Jens Pepper & Grażyna Siedlecka – Ausnahmezustand

“Photography from Poland is generally not very well known in Germany, although one of the most exciting photo scenes in Europe has developed in the country. The book accompanying the exhibition of Polish photographic art at Berlin’s ZAK – Center for Contemporary Art in the Zitadelle Spandau aims to close this gap in knowledge and shows works by young and middle-aged artists. In addition to many forms of aesthetically and formally fresh documentary photography, the spectrum of what is shown ranges from portrait and self-portrait photography to still life and landscape photography to free artistic approaches in abstraction.”

Thomas Demand – The Dailies

"The Dailies collects snapshots of a world unmistakably our own yet equally strange. Made through Thomas Demand’s renowned practice of constructing, photographing, and destroying meticulous paper models, this series captures minor, everyday moments based on iPhone photographs. Viewed together, they are an inventory of traces – signs of consumption, evidence of people just departed or out of sight, spectres of things left behind..."

Gordon Parks – Stokely Charmichael and Black Power

Steidl 2022

"Gordon Parks’ 1967 Life magazine essay “Whip of Black Power” is a nuanced profile of the young and controversial civil rights leader Stokely Carmichael. As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Carmichael gained national attention and inspired media backlash when he issued the call for Black Power in Greenwood, Mississippi, in June 1966. Parks, on contract with Life, shadowed him from the fall of 1966 to the spring of 1967, as Carmichael gave speeches, headed meetings and promoted the growing Black Power movement. Parks’ photos and writing addressed Carmichael’s intelligence and humor in equal measure, presenting the whole man behind the headline-making speeches. In his finely drawn sketch of a leader and a movement, Parks reveals his own advocacy of Black Power and its message of self-determination and love."

✈️❤️ New Arrival ❤️✈️

Andreas Gehrke – Flughafen Berlin-Tegel (signed)

On 8 November 2020 the last commercial aircraft departed from Berlin Tegel Airport. It left an emptiness in its wake; but also a utopian space in which the idea, the architecture and the history of the site continue to resonate. In this respect, Berlin Tegel was unlike the major international hubs in Shanghai, Denver, London and Frankfurt am Main which, with their never-ending agglo-merations of departure lounges, check-in counters, retractable barriers, escalators and shopping facilities, hardly differ from one another. As an airport, it wasn’t merely a transit zone of the globalised era; it was also a place with a particular social and historical significance.

Andreas Gehrke visited the site between 2020 and 2021, photographing the once crowded main terminal, the decommissioned airfield and the abandoned auxiliary buildings. His images show a juxtaposition of vision and stagnation, and how these states eventually became reality for Berlin Tegel.

🤍Patricia Morosan “(I) Remember Europe” Book Launch🤍

Friday 16 December 2022 18:00 – 21:00

“(I) Remember Europe” is a photographic journey which reveals the center as existential pursuit, as geographical destiny and as political metaphor. The geographical center of Europe lies somewhere in between the Mediterranean Sea in the South, the Atlantic in the West, the Cape in the North and the Urals in the East. Various places, in seven different countries claim to be the center of the European continent. “(I) Remember Europe” is a photographic search and an emotional localization in the coordinates which claim to be the geographical center of Europe.”

🔥New Arrival 🔥

Thomas Rousset – Prabérians

"Rousset uses the agricultural working village of his childhood, on the border of France and Switzerland, to examine the totemic and ritualistic aspects of rural life... In his creative collaborations with his fellow Prabérians, Rousset engages with deep traditions of rural eccentricity and a dignified non-conformity that unites and binds communities against the harsh realities of everyday agricultural life. Rousset mixes these exaggerated scenarios with striking landscapes and naturalistic portraits, hinting at the creative potential locked within the land and its inhabitants, and the daily dance between work and play, solemnity and joy."

Johanna-Maria Fritz – Daughters of Magic

"Mihaela Minca is the most powerful witch of Romania.
The profession has a tradition in Mihaela’s family, her mother and grandmother were witches already. Today she runs a flourishing international business together with her daughters and her daughter-in-law: From love spells to curses the witches have everything on offer... Here, in this Roma family and their closely knit community in Southeastern Europe, magic and mysticism are a natural part of life. The witches’ craft is also an expression of female strength within an everyday culture shaped by men."

🖤 Damien Daufresne “Undertow” Book Launch 🖤

Friday 9 December 2022 18:00 – 21:00

We are our own universes. Each of us. Life is a journey through an immeasurable collection of such universes. How this journey will go, where it will take us, is not only up to us. Hence our being lost, waiting for a helping hand or a happy coincidence. Hence our projections of the future, but also memories of the past. Everything comes back. Panta rhei. But somewhere on this trail, each of us finds this one and only place that is home. Home not in a sense of the material four walls, but such constellations of different universes that together make up this space that can be called that. And this is the most beautiful part of it. In his newest book, Damien Daufresne unveils the secret of one such universe – Undertow.

“Wandering in an imaginary city, Metropolia invites the viewer on a dreamlike stroll punctuated by enigmatic encounters. The urban space is apprehended in fragments, guessed over the silhouettes that we cross there. Mists, exploded grains, sometimes saturated lights, shades of grey, monochrome colors playing with cold blues or warm oranges..."

Gary Van Zante – The Presence of Something Past: Ulrich Wüst Photographs

Signed by Ulrich Wüst

Kerber Verlag 2022

In this monograph on Wüst, Van Zante provides a context for his work in American and German urban photography and photography of place. Over two hundred photographs are published here, many for the first time, including a selection of Wüst’s distinctive leporellos of titled series. An interview with the photographer and an exhibition and publishing history are included.

Ulrich Wüst (*1949) trained as an urban planner and began photographing East German cities in the late 1970s. Today, his early work is widely recognized as a subtly formulated critique of social conditions in the GDR and one of the most important photographic records of the socialist state. Since the 1990s, he has expanded his practice to focus on the memory landscape of reunified Germany and the transformations of both city and countryside, particularly the villages and farming culture of Uckermark and other rural regions.

❤️‍🔥NEW ARRIVAL❤️‍🔥

Rob Hornstra – The Unknown
Kominek 2022

"The Unknown presents previously unseen portraits taken by photographer Rob Hornstra in 2003, while travelling through the Russian region of Chelyabinsk. He was working on his graduation project Communism & Cowgirls, for which he selected mostly personal images taken in people’s homes. The negatives of his chance encounters on the street remained untouched in his archive for years.
Two decades later Hornstra is wondering what has happened to the people he met? Hornstra: “The liberty that I, as a foreign photographer, had to capture random passersby has disappeared. The developments that have taken place since my first trip to Russia, from the assassination of critical journalists, human rights activists and politicians to the recent invasion of Ukraine, give those encounters in 2003 a certain poignancy. The former Iron Curtain is being redrawn. Russia has never felt so far away.”

Book Signing with Roger Ballen

Saturday 19 November 2022 18:00 – 21:00

Celebrating the reissue of his first publication ‘Boyhood’, please join us as we welcome acclaimed photographer Roger Ballen to Bildband Berlin.

"In photographs and stories, Ballen leads us across the continents of Europe, Asia, and North America in search of boyhood: boyhood as it is lived in the Himalayas of Nepal, the islands of Indonesia, the provinces of China, the streets of America. Each stunning black and white photograph depicts the magic of boys revealed in their games, their adventures, their dreams, their mischief.

Boyhood is able to connect boys all around the world across the borders of nationality and culture. More of an ode or a memory than a literal document, Ballen’s first book is as powerful and current today as it was 43 years ago presenting a stunning series of timeless images that transcend social and cultural particularities."

Book signing with Ave Pildas - “Star Struck"

Thursday 17 November 2022 18:00 – 21:00

Please join us as we welcome Ave Pildas for a book signing of “Starstruck”, his first book in over 40 years, published by Deadbeat Club out of Los Angeles.

“Pildas made these photographs in perhaps the most famous of the many famous spots in Los Angeles – but at a time (between 1972 and 1975) when Hollywood had more of a neighborhood feel and a raucous diversity was the norm. In Pildas’s generous and gentle view, everyone is an A-list celebrity. And he should know: those who have sat before his camera include Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, and the Velvet Underground. Pildas brings the same joyous discipline to regular folks on the street as he did to his well-known work for DownBeat magazine and Capitol Records.”

🔥New arrival🔥

Federico Clavarino
& Tami Izko - Eel Soup

"Picture an eel soup: a wriggling mass of creatures whose ends and beginnings can be swapped in the human eye, trapped in a limited space, their bodies entangled below the surface or floating on top of it, half submerged in a hot broth.

Like the visible bits of the viscous animals you have just imagined, the objects presented in this book are fragments of an ephemeral reality. By carefully observing spaces and body parts as they twist, press, open, close, bend and touch, photography and clay have become Federico Clavarino and Tami Izko’s means to reinterpret a series of meaningful connections. The resulting series ultimately tells a story of coexistence, one that is largely built around the lingering images left behind by otherwise vanishing intersections."

Eren Ileri “A Dying Monster”

Thursday 3 November 2022 at 18:00

"In A Dying Monster, Eren Ileri treats Formula 1 motor racing as a defining marker of extraction capitalism accelerating toward its own decline. In this mainly black-and-white photographic documentation representing a particular time frame of motor racing of the last decade, Eren paints a picture of Formula 1 that captures the racing spectacle’s contemporary character: drivers, as mere operators at the steering wheel, executing high-performance tasks with an extreme level of preciseness but with increasingly less variety of personal driving styles; and their technological counterparts as extensions of human bodies, aided by corporate organizations populated by engineers and alike, and driven by complex data analyses."

Love Songs – Photograhies de L’Intime

Atelier EXB 2022

This collective work, which accompanies the exhibition presented at the MEP, interrogates the role of photography in the comprehension and representation of love, physical proximity, sexuality and thus of intimacy.

The book offers a new look at the history of photography through the prism of love relationships. Built like the two sides of a record, Love Songs – Photographies de l’intime (Photography and intimacy) brings together the work of 16 artists who have placed their own intimacy at the center of their photographic creation.

Love Songs reveals the special relationship that photography has with reality and this indescribable thing called love.

Kovi Konowiecki – and in its place, another (signed)

"As the title of Kovi Konowiecki’s debut monograph – and in its place, another – reminds us, we are always and forever subject to the twin certitudes of transience and change. As is the artist, who has moved back and forth between California, Mexico, Europe, and the Middle East, all of which places are part of the fabric of this sprawling, unscripted book.

Here we are confronted with the geographical and emotional margins of society and the mind: the external and internal boundaries that inhibit both human movement and human potential. The photographs portray individuals and communities that exist in a liminal space between belonging and abandonment, many of which exert feelings of desolation."

🔥Upcoming Book Presentation🔥

Jens Liebchen - L.A. Crossing

Thursday 27 October 2022 18:00 – 21:00

"Out of the moving car, Liebchen looks at a city that embodies the opposites of utopia and dystopia. L.A. Crossing itself sounds like the title of a movie, accordingly the street becomes a stage and the photography becomes a kind of still image. Bathed in the beguiling Californian light, the city appears fictitious and real at the same time. "

🗻Book signing with Michael Lange🗻

Celebrating his exhibition at Robert Morat Gallery and book 'Cold Mountain' please join us as we welcome acclaimed photographer Michael Lange to Bildband Berlin.

Friday 21 October 2022 18:00 – 21:00

“For six years, Michael Lange made extensive journeys to various regions of the French Alps searching for solitude and silence. High up in the mountains he created a collection of impressive meditative images, between light and dark, quiet and storm.
He followed the idea that there is also and particularly in landscape photography, the decisive moment, the moment of perfect harmony between nature, landscape and the photographer. Often he had to wait for days, sometimes for weeks, high up in the mountains. Constantly accompanied by changes in weather and light, rain and snow showers, sudden beams of sunlight and mountains covered in mist – he was always in search of that moment.”
