu spielen, und zum anderen endlich wieder ein Programm zusammen zu stellen, welches ausschließlich aus meinen eigenen Kompositionen besteht. Nachdem ich die letzten Jahre mit meinem Trio in erster Linie als Interpret bekannter Jazz und Pop-Standards in Erscheinung getreten bin (was wir auch weiterhin in dieser Formation tun werden), habe ich zuletzt verstärkt an eigenen Kompositionen gearbeitet und nun auch endlich das Gefühl nicht nur funktionierende Musik schreiben zu können, sondern nun auch ein Stück weit einen eigenen Sound gefunden zu haben. Ich bin sehr glücklich mit der Musik und die Besetzung mit Benny an der Hammond Orgel, Frank am Bass und Jan am Schlagzeug ist wirklich meine Dream Band für diese Stücke. Im September nehmen wir ein Album mit der Musik auf. Im Salon De Jazz feiert die Band nun ihre Live Premiere. Wir freuen uns schon sehr auf das Konzert. “Kreisberg meets Veras” had a blast in Basel! Tonight we hit at Salon De Jazz in Cologne! Tomorrow night at Jazzclub Leipzig!

Gratulation! 7 Kölner Spielstäten und Programme bekamen gestern in Erfurt von Kulturstaatsministerin Claudia Roth den Kulturpreis "Applaus" verliehen:
Für die besten Livemusikprogramme wurden Bumann & SOHN, das Gewölbe und das King Georg ausgezeichnet. Als beste Livemusikspielstätte konnten sich in Köln der Clubbahnhof Köln Ehrenfeld und der Salon De Jazz freuen. Auch in der Kategorie "Beste kleine Spielstätten und Konzertreihen" war Köln vertreten: Die Auszeichnungen in dieser Kategorie gingen an Always Coming Back To You und die Jäzzzeit im Heimathirsch. Superverdient, Ihr seid großartig!
Der jährlich verliehene Musikpreis „Applaus“ des Bundes für unabhängige Musikclubs und Veranstaltungsreihen wurde bereits zum neunten Mal vergeben.
