Premiered at the 2019 edition of the Venice Biennale, ‘Aubade V’ is a large-scale casted steel tower. Its design incorporates inspirational elements from modernist architecture, such as Tatlin’s Constructivist Tower and the Eiffel Tower. The steel structure is made from barbed wire debris collected from a guard’s post in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which was demolished in 2018 as part of an inter-Korean military accord. Attached to the structure are various light signals that flicker anxiously, failing to communicate their message to the audience, as many will not be able to decode—or even recognize—Morse Code or the International Code of Signals. Moreover, the English text in LED lights may appear more familiar, yet it states: “For the next 1 million years, the cycle will carry the obliquity between 22˚ 13' 44" and 24˚ 20' 50",” delaying direct or easy understanding. Lee Bul’s ‘Aubade V’ evokes insecurity and uncertainty, rather than utopian or heroic ambitions.

The conception of the ‘Duplex House’ derives from the prototype of a villagers house exemplary for the Yangji-ri area.It is conceived as a habitation for a north and a south Korean family. Both parties enter the house through the same entrance room on the ground floor. In the typology of the old villagers house this room hosted the weapon storage space.
From there two staircases lead from opposite sides of the entrance room to the separate living spaces on the first floor: sleeping rooms and bathrooms. The only connection between the two separate living spaces is a visual connection via the two round windows located on belly height in the master sleeping rooms. They allow the inhabitants to exchange glances across the 1st floor void in the center of the building.Individual staircases lead to the shared open-plan living room on the top floor with the two kitchen spaces that feature two famous Frankfurt Kitchens and two balconies. The three floors of the ‘Duplex House’ symbolize the history of the two Korean nations: the entrance room stands for the common past, the separate spaces of the 1st floor for the present showing the mutual eying of the two nations by the two small windows. In this reading the top floor represents the joint future of the two reunified nations. Before the reunification the ‘Duplex House’ should be inhabited by a south Korean family. After reunification the house should be inhabited by a North Korean and the South Korean family.

[Real DMZ Project] Kyungah Ham - Are You Lonely, Too?

Kyungah HAM ‘Are You Lonely, Too?’
함경아 '당신도 외롭습니까?'

After coming across propaganda flyers from North Korea, I started to imagine communicating with unknowable people in the North taking a unique artistic approach. That was the point of departure of my ongoing ‘Embroidery Project.’ Text and images produced digitally were delivered by intermediaries through China and Russia to craftspeople in the North. What returned, on the other hand, were labor-intensive analog embroidery works, every little stitching of which was done by their hands. I hoped that while doing the work, artisans would ruminate upon the given texts and images, interpret the allegory and stretch their imagination. In fact, there is not much I could do in the process. Rather, there is always the risk of the work being censored and confiscated by the North Korean authorities. I also had to pay intermediaries additional amounts, and sometimes they would just disappear. These uncertainties testify to today’s reality: the physical inaccessibility of North Korea and ideological hostility that dominates world history.

Needling Whisper, Needle Country / SMS Series is part of the North Korean hand embroidery projects alongside the Chandeliers series. In the camouflage piece, short texts like “Are you lonely, too?” “Money never sleeps,” “Greedy is good,” “Big Smile,” and “If you are like me” that also serve as subtitles exist as images in vivid colors, lines, and shapes. As the caption of the work indicates, the artist delivered a rather uncomfortable whispering to the artisans in the North, taking a grueling detour. The North Korean embroiderers must have stretched their imagination to interpret the meaning hidden in the message. Their interpretation was visualized with the artistic language of embroidery and returned to the artist, taking a detour, this time at a physical level.

In the virtual DMZ space, “Are you lonely, too?” a text image cut out from the physical work is presented in the form of a massive three-dimensional installation, moving beyond the ideological difference between the North and the South and disparate nuances attributable to such difference to whisper back to all those standing on some abstract form of borderline today.

[Real DMZ Project] Superflex - One Two Three Swing!

Superflex ‘One Two Three Swing!’
수퍼플렉스 ‘하나 둘 셋 스윙!’

‘One Two Three Swing!’ is an installation of three interconnected swings affixed to an orange steel line, extending beyond the gallery walls, and stretching into the landscape, and potentially beyond into the wider world.

The swing acts as a human-powered pendulum, converting potential energy into shared movement. Rocking, moving, and propelling forward and back, the swing is activated by human interaction and play. Ordinarily meant for individual use, the swing can seat three people. Those on the swing must together utilise the force of gravity, building up to the instant where falling becomes flying and everyone moves into full swing together. In this playful moment, the potential energy of collective movement is released and can perhaps be channeled to change the course of the planet and our path as society.

The shared experience offered by the swing may trigger reflections on broader issues such as democracy, collective action and social connectivity. It challenges borders and invites the audience to explore dreams and possibilities of collaboration between people. Currently installed in the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea, in a physical as well as a virtual space, the work initiates further reflections of a borderless world with room for expanded dreams.

The first virtual Real DMZ Exhibition

North and South Korea have been divided for over 68 years. What divides the two countries is not just the physical border called the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), but its immeasurable effects on the political, military and diplomatic sectors of both countries. We cannot see or describe them in words but can sense their existence affecting our past, present, and future.

The REAL DMZ PROJECT is a contemporary art and research project focused on issues of the DMZ and the border area. The RDP is pleased to present an online exhibition to bring the artists’ visionary concepts into virtual realization, and hope that it will contribute to the viewers’ perspectives on and rethinking of the border and the division of Korea.

Lee Bul, Minouk Lim, Kyungah Ham, Tobias Rehberger, and Superflex are artists who conceive of projects with borderless minds and unimaginable visions. This exhibition offers them a borderless virtual environment where no constrains exist. It simulates the DMZ, maneuvering the line between reality and imagination. Designed by the media artist duo Roomtone, the virtual DMZ space partakes in proposing for the future of the border area.
We welcome you to our first virtual REAL DMZ exhibition.

The gallery space of the Cultural Department of the Republic of Korea embassy in Germany

Since 2000 the gallery space of the Korean Cultural Centre of the Republic of Korea embassy in Germany has held numerous exhibitions and symposiums to introduce unique culture, art and design from Korea. The gallery is located in Potsdamer Platz, at the very heart of Berlin, the pulsating art capital of the European continent.

In 2017, the galley space has been rebranded to gallery damdam. Damdam(담담) has two distinct meanings in Korean language; it may denote a calm atmosphere or deep wide waters. According to the meanings, we give our best to offer audience the variety of a pleasant space of the arts.

The purpose of gallery damdam is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to provide an innovative platform for contemporary art supporting the works of artists related to Korean culture. On the other hand, gallery damdam serves as a focal point where artistic experimentation, intercultural exchange and knowledge transfer occurs. The mission of gallery damdam is to bring light to the unseen experimental contemporary artists and create an expanse of a cultural exchange between countries.
