So sad to hear about sweet Jon John - so full of positivity in this cynical world and those eyes .... could outshine Bambi. His blood seeped into the floorboards at RISE... literally .... every time we did a show together ###x

The AKA family are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved founder, the artist Jon John. Jon John courageously surrendered to terminal illness yesterday, with the same fearlessness he showed throughout his life. Jon John founded AKA in 2009, as a multi-disciplinary art space, open to all. He wanted an inclusive, safe environment where people could work, connect and grow. Today AKA stands as testament to Jon Johns creative vision and dedication, and will continue to shine as his thriving legacy. Jon John was well known and respected for his performance art. His final performance, Love On Me was streamed live over the Internet and was his way of facing his illness, with humility and love. After this powerful ritual John Jon said, “My heart bursts with gratitude from our shared ritual. My family, friends, artists, and lovers, free from the artificial constraints of this body, this place, and this time, you have healed my spirit – we are together, always”.

AKA will be closed on Friday 7th of April as a mark of respect to JJ and to give the team opportunity to mourn his loss. It is a loss that will be felt across the world, by the multitude of people touched by Jon John’s incredible energy.

2015 heralds the eighth year of RISE - we have been through many incarnations, an artists co-op, a gallery, a project space a boutique and now an artists´ shop. In order to survive RISE will play to its strengths (great artists, self publishing and resistance to the cold) and in 2015 we will concentrate on art production. By printing and publishing artists books, limited edition prints and artist designed t-shirts we look forward to the next eight years.
With a freshly rejigged website and fixed opening times (Tues - Sat, 14:00 - 19:00) we look forward to seeing you soon.

Come for the t-shirts - stay for the art.
