My digital paintings are printed in large format. To make sure that no detail appears pixelated - even with very large art prints - I basically work with high resolutions, which are actually unnecessary for simple screen presentations.
Only in this way it's possible to achieve a reproduction of natural-looking details that can actually compete with traditional painting methods.

A very simple setting in World Machine ensures provision of a terrain mesh and also of a corresponding heightmap, which must be a 16-Bit grayscale file (for the landscape editor of Unreal Engine). See picture 1.
The resulting mesh is only used as model for the creation of textures in 3D Coat, but not for the final landscape in Unreal Engine. UE generates the solid of my sci-fi terrain from the heightmap alone (see picture 2).
Finally, the finished texture maps from 3D Coat will be imported into Unreal Engine (see below) and... hurray!
The lit terrain looks promising. In the next step I have to connect the color map with the landscape and then I will see what terrain improvements I can make with the landscape editor of UE.

I started wholehearted and serious painting only at the beginning of 2018, at the age of 53. As an art lover and long-standing computer nerd or, more explicitly, a software enthusiast, it was a small step for me into the world of digital art.
I'm fascinated of virtual worlds and their appealing magic, as well as I love decorative arts, beautifull materials, crafts and craftmanship.
My experience with graphics tablet and digital pen have convinced me - practically from one day to the next - that the digital tools do not "take away" the least with regard to artistic quality, but on the contrary add many qualities and possibilities of expression.
Painting with oils and watercolor in earlier years was merely a side issue, until I finally switched over to digital painting and it's incredible advantages.
Whether watercolor, oil paint, pastel chalk, charcoal or crayon, sculpting with clay or with metals - any usual or even unusual medium of painting can now be imitated deceptively real.
Sculpting and painting in 3D space has been perfected by some artists who use VR headsets and digital gloves to create the most amazing objects and worlds; art spaces and art dreams that are virtually walkable and tangible.
In addition to three-dimensional artworks, one of the main focuses of my own work is still the creation of digital paintings with a traditional touch: art created using digitally simulated brushes, spatulas and pens.
Almost every day I discover exciting techniques of artistic refinement enriching my work that go far beyond what I have learned in digital photography. It is for this reason, that for me photography is no longer the number one choice when it comes to creating something visually spectacular, beautiful or graphically impressive.
I use a method that originates from the workflow of compositing artists or concept designers also for my painterly projects. Templates for my subjects are more and more often not photos but three-dimensional objects, which I first bring to the desired perspective and illuminate appropriately, before finally visualizing the overall composition with painterly means.
