The exhibition HR Giger & Mire Lee brings together iconic sculptures, early paintings and drawings of the legendary Swiss artist and Alien father HR Giger (*1940, Switzerland), alongside newly commissioned, site-specific kinetic installations by South Korean artist Mire Lee (*1988, Korea). Giger’s darkly surreal visions and ‘biomechanoid’ creatures coalesce with Lee’s visceral sculptural appendages born of machinery and slime. Schinkel Pavillon becomes a womb-like space for an interplay between birth, eroticism and death.

Korean Emotions meet the Spirit of Bauhaus
Young-Jae Lee's ceramic vessels, in interplay with KDK's object photography, represent the aesthetic transformation of Korean emotions in their encounter with the basic ideas of Bauhaus. Beyond the cultural "Korea-Germany" encounter, their works render tangible the synthesis of artistic freedom and practicality, tradition and reform, abstraction and concretization, as well as artificiality and naturalness. The artists express their fascination and passion for new forms and colors in the different materiality, dimensionality and functionality. In the space of silent correspondences between silhouettes and volumes, the viewer is invited to trace the artistic sense of conceptual balance between dynamism and the moment of inner tranquility. This sensual perception of contemplative aesthetics can function as one important way of communicating contemporary art in a global context. #youngjaelee #kdk #koreanischeskulturzentrum #ceramics #photography #bauhaus #korea #germany #exhibition #ausstellung #kunst #margaretenhöhe

Part of her ongoing series Undefined Panorama, the first solo presentation of the Korean artist’s work in Germany premieres the newest iteration of the series, Undefined Panorama 3.1 (2021). Responding to the civil unrest experienced throughout the Covid-19 pandemic as well as to the remarkable building, originally built as a mourning hall, Ham has created a new large-scale, three-channel video installation that employs the concepts of panorama and narrative to understand the underlying structure of contemporary life.

With the kind support of the Creative Industries Fund NL, Arts Council Korea, and Koreanisches Kulturzentrum Berlin.

Visit: 10–18 July, Mon-Sun 13:00–21:00, no slot reservation or testing needed.

Yang Ah Ham Blurring truth and fiction, Yang Ah Ham’s work has taken inspiration from observations on contemporary life, since the 1990s. Through her video works she explores alternative sociopolitical systems, creating moving-image panoramas that contemplate possibilities for shifting and reconstructing existing societal structures. #yanghaham #transmediale #koreanischeskulturzentrum #koreanart #mediaart #exhibition #ausstellung #silentgreen

Yen Noh engages with intimate histories of trauma, upheaval, and freedom during Japan’s colonisation of Korea and its ongoing (post) colonial consequences. For the exhibition, she presents the first iteration titled Solid Triangular Drawing as part of the umbrella project Run to the Lowest Paradise that re-examines and reactivates the anti-colonial performance of Yi Sang’s poetics, the Korean poet, architect, and artist who was born in the year of Japanese annexation of Korea. It takes translation as a mode of linguistic performance—an indefinite rehearsal of the limits of translation. #yennoh #gallerydamdam #kccopencall2021 #contemporaryart #exhibition #berlin #london #installation #translation

Hye Young Sin is a Cologne-based artist whose works move between installation, performance and sculpture. She is interested in situations where sound, movement, form, material come into play and in so doing become the starting points of her works. ‘Time-piece’ is a six-metre long installation, that subtly induced movements produce delicate sounds and these slow down as the battery charge progressively declines, marking the passing of time.

Premiered at the 2019 edition of the Venice Biennale, ‘Aubade V’ is a large-scale casted steel tower. Its design incorporates inspirational elements from modernist architecture, such as Tatlin’s Constructivist Tower and the Eiffel Tower. The steel structure is made from barbed wire debris collected from a guard’s post in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which was demolished in 2018 as part of an inter-Korean military accord. Attached to the structure are various light signals that flicker anxiously, failing to communicate their message to the audience, as many will not be able to decode—or even recognize—Morse Code or the International Code of Signals. Moreover, the English text in LED lights may appear more familiar, yet it states: “For the next 1 million years, the cycle will carry the obliquity between 22˚ 13' 44" and 24˚ 20' 50",” delaying direct or easy understanding. Lee Bul’s ‘Aubade V’ evokes insecurity and uncertainty, rather than utopian or heroic ambitions.

토비아스 레베르거 ‘듀플렉스 하우스’

The conception of the ‘Duplex House’ derives from the prototype of a villagers house exemplary for the Yangji-ri area.It is conceived as a habitation for a north and a south Korean family. Both parties enter the house through the same entrance room on the ground floor. In the typology of the old villagers house this room hosted the weapon storage space.
From there two staircases lead from opposite sides of the entrance room to the separate living spaces on the first floor: sleeping rooms and bathrooms. The only connection between the two separate living spaces is a visual connection via the two round windows located on belly height in the master sleeping rooms. They allow the inhabitants to exchange glances across the 1st floor void in the center of the building.Individual staircases lead to the shared open-plan living room on the top floor with the two kitchen spaces that feature two famous Frankfurt Kitchens and two balconies. The three floors of the ‘Duplex House’ symbolize the history of the two Korean nations: the entrance room stands for the common past, the separate spaces of the 1st floor for the present showing the mutual eying of the two nations by the two small windows. In this reading the top floor represents the joint future of the two reunified nations. Before the reunification the ‘Duplex House’ should be inhabited by a south Korean family. After reunification the house should be inhabited by a North Korean and the South Korean family.

The gallery space of the Cultural Department of the Republic of Korea embassy in Germany

Since 2000 the gallery space of the Korean Cultural Centre of the Republic of Korea embassy in Germany has held numerous exhibitions and symposiums to introduce unique culture, art and design from Korea. The gallery is located in Potsdamer Platz, at the very heart of Berlin, the pulsating art capital of the European continent.

In 2017, the galley space has been rebranded to gallery damdam. Damdam(담담) has two distinct meanings in Korean language; it may denote a calm atmosphere or deep wide waters. According to the meanings, we give our best to offer audience the variety of a pleasant space of the arts.

The purpose of gallery damdam is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to provide an innovative platform for contemporary art supporting the works of artists related to Korean culture. On the other hand, gallery damdam serves as a focal point where artistic experimentation, intercultural exchange and knowledge transfer occurs. The mission of gallery damdam is to bring light to the unseen experimental contemporary artists and create an expanse of a cultural exchange between countries.
