Talking Walls - Urban Art in Armenia and Georgia

Talking Walls - Urban Art in Armenia and Georgia We are a team of young students from the Free University of Berlin and eager to discover street art in Yerevan and Tbilisi. Here you can read more about us, our aims and responsibilities within this project. Check it out!

The countries making up the post-Soviet space are home to some of the most exciting developments in the urban art scene. This is no truer than in the capital cities of Armenia and Georgia, Yerevan and Tbilisi. The urban art scene there is a relatively recent development, but is a growing movement and one that is being used as a means of subversive activism and peaceful protest. Can urban art be taken as a sign of a developing civil society in these countries? Is structural change leaving its traces on these cities’ walls? We believe so. We believe that the significance of urban art goes far beyond a few scribbles or some colourful pictures on a wall. Come with us as we get to know the urban art activists of Tbilisi and Yerevan and tell the stories hiding amongst the streets. Let's talk walls together.

In Armenia we also met up with Robert, who took us to see the walls he likes to experiment on in an out-of-the-way suburb of Yerevan. He graduated from the Yerevan State Art Academy and is a professional graphic designer.
His works are mostly portraits of historical Armenian heroes, such as national writer Hovhannes Tumanyan. Thanks to his willingness to accept support from the government, his is the most commonly seen street art in Yerevan.

Street illegal: meet the artivists galvanising political protest in Armenia

Good morning dear followers of Urban Art in the Caucasus!
This week we will present artivists (people that are activists and artists at the same time) from Armenia.
We will start with a group you have to keep in mind when dealing with artivism in Armenia: Counter Strike. This collective uses different kinds of art to rise awareness about current hot topics in politics and society. Their art works often contain critical messages towards the government.
Check out this very informative article about Counter Strike: https://www.calvertjournal.com/articles/show/6557/artak-gevorgyan-street-art-yerevan-armenia
There you can also find a video showing one of the members 'riding' a tank in the city center of Yerevan. A very extraordinary performance!

hyper text transfer protocol

In Tbilisi, we had a very interesting interview with #sadarismelia. Sadarismelia consists of the artists, curators and fashion designers Mariam Natroshvili and Detu Jintcharadze.
They created a very exciting art project called "hyper text transfer protocol" installing paraphrases, that you usually find surfing the Internet, on different buildings and abandoned places in the regions of Georgia. More on this project, you can find here:
http://www.sadarismelia.com/http/hyper-text-transfer-protocol
But also their page and Instagram are absolutely inspiring and worth visiting!

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol is language of forgotten, abandoned places. Places which are not on the map any more. Texts are “ready - made “ messages from internet, social media, different programs...
