A delight to bring fresh and provocative work to life. A young but versatile photo-artist directed herself in various postures inspired by Tarot. She didn't hide almost anything. To see the real work & artist come to Kühlhaus Berlin Friday night (Feb 24).

Today was a Big Day: I just got a brand-new print from Magnum Photos NY, part of their initiative Magnum Square Print. Alex Webb shot it 1993 in Havana, Cuba. On the rear-side, a smart statement by Mr. Webb says: "Probably, no photographer has influenced me for as long as Henri Cartier-Bresson. For some 50 years, I've been drawn to his early, pre-war work with its surreal ambiguity. However, ever since I first saw my father's copy of The Decisive Moment in the late 1960s, I've been uneasy with the title. The notion of a 'decisive moment' seems just too pat, too unpoetic for such a complicated vision. Years later, it was gratifying to discover that the original French title was Images a la Sauvette - Images on the Sly - a much humbler notion more in the spirit of his early street photographs, work that embraces the mystery and uncertainty of collaborating with the world. Ít is the photo that takes you, as he once said."

If the year 2014 commemorated a century since the start of WW1, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of Romania's debut in this seminal event. Thus the "Romanian Cultural Institute Berlin" initiated an exhibitional project, bringing a private vintage photo-collection (belonging to Mr. Adrian-Silvan Ionescu) into life and on the walls of their new location on Reinhardtstrasse 14 in Berlin.
"The Great War - Pictures from the Romanian Front 1916-19" is an excellently curated exhibition, with lots of dark stories to discover and reflect on. And the book associated with this impressive collection, available in 3 different languages (En, De & Fr) is a masterpiece. (The show can be visited till September 16, Mon-Fri, 14:00-18:00, Reinhardtstr. 14, 10117 Berlin)

colorloft had the pride to print and mount this show for the "Rumänisches Kulturinstitut Berlin". Thank you!

Photo-artist Jung A Kim, one of last year's discoveries in the photographic fine-art world, has just published her first photo-book with the renowned KEHRER publishing house. The series is called 'Reminiscence' and has already been displayed throughout Europe and Asia. The young artist has prepared an extra limited edition of 100 copies, including the book, a manually laboured case and a fine art print on a special watercolour paper. COLORLOFT had the pleasure to manufacture these prints.
The book launch is scheduled for JULY 16 7pm in the PAVLOV'S DOG gallery in Berlin. Join us on this occasion and discover the one and only: JUNG A KIM.

Your Favorite Photoshop Experts Open Photoshop 1.0

It was back in 1990 when everything started for us - digital photographers, photo-editors, designers, printers,...- you guessed, Photoshop 1.0 was commercially released. A small step for the Knoll brothers, a huge step for the ''photo-humanity''!
But working with this very first version could be far from comforting. One of the major strenghts of Ps, the use of LAYERS, was not introduced yet ! (only 1994 in version 3).
Just watch this short video and smile on how top Ps-pro's have a tough time using their favourite program.
By the way, Happy Birthday PHOTOSHOP! Now, with 25, you are finally an adult !

My good collegue and friend, Dominik Fleischmann, had a few days ago a blissful opening - called STEPS AND STONES - with his street-photography-portfolio from the last 7 years at Stift Klosterneuburg, next to Vienna.
I had the pleasure to print his 33 photographs at colorloft, on Fine Art paper from the Brilliant Museum line produced by Hahnemühle.
(Although being a purist, savouring photographic art with no additives, I must say that the concept of the exhibition, apart from being new, produced a lucky mix between the fine wines of the Vinothek and the fine art displayed by Dominik. Some guests didn't miss the opportunity and went home not only with a bottle of wine but also with a signed & numbered print.)
Proud of you Domi!

P.S. The show can be seen till June 30. I would say, do not miss it if you happen to be round Vienna.

It is the last day of Luka Alagiyawanna's exhib in Colombo, Sri Lanka. (I didn't start with 'if you happen to be in Colombo tonite', it is around 20 hrs by plane away:). The title: from this point forward. It depicts young people from this country with their dreams, fears, longings & desires in an almost installation like composition. I had the pleasure to print a part of the exhibition portfolio for the young but fearless Luka here at my colorloft-studio in northern Berlin. Congrats once again for this meaningful project, Luka!

What a delightful time spent! A few days ago the young German photographer Laura Stark was here to get her thrilling portfolio printed for the BRITA art prize final. We discussed her giant TIFF files, adapted the monitor profile for the specific paper (a glorious new member in the colorloft portfolio), edited, tested on paper, edited again, printed in 60 x 90 cm, sprayed, mounted on Forex and cut to size (what a hit in the back!!) just to get the package done for the next morning ready to be sent to this interesting art competition, where Laura qualified in the final stage. (The three big winners are not out yet, so tons of success to you Laura!)
And finally, the new member in the exclusive colorloft paper portfolio: BRILLIANT MUSEUM Satin Matte White produced by the famous Hahnemühle for Calumet (see picture). Its slight satin texture is perfectly suited for fine art landscapes and not only. We were both mesmerized by it. (available both as sheets and roll ware up to 60 x 150 cm.)

NO friends, this is NOT a blueprint (cyanotype), it is indeed a color polaroid pic on IMPOSSIBLE image spectra material. The extreme blue cast came from the -25 degrees in the moment I photographed it in January back in Romania.
Now I ask myself on which fine art paper from HAHNEMÜHLE I should print it as a limited edition. I will probably take the superb WILLIAM TURNER 310 g. The texture is a blast, I tell you guys!

DID YOU KNOW that the famous IRVING PENN (famous mostly for his world class fashion photography) was a tremendous print master and experimentator with old, so called historical or - more recently - 'alternative processes'?
Take a look at this amazing modern platinum print he did in 1979 and if you find interest read the description from one of the best books on the history of printing I know. ('The Printed Picture' by Richard Benson, published by the MOMA in NY of course).

I have been asked several times what a GICLEE print is. I had to check wikipedia myself in the beginning. NOW I'm producing them.

Let's see what good old wiki says:

Giclée (/ʒiːˈkleɪ/ zhee-klay or /dʒiːˈkleɪ/) is a neologism coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne for fine art digital prints made on inkjet printers. The name originally applied to fine art prints created on IRIS printers in a process invented in the late 1980s but has since come to mean any inkjet print. It is often used by artists, galleries, and print shops to denote high quality printing.

ORIGINS

The word giclée was adopted by Jack Duganne, a printmaker working at Nash Editions. He wanted a name for the new type of prints they were producing on the IRIS printer, a large-format, high-resolution industrial prepress proofing inkjet printer they had adapted for fine-art printing. He was specifically looking for a word that would not have the negative connotations of "inkjet" or "computer generated". It is based on the French word gicleur, which means "nozzle" (the verb form gicler means "to squirt, spurt, or spray"). An unintended consequence of Duganne's choice of name was its problematic use in the French language since it is also modern French slang for male ejaculation.

CURRENT USAGE

Besides its original association with IRIS prints, the word giclée has come to be associated with other types of inkjet printing including processes that use fade-resistant, archival inks (pigment-based), and archival substrates primarily produced on Canon, Epson, HP and other large-format printers. These printers use the CMYK color process but may have multiple cartridges for variations of each color based on the CcMmYK color model (such as light magenta and light cyan inks in addition to regular magenta and cyan); this increases the apparent resolution and color gamut and allows smoother gradient transitions. A wide variety of substrates is available, including various textures and finishes such as matte photo paper, watercolor paper, cotton canvas, or artist textured vinyl.

APPLICATIONS

Artists generally use inkjet printing to make reproductions of their original two-dimensional artwork, photographs, or computer-generated art. Professionally produced inkjet prints are much more expensive on a per-print basis than the four-color offset lithography process traditionally used for such reproductions. (A large-format inkjet print can cost more than $50, not including scanning and color correction, compared to $5 for a four-color offset litho print of the same image in a run of 1,000.) Four-color offset lithographic presses have the disadvantage of the full job having to be set up and produced all at once in a mass edition. With inkjet printing the artist does not have to pay for the expensive printing plate setup or the marketing and storage needed for large four-color offset print runs. This allows the artist to follow a just-in-time business model in which inkjet printing can be an economical option, since art can be printed and sold individually in accordance with demand. Inkjet printing has the added advantage of allowing artists to take total control of the production of their images, including the final color correction and the substrates being used, and it is even feasible for individual artists to own and operate their own printers.
[What I actually did with the greatest joy in October last year.]
