We are suspending the Book Club until we are settled in our new location.
We'll pick up where we left off with Flann O'Brien's "At Swim-Two-Birds" soon.

28/07/2021

We will be closing today at the earlier time of 17:50. Apologies for any inconvenience.

27/07/2021

People seem to be wondering, so we'd just like to make clear that business will continue as normal at Flughafenstrasse until further notice.
Books may still be ordered for next-day delivery or from overseas and we will continue to stock the same titles you expect to find with us, in addition to all the newly published books too.

We have been overwhelmed by the messages of support, the offers of help packing up and all of the tips for new locations people have sent us and so we very grateful for all of that.

More news when we have it.

24/07/2021

The shop will be closed on Monday 26 July. It's business as usual from Tuesday 27 July at 12:00.

Bloomsday : Ulysses Expanded exhibition

BLOOMSDAY & VIRTUAL REALITY! Tomorrow (Wed 16 June) is Bloomsday. This is the second year that we haven't been able to hold an event in the shop, fingers firmly crossed for next year!
The Embassy of Ireland Berlin has organised two great events to mark the occasion.
1) The exhibition 'Ulysses Expanded' is a selection of work from German based artists, Ciarán Walsh, Barry Lanigan, Orla Connolly, and Liam Ryan, made to accompany readings from Ulysses.
The works can be viewed on their website (https://www.dfa.ie/irish-embassy/germany/) from 13:00 CET on 16 June, or join the live reception at 19:00 CET later that day in the Virtual Reality reception area, where you can explore the exhibition, socialise, and experience the readings in a very special way, without requiring special Virtual Reality equipment.
The exhibition will also be available to view on their page.
2) Thursday 17 June at 19:00 CET. A reading of the absolutely brilliant new novel 'Nora' by Nuala O'Connor, a bold reimagining of the life of James Joyce's wife, muse, and the model for Molly Bloom in Ulysses. Register using this link.

New corona regulations in Berlin from Wednesday 31.03.2021
(tldr: only FFP2 masks permitted, no corona test required.)

As bookshops in Berlin belong to the list of essential businesses, the only change for us from Wednesday, is the mandatory wearing of FFP2 masks for anyone in the shop (surgical masks no long suffice).

The new requirement to have a current negative corona test
result for entry to shops DOES NOT include essential businesses like bookshops, supermarkets, petrol stations, chemists, etc., so you will not need to present a negative test result to shop with us.

As workers in a customer-facing environment the staff of Curious Fox must and will be tested once a week.

The limit of four customers in the shop at any one time will be
maintained and our opening hours remain unchanged.

Embassy of Ireland Berlin

The Irish Embassy here in Berlin have a call for (Irish, Berlin-living) illustrators for a St. Patrick's Day greeting card. See below.

Call for illustrations for St. Patrick’s Day in Germany Greeting Card

St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s National Day, is celebrated annually in Germany and across the globe by all Irish, friends of Ireland and those of Irish descent. St. Patrick’s Day 2021 in Germany and elsewhere will be different. The large gatherings, receptions and parties, which normally mark the period, will not be possible. The Embassy is exploring alternative ways of marking St. Patrick’s Day 2021 and as part of this effort would like to commission a special “St. Patrick’s Day in Germany” greeting card. We will use this card to reach out to our many German contacts, whom we cannot, as usual, invite to our St. Patrick’s Day reception in Berlin.

Against this background we are delighted to announce a competition for Irish illustrators based in Germany to help us to create the artwork for the card.

We are seeking artworks that reflect on St. Patrick’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day in Germany and broader Irish-German relations.

Competition Guidelines:

Applicants must be Irish and based in Germany.

There is no lower or upper age limit on those who may submit artworks or illustrations but this is not conceived as a Children’s art competition.

Each illustrator/artist is allowed to submit a maximum of three illustrations.

Applications should be submitted in digital format to the email address

Berlin(at)dfa(dot)ie

and marked “St Patrick’s Day illustration – applicant’s name”

The illustrations should be saved in JPEG or PNG format with a minimum resolution of 300dpi

Illustrations should ideally be submitted in landscape format / widescreen ratio (16:9)

Submissions must be received by close of business on 1 February 2021

All submissions must be accompanied by full contact details, address and telephone numbers to ensure that all applicants may be contacted promptly should their illustration be used.

Illustrations must be the original work of those submitting and not previously used in any similar campaign.

The artist whose artwork is selected as the 2021 Embassy of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day greeting card image, will be paid €400 for usage rights. Upon payment of €400, the Embassy of Ireland in Germany will retain usage rights to the selected image, for a maximum period of three years, for the stated purpose and related uses and platforms, without additional permissions or fees

The artist will be credited on the back cover of the card/image whenever utilised.

GDPR

The Embassy of Ireland in Germany is committed to ensuring the security and protection of the personal information that we process, and to provide a compliant and consistent approach to data protection and will only store contact information for the duration of the competition.

16/12/2020

Bookshops remain open during the lockdown! It seems that understandably not everyone is entirely clear on what businesses will be open during lockdown, even our postwoman just dropped in to tell us that she left our parcels in the post office this morning as she thought we would be closed from today. There was some back and forth regarding what businesses in Berlin would be deemed 'essential' and would be allowed remain open during the lockdown. Bookshops are on that list and we will be open Mon-Sat 10am-7pm. Usual hygiene regulations apply! Now off to join the queue at the post office, I'll need to bring a long book.

13/12/2020

Contrary to our earlier post regarding closing during this lockdown, it has just been announced that bookshops have been included in the list of shops that are allowed to remain open. We are therefore operating as normal Mon-Sat 10am - 7pm.

13/12/2020

Edit: It has been announced that bookshops in Berlin are allowed to remain open! We will be open Mon-Sat 10am-7pm from tomorrow (Mon 14 Dec).

New Lockdown restrictions come into force from Wednesday 16 December.
Monday 14 December and Tuesday 15 December we will be OPEN from 10am until 8pm.
(Please note a maximum of four customers will be allowed in the shop at once during these days)
From 16 December our plan is to take orders via email or telephone and to deliver. We will deliver for free within a 5km radius of the shop.
Outside of 5km we can send via Deutsche Post & DHL for cost, however we cannot guarantee delivery times.
It is our plan to offer a click and collect / Abholung service, if we are allowed. We will confirm this by Wednesday.

Anyone who has already placed orders with us for Christmas, please note we will do our utmost to get those to you, albeit in a safe and responsible way.

"If you can spell it, we can order it!" - what a a great byline for your lovely little shop. Sorry to hear you have to relocate. If it weren't so far away, I'd say come to Batemans Bay in Australia as, unfortunately, we've lost our bookshops to Amazon and Book Depository. I heard about you in a roundabout way - see http://athomeatriverbend.blogspot.com/2021/07/the-yellow-lighted-bookshop.html . Love the Irish, especially those with fridges! -see http://athomeatriverbend.blogspot.com/2021/05/round-ireland-with-fridge.html

Are there any plans for a postal service, to keep Curious Fox in the game, during these strange days? Just curious to know.
