Loads and loads of excellent 2nd-hand books hit the shelves in the last couple of days. A small sampling below.

On an aside, one added bonus we've discovered with the new premises is how lovely and cool it is on hot days. Makes for pleasant Summer browsing.

We had the pleasure of meeting author Fernanda Melchor when she dropped into the shop this afternoon to sign some copies of her books, 'Hurricane Season' & 'Paradais'. Both books were translated into English by Sophie Hughes and published by one of our favourite independent publishers, Fitzcarraldo Editions.

Paradais: Inside a luxury housing complex, two misfit teenagers sneak around and get drunk. Franco Andrade, lonely, overweight, and addicted to porn, obsessively fantasizes about seducing his neighbour – an attractive married woman and mother – while Polo dreams about quitting his gruelling job as a gardener within the gated community and fleeing his overbearing mother and their narco-controlled village. Each facing the impossibility of getting what he thinks he deserves, Franco and Polo hatch a mindless and macabre scheme. Written in a chilling torrent of prose by one of our most thrilling new writers, Paradais explores the explosive fragility of Mexican society – fractured by issues of race, class and violence – and how the myths, desires, and hardships of teenagers can tear life apart at the seams.

Hurricane Season: The Witch is dead. After a group of children playing near the irrigation canals discover her decomposing corpse, the village of La Matosa is rife with rumours about how and why this murder occurred. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, Fernanda Melchor paints a moving portrait of lives governed by poverty and violence, machismo and misogyny, superstition and prejudice. Written with an infernal lyricism that is as affecting as it is enthralling, Hurricane Season, Melchor’s first novel to appear in English, is a formidable portrait of Mexico and its demons.

If you're interested in participating in our book club, we have a poll now online to vote for the books from May to November.

Here are the options for the book club for the rest of 2022. The 7 books with the most votes will be discussed at the book club on the third Thursday of the month starting in May (the book for April has already been chosen and is Flann O'Brien's At Swim-Two-Birds).

The Borders of Winter – Reading Ukraine — Elsewhere: A Journal of Place

Our friend, the German-Irish writer Marcel Krueger has written this beautiful and informative guide to Ukrainian writers past and present.

By Marcel Krueger :  Despair and sadness, this is what I first felt when waking up to the outbreak of war in Ukraine. The thing that I had made dark jokes about just the day before with a Polish acquaintance with relatives in Ukraine, a thing that felt like abstract posturing with words a

Children's book author and illustrator Shirley Hughes died today at the age of 94. Her stories were firm favourites of mine as a child and later of my own children. Her illustrations are absolutely beautiful and her stories so insightful, she really captures how a child thinks and feels.

There are so many beautiful new children's books being published these days, here are just some of our favourites. These two brilliant novels are our favourites so far this year, debut novel 'Kingdomtide' by Rye Curtis and the new English translation of Katja Oskamp's 'Marzahn, Mon Amour' by Jo Heinrich. If you liked 'Leonard and Hungry Paul' by Ronan Hession, then 'Marzahn, Mon Amour', is one for you!

New Kiez. New bookmarks.

The renovations are in their final stages, then it will be a few days of us installing shelves and putting books on them, etc. Needless to say, things are taking longer than we anticipated but we will announce our re-opening date very soon.

24/12/2021

We're off to Ireland (50% of us are already there) for the first Christmas in a few years.
We wish all our customers, family, friends and colleagues a happy Christmas and a peaceful, happy, healthy and more equal New Year.
We'll see you in our new shop in Kreuzberg some time towards the middle of January.
Dave & Orla.

18/12/2021

We've had to finally admit to ourselves that as much as wanted it, our new place won't be ready in time for us to re-open before Christmas. It's possibly just as well as it would have been a mad rush.
It's very close though, so we will be open in January.
Our last order for delivery before Christmas will be on Monday (by 4pm). Books that we have in stock can be delivered or collected up to the 23rd.

20/11/2021

We have found a new home for Curious Fox, over the canal in Kreuzberg. It still needs some renovation and so we won’t be open for a few weeks yet but we hope to be up and running in early December.
Though we are sad to be leaving the Kiez & Neukölln, we look forward to a new chapter in Kreuzberg.
Once again, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sent us tips for new locations, good wishes and kind words.
Further details to follow once we know exactly when we can open our doors.

This photo was taken yesterday by our friend Adrian Shephard.
Our last days open for business at Flughafenstrasse are Monday 23 August & Tuesday 24 August.

From Wednesday 25 August we will be closed until we find a new location for the business.

During this time, we will continue take orders via email and deliver them by arrangement within a reasonable distance from Kreuzberg / Neukölln.

When we have a new location confirmed, we will announce it here and on our website. Feel free to sign up to our newsletter also.
Órla & Dave.

15/08/2021

We are suspending the Book Club until we are settled in our new location.
We'll pick up where we left off with Flann O'Brien's "At Swim-Two-Birds" soon.

28/07/2021

We will be closing today at the earlier time of 17:50. Apologies for any inconvenience.

27/07/2021

People seem to be wondering, so we'd just like to make clear that business will continue as normal at Flughafenstrasse until further notice.
Books may still be ordered for next-day delivery or from overseas and we will continue to stock the same titles you expect to find with us, in addition to all the newly published books too.

We have been overwhelmed by the messages of support, the offers of help packing up and all of the tips for new locations people have sent us and so we very grateful for all of that.

More news when we have it.

24/07/2021

The shop will be closed on Monday 26 July. It's business as usual from Tuesday 27 July at 12:00.

Bloomsday : Ulysses Expanded exhibition

BLOOMSDAY & VIRTUAL REALITY! Tomorrow (Wed 16 June) is Bloomsday. This is the second year that we haven't been able to hold an event in the shop, fingers firmly crossed for next year!
The Embassy of Ireland Berlin has organised two great events to mark the occasion.
1) The exhibition 'Ulysses Expanded' is a selection of work from German based artists, Ciarán Walsh, Barry Lanigan, Orla Connolly, and Liam Ryan, made to accompany readings from Ulysses.
The works can be viewed on their website (https://www.dfa.ie/irish-embassy/germany/) from 13:00 CET on 16 June, or join the live reception at 19:00 CET later that day in the Virtual Reality reception area, where you can explore the exhibition, socialise, and experience the readings in a very special way, without requiring special Virtual Reality equipment.
The exhibition will also be available to view on their page.
2) Thursday 17 June at 19:00 CET. A reading of the absolutely brilliant new novel 'Nora' by Nuala O'Connor, a bold reimagining of the life of James Joyce's wife, muse, and the model for Molly Bloom in Ulysses. Register using this link.

"What makes a bookstore truly local is the people, not the Postleitzahl." We're glad you're back! Curious Fox Books, Berlin https://www.exberliner.com/books/curious-foxs-new-kreuzberg-den/
"If you can spell it, we can order it!" - what a a great byline for your lovely little shop. Sorry to hear you have to relocate. If it weren't so far away, I'd say come to Batemans Bay in Australia as, unfortunately, we've lost our bookshops to Amazon and Book Depository. I heard about you in a roundabout way - see http://athomeatriverbend.blogspot.com/2021/07/the-yellow-lighted-bookshop.html . Love the Irish, especially those with fridges! -see http://athomeatriverbend.blogspot.com/2021/05/round-ireland-with-fridge.html

Not the best of my readings of Zack's poem "O beautiful flower..." I say to myself - you never beat that first time you read it almost to pure salt - it keeps transforming and re-telling the story differently... reminds me of the beginning of this year, celebrated in Paris Lit Up (Jan 2020) with no public transport and having long walks and conversations with parisian international spoken-word folks Ed Bell reminds me also the end of the previous year, and when we with Aliona Petrenco met Robert Zachary in Curious Fox Books, Berlin (somewhere in October?) and we went to Heidelberg and Utrecht together to do his show in ACU and Mezrab and sing and create with Rudjer Glavurtic and then Teatru-spalatorie goes without words... Steph Nah with her Denken in Bewegung — embodied thinking group ...the list is longer thank you folks for crossing paths with me and being an inspiration time is just before or after or in-between
Looks like Connell from 'Normal People' paid you guys a visit 😉
