European Route of Historic Theatres - ERHT All about the European Route on / Alles über die Europastraße auf / Tous sur la Route européenne sur www.erht.eu

Theatre is everywhere in Europe. It is part of our civilization. But it is a fleeting art: the moment a performance is over, it continues to exist only in the memory of the spectator. Nevertheless, there is one permanent expression of this art: the theatre buildings. Every theatre building tells us something about the time when it was built, the intentions of its builders, the relationship between audience and artists, the cooperation of the artists across all borders and the change of times. Furthermore there is a European aspect to all theatres: the architectural form as we know it today was developed in Italy in the 17th century and subsequently spread all over Europe. The theatre therefore belongs to the very few truly European types of building. To make it as easy for you as possible to experience this very special European cultural heritage, selected historic theatres are being connected up to form a European Route of Historic Theatres. The European Route consists of various part routes, each combining about 10 theatres, offering a pleasant journey of about a week.

From the early 1820's up until the 1850's our Theatre of the Month, the Théâtre Royal du Parc in Brussels, Belgium, specialised in comédie en vaudeville, a form of theatrical entertainment with origins in late 17th century Paris. Here, comedy and satire was performed together with the melodies of popular vaudeville songs. These simple airs were perfect for entertaining and easily digestible performances since they were already associated with satire. Although the genre might appear rather simple, certain parts did find their way into opera.
The so called vaudeville final would prominently see all the characters of the piece come together at its end, each singing a short verse. This verse would often end with a refrain sung by everyone and a final verse performed by the ensemble as a whole. Thereby the first verse would often provide the moral of the story, while the subsequent verses would serve as comments on particular events in the plot, and the final verse would be used as an appeal to the audience. Performed with newly composed music the vaudeville final can be discerned in many operas, including Mozart's 'Die Entführung aus dem Serai' (1782), Rossini's 'Il barbiere di Siviglia' (1816), and Stravinsky's 'The Rake's Progress' (1951).
The vaudeville final furthermore became a common feature of the early opéras comiques, which became popular at the Théâtre Royal du Parc from 1850 onwards.

In March our Theatre of the Month is the Théâtre Royal du Parc in Brussels, Belgium.
The Théâtre Royal du Parc is situated in a Vauxhall - a pleasure garden with an open-air café where concerts and dramatic performances were given. The success of the concept in metropoles like London and Paris prompted the Bultos brothers to commission a Vauxhall for Bruseels in 1780 (at one side of the park in the city centre). The theatre building by architect Loius Montoyer was added two years later to afford the possibility of staging plays indoors. The intimate “bonbonnière” style auditorium seats 550 spectators. Plays and performances will continue to run until June.

26/02/2015

Litomyšl Palace, home to our Theatre of the Month, is too the birthplace of the father of Czech music, Bedřich Smetana. Smetana was not born in the main building of the castle but in an adjacent brewery on the 2nd of March, 1824. His father, František Smetana, managed the brewery for Count Waldstein. In his spare time he played in a string quartet despite never having received a formal musical education. František swiftly introduced his son to music who turned out to be incredibly talented, giving his first public performance in October 1830 at the age of six at Litomyšl's Philosophical Academy.

He went on to study music under Josef Proksch in Prague but left the city for Sweden after failing to establish a career there. In Gothenburg he worked as a teacher and choirmaster before the more liberal political climate in Bohemia prompted him to return and live permanently in Prague. His first two operas, 'The Brandenburgers in Bohemia' and 'The Bartered Bride' premiered at the Provisional Theatre in Prague in 1866. Become popular through the success of The Bartered Bride, Smetana became the theatre's principal conductor, a post he kept until 1874.

Towards the end of his life and although he was completely deaf Smetana continued to compose until his incarceration in an asylum and his subsequent death in 1884.

Since 1949 Litomyšl has commemorated the life and works of Bedřich Smetana with the Smetana's Litomyšl Opera Festival. This year the festival takes place from the 11th of June until the 5th of July, a perfect way to explore Litomyšl, its palace and the Palace Theatre.

Our Theatre of the Month is the Palace Theatre at Litomyšl Palace, Czech Republic. Last week we have included a short video about the palace and the importance of the theatre, however the palace (dating from the years 1568-1581) is really worth a closer look. The UNESCO cites two criteria for the inscription of the palace into the World Heritage List. Firstly it is an immaculately preserved example of the arcade castle, a type of building first developed in Italy and modified in the Czech lands to create an evolved form of special architecural quality. Secondly Litomyšl Castle illustrates the aristocratic residences of central Europe in the Ranaissance and their subsequent development under the influence of new artistic movements.

The castle has four wings and three storeys, constructed asymetrically. The western wing is the largest, whereas the southern wing is no more than a two-storeyed arcaded gallery to close the square second courtyard (a feature that is unique to Litomyšl). This groin-vaulted arcading continues round the western and eastern sides of the courtyard. The south-eastern corner of the eastern wing contains the castle chapel. Yet the structure alone might not be the main attraction for visitors. There is of course the theatre but there is also another feature that is celebrated by tourists and is often mentioned when recommending a visit: the faҫade.
The complete outside of the castle is decorated with thousands of rectangular sgraffiti, a wall decoration technique, where layers of plaster in contrasting colours are applied on to a moistened surface and then scratched away to produce a drawing. Every image is different from the others, some despicting animals, people, leaves, fruits or mythical figures.
